São Vicente de Fora Church and Monastery

We see : São Vicente de Fora Church

In the 12th century King Afonso Henriques made a vow to build churches on sites where Portuguese soldiers and northern European crusaders who fought the Moors lay buried. Today's São Vicente de Fora Church, built in 1582, stands on the site of one of those churches, which was located outside the city walls (hence the name "De Fora" meaning "on the outside").

It was inaugurated in 1629 but was severely damaged in the 1755 earthquake, when the main dome and roof collapsed. It was then restored, and in 1855 the old monastic refectory became the pantheon of the Bragança dynasty including Catherine of Bragança, a Portuguese princess who became the Queen of England when she married Charles II, and where lay the bodies of all kings from 1640 to 1910.

22/52 - Heaven

... For Golden halls. One day we will walk through fields of memories...

That is always how I envision Heaven… in addition to being able to leap and bound over mountains and waterfalls, I envision being able to look back on any moment in life as a photo or instant playback :P Gosh it will be such a beautiful place :)

As you can see I am loving being able to shoot outside again! Many thanks to my mom for allowing me to take out all our family portraits to a field and then hiking a couple miles in the process while carrying lots of stuff in the chilly part of evening… her expression at the end made my whole week: while huffing and puffing she goes “So NOW I understand what you mean when you say you’re ‘going to do a photoshoot’ that was… an experience” HAHA! Anyhow, semesters almost over, then I’ll be back to lots of shooting and posting!

There is a story in every photo I take. You may not always know it but it makes me remember the times when my kids needed me the most. Like the story of this one. My youngest was not happy at home and we didn't know what was wrong. So I took him outside. We chased the cat on the street, then we watched the rabbits in the fields and just when we where ready to go back home I took a quick glance over my shoulder and saw someone set a fire because there was smoke in the air. It made the sun light look a little unreal and magical. I put my boy in the place I thought would look good on the photo and showed him that he could pick poppies. He got busy and I could take a quick step back to take a few shots until he got bored with that.

Here you see why the Heron was guarding its domain with such ferocity. Within minutes of chasing away the anhinga, the heron lunged out of the tree it was sitting in, beat its extended wings thrice and plunged into the water - spearing the prize displayed here.

A few flips and turns and the prize slid down the throat - some other photos of this series are included in the comments below.

These birds stand still at the water's edge and wait to ambush prey, mainly at night or early morning. They primarily eat small fish, crustaceans, frogs, aquatic insects, small mammals and small birds. During the day they rest in trees or bushes. N. n. hoactli is more gregarious outside the breeding season than the nominate race.

today.........not really nice outside

I'm singing in the rain

Just singin' in the rain

What a glorious feeling

I'm happy again

I'm laughing at clouds

So dark up above

The sun's in my heart...........

The weather forecast said "Prepare for change, say goodbye to that blue sky, snow is coming" ... Again...

I took the chance and got up way too early and went to Sognsvann, a small lake just outside Oslo. Ludo, my Alaskan Husky and I had a few great hours wandering around in the most beautiful winter wonderland :)

The clouds were way to thick with little contrast, but the sun slipped out underneath :) I got this shot before the sun disappeared in the clouds :))

Yep, Whisky again! :-)

Oui, encore Whisky!

Yup, I broke out the ole Fog Machine and took some shots on Saturday morning. By sheer dumb luck...and driving around the countryside looking for something interesting to shoot....I found this old country road, shrouded in fog and lined with trees. Truly sublime.

This was taken right outside of Kiruna, Sweden during a snowmobile tour of Swedish Lapland. We were super fortunate to have been able to see these even though it was just for 10-15 min. Seeing the northern lights was high on my list of things I want to see before I die, so I'm incredibly thankful. The temperature was consistently around -20 Fahrenheit up here, and one of our tour guides said it got to around -40 Fahrenheit. It was painfully cold even with all the warm clothes they provide! The foreground on this image is lighter due to the moonlight from the 25 sec exposure

Just outside Emmen in Drenthe, the Netherlands is located on a hill in the woods Dolmen D45 (Dutch: Hunebed D45). This specimen belongs to the larger dolmens.

This Dolmen with a length of about 18 meters is already pretty close to Dutch largest in Borger, namely dolmen D27 with its 22.6 meters.

6 of 9 original stones are still present, but some are in the crypt. What is also special about this dolmen is that 13 kerbstones are still present.

Read more about the history of the dolmens or megaliths at my other pictures.

This is what we saw during our Cycling holiday in Drenthe and Groningen, the Netherlands, where we have cycled through the beautiful landscape.

The first builder of the temple were said to be the Amazons. Plinus the writer reports that the temple was ransacked seven times in its history. During the Archaic period the temple burned by a madman named Herostratos in year 356 AD.

Today the site of the temple, which lies just outside Selçuk, is marked by a single column constructed of dissociated fragments discovered on the site.

Last October we went to a business mixer in San Francisco. After the event I dragged my two friends to a mini-photo shoot at the Transamerica building, an iconic pyramid skyscraper that is supposedly earthquake-proof. This is the view from a side alley.

Most people on Great Keppel Island stay at the beach, were the boat lands. If you make the effort to walk around the island you get views like this.

The Kingfisher, a most prestigious bird to see and photograph, I have been lucky enough to see these birds on many occasion, not only locally but farther afield too, I have spent many hours just waiting for a glimpse and when you do see one that happens to land within your field of view your heart starts to pound as you just want to get the shot, good cover/camouflage and minimal movement is the key...oh and lots of time too! :)

Northern Mockingbird

From Birder from Maricopa:

Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos)

This well known bird is common and widespread in North America in the Lower 48. True to it's name, the Northern Mockingbird is an impressive mocker. It imitates the songs of endless other birds, as well as other animals and a variety of other sounds. This awesome songster commonly sings at night also. Birders could keep a "life list" of the birds and other sounds the Northern Mockingbird imitates. Northern Mockingbirds are found in a variety of habitats in their range, which are mainly open areas such as fields, lawns, suburban areas, deserts, etc. They have a diet of a variety of foods, most commonly being fruits and insects. Mockingbirds are also very defensive and aggressive of their nest, and relentlessly defend the nest against any intruders. Intruders include other birds, cats, and even people.

Northern Mockingbirds are permanent residents in Arizona and throughout most of their range. In Maricopa County, they are easily found in the city in parks, neighborhoods, and lawns. This species has adapted to live close to people. They are easily found in natural habitats too, such as open fields, deserts, and open foothills.

Bagan formerly Pagan is an ancient city from the 9th to 13th centuries,. The city was the capital of Myanmar. Bagan is one of Myanmar’s main attractions. It was the capital of Bagan empire, where Theravada Buddhism was the main religion. The area also known as the Bagan Archaeological Zone, occupies an impressive 26-sq-mile area. Marco Polo described Bagan as one of the finest sights in the world. Despite centuries of neglect, looting, erosion, regular earthquakes, not to mention questionable restoration, this temple-studded plain remains a remarkably impressive and unforgettable vision. Bagan’s kings commissioned more than 4000 Buddhist temples. Htilominlo Temple is a Buddhist temple located in Bagan built during the reign of King Htilominlo, Anno 1211-1231. The temple is three stories tall, with a height of 46 metres and built with red brick. It is also known for its elaborate plaster moldings. On the first floor of the temple, there are four Buddhas that face each direction. You can climb up to terraces and view both the inside and outside of this temple. It has examples of painted stucco walls, many of which are still in good shape.

Probably because it is one of the first Bagan temples I saw but I was impressed by its magnificence and the way it was build inside. Situated close to the road between Nyaung U and Bagan, and about 1.5 km northeast of Bagan. This large temple was built by King Nantaungmya in 1218. The temple is known to be the last Myanmar Style temple built in Bagan. The name is a misreading of the Pali word for 'Blessings of the Three Worlds'. Inside the 46-metre-high temple, which is similar in design to Sulamani Temple there are four Buddhas on the lower and upper floors.

We fietsen langs alle bijzondere boeddhistische tempels in Bagan.

Behind the inset you might have been able to see Yours Truly dipping into the chilly waters of Aurlandsfjord. He'd earlier climbed up to and along Brekkefossen, a magnificent waterfalls just outside of Flåm, where our MS Koningsdam made landfall in the morning. After a walk later northwest along the the fjord which is part of the larger Sognefjord, he'd worked up a sweat botanising and sought some cooling waters (to about 12 or 14 C). Throwing off his clothes, he swam out perhaps ten metres when the ice-cold thawwater of the snow on top of the hills forced him to seek retreat on stones under the nicely hot sun. The waters don't get much warmer, I'm told, because the fjord is one of the deepest of Norway, about 1000 m. The top layer of water is really quite nice and sweet, down deeper it must be horribly cold and it's said to be very salt.

PS Internet on the ship is exorbitantly and for me prohibitively expensive, so I'm posting this in a free-wifi internet cafe in Stavanger. Please excuse my lack of commenting this week...
