OVERCOMING ADVERSITY. MAXIMIZING POTENTIAL.

On July 29, DAV hosted inaugural Day of Inspiration in Tampa, Florida, ahead of the 2021 DAV and Auxiliary National Convention. Veterans and active military members in the Tampa area and beyond were invited to participate in a free, one-day event to hear from nationally recognized speakers who delivered powerful stories throughout the day.

no importa si me siento

mas solo que de costumbre

no importa si a mi alrrededor

está lo esencial,

mientras en mi mano este

mi japa y en mi corazón

la instruccion de mi Guru

está todo bien,

aunque en mis ojos hayan

lagrimas, se que esta tristeza

es tan temporal como la vida.

no tengo muchas certezas

mas bien solo una,

y es que detesto sentirme lejos de tener un corazon mas puro, una mente mas ecuanime y la vision de que pese a que no soy cualificado tengo la fortuna de tener a mi maestro espiritual.

We've started a cleanse in preparation for a 5-day Ayurvedic healing session in Southern California, so we've been eating lots of cooked vegetables, drinking lots of hot water, and abstaining from everything fun.

Did I just actually write that?

This session at Portobello Market was about me overcoming my fear of engaging with total strangers in the street, then capturing intimate close-up portraits of them, using a prime 50mm lens. Being it's quite an invasive technique I found it very tough going, but eventually immensely rewarding. Hopefully the end results do convey what I was trying to achieve.

zero.four.seven. - little buddy.

i cut across the lawn on my way to class and i pass under a parking structure... dark, damp, kinda cold. that's where i found this little guy. with barely any light and having holes in it's leaves, it seemed to be doing just fine under there.

struggle defines growth.

Can you see the people ants crawling up this humongous stone?

Yosemite 2009

I spent my 25th birthday accomplishing the hardest hike in my life (so far?). This 17 mile hike to Half Dome tested my agility, endurance, my patience, and my courage. For the most part I passed. Physical wasn't a problem. However my courage was put to test at the final 400 feet ascent to the top of the Dome. My fear of height was my greatest obstacle... I was on the edge of giving up this final push to the top...Thanks to my friends who cheered for me, called me out, peer pressured me...I made it to the top and earned one of the best experience ever, not to mention my bragging rights.

There were many fallen trees, that blocked our paths, and we had to climb over, crawl under, and negotiate many of these obstacles to move ahead.

"Overcoming Systems of Oppression", 12'x25', Acrylic on Plywood

This is my beautiful little rescue kitten. When she was born, she was nearly lifeless with the umbilical cord wrapped around her right front leg. Lucky for me, the foster Mom was able to revive her and I got to meet and take her home 6 weeks later.

She came with the name "Florence" which just doesn't work for me as a cat name. I had her for a couple of weeks trying to decide on an appropriate name for her. I finally settled on "Nike" pronounced the Greek version of "Nee-kee" which means

"to overcome"

Been growing the moustache now for 6 weeks and it's now about 8mm long, and starting to cause me a few problems when eating.

So to overcome this I have worked out a completely fail-safe method of eating, which involves firstly pulling my top lip back and gnawing off the edges of my food like a gerbil.
