A very 'Overland themed' 5 minutes takes place in Lara as A66 & S306 race 707 Operations' up Grainlander from Quambatook (including 4 ex-Overland cars in tow) through Lara on their way to Melbourne as 8194. Only a few minutes later, NR106 plays catch-up on 1AM8 up JBR Overland from Adelaide. The two trains met in a running overtake several minutes after this photo near Manor. 7/3/21

One of the girls on the Safaris Overland bus that left London in September 1968 for India, is seen here riding a camel. This may have been in Turkey, or maybe it was Iran, I can't remember exactly. It was a long time ago.

ORR 11L was given additional 'Overland and Continental' branding that didn't appear on any other vehicle and was very much in fashion at the time to identify coaches used on exotic overseas work. Only a handful of Vistadomes on various chassis were sold in the UK before it was replaced in 1974 by the 300 Line, and they didn't generally have long lives with their original owners, so this one's story seems quite realistic for a fictional model.

Hertfordshire, England: November 1971

The bus is photographed in the Hertfordshire village where I lived, just before I drove down to London to pick up the next load of passengers bound for India. The vehicle had been serviced and had minor work done on it in Istanbul on the previous return trip; it was cheaper to have work done there than in London. I had requested a set of new tyres but the company finances had been severely stretched at the time, so I had to make do with some part-worn tyres from a dealer in south London. Two spare tyres were carried on the roof rack in case of emergencies. The bus carried a comprehensive tool set and assorted spare parts. In the storage lockers under the floor were tents, camp beds, gas stoves, etc. – but this was to be a winter trip so all that stuff remained stowed away.

To situate it basically, Overlanding is a vehicle-based, on-road and off-road, adventure journey with a focus on self-reliance, flexibility, and enjoyment of the journey.
