A DMPS student is awarded with a diploma during a summer graduation ceremony.
DMPS filled Hoyt Sherman Place to celebrate a summer graduation ceremony on August 14th. 81 graduates were awarded with diplomas after earning them through academic support labs. All five of the comprehensive high schools were represented at the summer graduation. North High School’s principal, Matt Smith, presented a commencement address about personally overcoming challenges after high school. Other district officials who participated in the ceremony included Interim Superintendent Tom Ahart, Executive Director of Secondary Schools and Learning Services Bryce Amos, Des Moines School Board President Teree Caldwell-Johnson, and school board members Cindy Elsbernd, Joe Jongewaard, and Bill Howard.

On a rainy Thursday, a day before the area was snowblocked (leaving me stranded with my mum and brother, first at Granny’s tiny pensioners apartment, and then at the gracious newlyweds’ delightful abode) Paula Vance became Mrs. Jackie Hunter.
My (massive) Northern Irish family has been talking about little else for weeks now and the subject is not expected to drop from conversation for weeks to come.

The second annual Community Outreach Day drew more than 100 participants from local organizations onto Fort Bliss Dec. 2. Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Child Crisis Center and the Police Explorers of El Paso attended the free event hosted by Soldiers from the Mobilization and Deployment Division and the 1st Armored Division Iron Training Detachment.
Volunteers from the ITD led children as young as 3 years old down the rappel tower and through the obstacle course.
“The opportunity to introduce children and adults from the greater El Paso community to some of the training conducted by Fort Bliss Soldiers is very important,” explained Capt. Clayton Melton, commander of ITD. First. Lt. Jerald Bodden, 644th Regional Support Group, and First Lt. Iesha Taylor, 7218th Medical Support Unit, from MaD, were also instrumental in organizing and hosting the day.
The event began with Col. Dominic Wibe, commander of the 644th RSG and Mobilization Division, welcoming the group. “If you do what they teach you to do, you will be able to overcome this,” he said. “You will be able to say you have done something great that a lot of people are too scared to do or can’t do.”
The Air Assault Cadre from ITD provided a block of instruction and explained safety measures prior to participants rappelling down the 50-foot tower. The group lined up for the cadre to begin rigging the Swiss seats, one-by-one, before moving to the tower.
Anthony Gomez, 9, of Big Brothers Big Sisters, explained the climb to the top of the tower was scary and “felt like climbing Mount Everest.” After rappelling, Gomez was proud of himself, saying, “I accomplished that I went down the tower.”
Bodden said it’s fun to mentor and inspire kids.
“I believe it’s important to impart a sense of pride and accomplishment, as well as the knowledge that they can accomplish any goal and overcome any hardship, hurdle or setback if they believe and work toward a goal,” Bodden said.
Orlando Hernandez, co-adviser for the Westside Police Explorers of El Paso, explained events like this build camaraderie within their program, teamwork and confidence.
“This experience has helped my determination,” said Yesenia Ochoa, 16, from Police Explorers of El Paso. “I know I can face anything big.”
Plans for another event this spring are moving forward. Bodden says he hopes the event will gain participation among the installation, local agencies and businesses.
“I believe the leadership (at Fort Bliss) has a lot to offer the younger generations,” Bodden said, “and the kids love to speak to them as well as rappel from the tower and negotiate the obstacles.”
Daniel Arriaga, a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters, plans to participate again.
“This is a great event for giving the kids a boost of confidence and morale,” Arriaga said. “Thank you to the military for hosting this. We appreciate your support and everything you do for us.”
The Mobilization and Deployment Division, or MaD, is not an actual military unit. It is an Army mission currently being led by the 644th Regional Support Group, an Army Reserve unit out of Fort Snelling, Minnesota. MaD is a section of DPTMS that conducts mobilization and deployment operations at Fort Bliss.

We Shall Overcome was created after the general election as a response to the austerity cuts which would be hitting those most vulnerable across Merseyside and the rest of the country.
Bands, artists and more will be donating their time and their work from October 1-5, in venues across Liverpool City Centre, in order to benefit food banks and other initiatives in Liverpool, including The Whitechapel Centre and The Brink.

大霸群峰位於雪山彙的北部，是雪山山脈主脊從布秀蘭山分岔伸出的大支脈，這條峻秀的山脊以大霸尖山為軸點，各向東、北、西三面分出長短不一 的四條之稜。東邊是巉巖危崖、五座連峰的東霸尖山稜線；正西是巑屼峭聳、孤峰稱奇的小霸尖山短稜；北邊分出兩稜，綿延北伸的馬洋山支脈，幅園散佈於塔克 金溪與薩克亞金溪之間，成為新竹線尖石鄉的主要山地，孕育著鎮西堡、新光、泰崗…等泰雅原住子民；西北伸出再轉折西延的是伊澤山支脈，也是大霸群 山的主稜脈，擁有迤邐5公里長的三千公尺高嶺，其間名峰計有：加利山(標高3,112公尺) 、耶巴奧山(標高3,192公尺) 、伊澤山(標高3,297公尺)與中霸尖山(標高3,392公尺)等。大霸群峰的登山路徑即連跨諸峰，才能到達大霸奇峰的岩基下，一親聖山芳澤。

雪山聖稜線連結雪山山脈雪山主峰與大霸尖山的稜脈，海拔高度均在3,100公尺以上，從雪山主峰到雪山北峰之間的稜脊，更在3,580公尺上，在這條壯麗 巍峨的巨嶺之上，岩峰嶙峋峭拔，巉巖突兀的高峰縱列，愛山人必須戰戰兢兢地克服險阻，橫越萬難，才能安全地完成縱走聖稜的心願，岳界有句話：走完聖稜， 終於可以結婚了！意思就是說：走過這一條困難重重的路線，年輕人才能有擔當，可以擔起家庭的重任。
聖稜之名，緣於西元1928年(昭和3年)，也就是大霸尖山首登(昭和2年)後的一年，當時的台灣山岳會總幹事沼井鐵太郎，在發表關於「關於攀登大霸 尖山之考察與實行」乙文中，描述了這一段稜線：「…為了縱走這條岩稜，需要相當於首登大霸尖山的準備。…這神聖的稜線啊，誰能真正地完成這大霸 尖山至雪山的縱走，戴上勝利的榮冠，述說首次完成縱走的真與美！…」。從此之後，這條神聖的稜線即深深地烙印在愛山人的心靈裡。 昭和六年(西元1931 年)，聖稜線這條大霸尖山、雪山之間險峻無雙的高連山脈，才真正首次被純粹登山家以繩索隊伍橫斷完成，開啟了聖稜線輝煌的山岳歷史。
這條昔日的探險級縱走路線，隨著時代的推演，縱走的隊伍漸漸地踏出一條明晰的途徑；民國六O年代之後的百岳登峰運動與七O、八O年代的社團雪山 六路會師登山運動，更吸引了眾多的隊伍，在這條神聖的稜線上活動，而傳統的聖稜線行程－大霸尖山到雪山主峰，已無法滿足愛好翻山越嶺的登山癡迷，於是有 人把行程延伸，加入了武陵四秀的行程，成了"聖稜ㄚ型"或是"聖稜O型"；"ㄚ"型就是從武陵農場起攀，先縱走桃山、喀拉業山、 池有山與品田山之後，續走塔克金溪經霸南，以輕裝往返大霸群山，再循傳統聖稜路線至雪山主峰；"O"型則是在縱走武陵四秀後，直接從品田山西側垂 降品田斷崖，再於布秀蘭山接上傳統聖稜的路線。多變的組合與選擇，讓聖稜線成為雪山山脈最著名的縱走路線。

Owing to the well-known Dabajian Mountain, Daba Peaks Trail becomes the most popular and famous mountain trail. That the beds in Jiujiu Hut （99 Hut） are always reserved in consecutive holidays proves how popular this trail is.
Lying in the north, Daba Peaks is a big branch of Xue Mountain Range, diverging from Buxiulan Mountain. This ridge radiates from Dabajian Mountain as the axis and forms 4 trails in 4 directions. On the east is Dongbajian Mountain Trail consisting of 5 peaks and overhanging cliffs; on the west is Xiaobajian Mountain Trail with precipitous crags and singular peak; on the north is Mayang Mountain Trail covering Takejin Creek and Sakeyajin Creek as the major mountain area in Jianshih Township of Hsinchu County that breeds Atayal people there; on the northwest is Yizhe Mountain Trail, the major one of Daba Peaks, which includes 5 over-3,000-meter mountains: Jiali Mountain (3,112), Yeba-ao Mountain (3,192), Yizhe Mountain (3,297), and Jhongbajian Mountain (3,392). Daba Peaks Trail needs climbers to stride across those mountains in order to reach the base of majestic Dabajian Mountain.
First climbed by people in 1927, Dabajian Mountain signifies a sacred mountain fascinating mountaineers all the time. Especially after Trailhead of Madara Creek was set up, more and more climbers and mountaineering teams flood in. Visiting this area takes 3 days on average.

Connecting Main Peak of Xue Mountain and Dabajian Mountain, Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) is over 3,100 meters, even over 3,580 meters between Main Peak and North Peak of Xue Mountain. There are many jagged, rugged rocks and steep, cliffy escarpments along the trail. Those who love mountain climbing have to overcome all difficulties with feat and trepidation, then able to finish this significant ridge. As an old saying in the mountain climbing realm goes, “those who finish Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) are qualified to get married.” It means only when a young man breaks through all difficulties along this trail can he shoulder the responsibility of having a family.
Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) was first described in an article written by a Japanese climber in 1928 and was named after the publication of the article. Moreover, it was first conquered in 1931 by a team of mountaineers with the help of ropes.
As time flies, more and more teams tried to climb Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail), resulting in a clear passage already. Many other mountain climbing activities held in the 60s, 70s, and 80s even attracted more crowds to step on this trail. Till now, the traditional route of Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail)—from Dabajian Mountain to Main Peak of Xue Mountain—cannot satisfy dedicated alpinists any more. Some of them, therefore, extend the route by including that of Wuling Quadruple Mountains, arranging “Shengling Y-shaped Trail” “Shengling O-shaped Trail.” Shengling Y-shaped Trail starts from Wuling Farm, across Tao Mountain, Kalahei Mountain, Chihyou Mountain, and Pintian Mountain, keep walking along Takejin Creek to pass Banan, go to Daba Peaks and back with a light pact, and follow the traditional route of Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) to mount Main Peak of Xue Mountain. Shengling O-shaped Trail also starts from Wuling Quadruple Mountains, descends from Pintian Cliff on the west side of Pintian Mountain, and gets to the traditional route of Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) by Buxiulan Mountain. These various choices make this trail the most popular route to approach Xue Mountain Range.

Looting foreign national (migrant) owned shops in South Africa September 2019
The images titled ‘overcoming xenophobia’ is an illustration of the reconstruction by migrants in South Africa after the looting of their shops. Making it difficult for them to reestablish themselves in a country that they hoped would give them a better life.
South Africa is a country with complexities that since the dawn of democracy has been plagued by a variety of issues such as unemployment, poverty and crime.
These social economic problems have created epidemics that haunt the character of society. The anger often overflows into other sectors of the community like in the case of foreign national in the country.
In September 2019 a surge of new violent attacks have culminated in the foreign owned shops being attacked. This took place across the capital city of South Africa Pretoria (Tshwane) and Johannesburg respectively. What was once a street of thriving businesses now are empty skeletons covered in ash?
Through the attack on foreign shops was initially motivated by xenophobic attacks, it quickly spread into large scale criminality in looting shops of mostly foreign national owned shops. The disregard of foreign national has crept into our national psyche from politicians, citizens and municipal worker who are mandated to assisting asylum seeker and refugees with asylum status.
Though the looting was also sporadic, affecting both South African owned shops it seems it was highly targeting foreign national owned businesses. Overcoming xenophobia is an image from project I have been working on to evaluate the damage of the attacks and how the migrants are finding new ways of reconstructing their livelihood.

Slugs are ugly and slimy. But they don't let life get them down. when met with an obstacle they take it on. Climbing their mountains, staying on course, slow and steady.
It is difficult to remember this tragedy without feelings of anger. The reflecting pool here must be more than a mirror, however, and allow the viewer to reflect also on their inner feelings. The greater the tragedy, the greater must be the will to forgive. We must also reflect that anger and hate have never made the world a better place. Today, as with all days, remember that all of humanity shares common bonds which overcome our differences....
