From the archives April 2017 along the Grand River at the Grand Ravines North Park. Almost every year in the spring time the Grand River overflows and makes life difficult navigate through the park. The extra water can also create new photo opportunities.

I made this picture from the litte ferryboat that's crossing the river.

Pen y Garreg Dam, Elan Valley, Mid Wales, UK

Pen y Garreg Dam was completed in 1904. it retains water in the Pen y Garreg Reservoir which has a capacity of 6,055 megalitres. The dam is 37m high and 131m in length.

It stopped raining (at last) after lunch, allowing us a walk round two of the Longdendale Reservoirs. After all the recent rain, Torside is finally full to overflowing. Torside is the largest of the five reservoirs in the Longdendale chain and the last to completely fill. I don't think I've ever seen it full to overflowing before, it's often rather low. I believe it has, at times, been purposely kept that way while investigation work was being done to it's dam, which appears to have been fitted with lots of sensors.

The shots below show the overflow back in August (first shot) and October. It's interesting to see the same scene throughout the seasons.

Looking Close... on Friday: Sprinkles

Intense downpours the previous afternoon have raised the water levels in the creek. The falls are going off!

I was playing around with different lighting setups and came up with this.

NIJMEGEN / LENT - the threshold construction is a dam in the East side of the secondary channel with a number of openings (divers) that always fed by running water from the river Waal. At high tide the water will flow from the Waal over the threshold, whereby the entire capacity of the secondary channel is used.

Following on from last week's image, having escaped the weather on nearby Gorllwyn, the next stop was the Elan valley dams. This is a spectacular place to be when the dams are full and overflowing, even if you have to dodge the snowshowers. It was so grey and dark that there was hardly any colour to be had, so I went B&W with this.

The East Fork of Overflow Creek begins the first of the series of cascades comprising Glen Falls, Nantahala National Forest.

This is the outfall from Dovestones Reservoir, Chew Valley, Greenfield. The reservoir is also home to the local sailing club hence the safety fence to stop the sailors disappearing down the plug hole.
