Turkey: October 1971
Before I was pulled back on to the road one of the passengers carefully climbs out of the bus. The wire hawser had been attached to the front tow pin; minutes later the bus was back on the road and the passengers glad to get back in it as there was no warmth in the afternoon sun now. That night we stayed in Erzerum in cheap hotels. In that part of the world these places were not much more than a dollar a night; they were just basic accommodation, but it was sometimes advisable to use your own sleeping bag on top of the bed . . .
Behind the bus is the Aras River; the water level was higher than normal and fast-moving, presumably due to melting snow. This river flows eastwards and eventually empties into the Caspian Sea.

Great Overland Station in Topeka, Kansas began as a Union Pacific railroad passenger station on January 27, 1927. Along the way, it survived floods, was remodeled for railroad offices, abandoned in 1988, and damaged by fire in 1992. Railroad Heritage, Inc. leased the building from the Union Pacific Railroad to prevent the building's demolition.
Union Pacific Corporation donated the station to Topeka Railroad Days, Inc. 6 years later, and the Great Overland Station Project Team was established to direct efforts to preserve the station and transform it into a railroad heritage museum. In June 2004, The Great Overland Station opened its doors.
The Great Overland Station is quite beautiful, and this is a spectacular special event space, but as of the beginning of 2006, Great Overland Station is still building toward its potential. When I visited the museum in 2006, there wasn't enough to make the Station a destination for anyone but serious train buffs. Other then the structure itself, the biggest attraction is the 100 or so freight trains that pass the building daily. Perhaps more can be done with Topeka's connection to the Harvey House restaurant chain.

Pokhara, Nepal: October 1975
This photo was taken in Pokhara, where I spent my second and third nights in Nepal; the first night had been spent in a village not far off the main road up from the Indian border – I'd seen a place name on a roadside sign, the road looked wide enough for a bus, so I drove up to the village. There was enough space to park and before long people came to see why no-one, apart from myself, got off the bus – an empty bus is not exactly something you see everyday in many parts of the world – normally they are full of people. Later on I heard an unmistakable English voice; it belonged to a nurse who was working there. The next day I arrived in Pokhara and treated myself to a couple of nights in a decent hotel where the shower worked and there was excellent food. On the following day the bus owner arrived driving his smaller bus – this was another Van Hool vehicle but with only 20 seats. When we got to Kathmandu it wasn't long before a buyer was found, or he found us, who paid the owner what I thought was a fair price for the large bus – cash in US dollars. I spent about a week in Kathmandu, it was good to do not much for a change, after driving almost every day for the last six or seven weeks.

I think I am finally in a good spot with my own creation of an Overlanding Rig made entirely out of LEGO. I did this buy purchasing sets 60115 and 60117, combining them, and then going crazy with it. I love it!
Some small tweaks left to do (mainly the green mudflap area), but this it where I will leave it for a while.
cjb 590j was a fully restored and updated plaxton panorama elite bodied bristol and was typical of the coaches that ousted the bedfords under overland and county ownership
