Dear friends

I am feeling more positive today and in less pain and wanted to share with you a picture taken in my garden and a poem I wrote conveying the hope I feel. Many thanks to everyone for your wonderful heart-warming good wishes, messages and prayers. I have been overwhelmed by your encouragement, support and friendship. I wish you all a beautiful week.

Love and hugs xo

AS I LAY ME DOWN by SOPHIE B. HAWKINS

I'LL LEARN TO BEND WITH PASSING WINDS

Standing in my garden

I can't do very much

I don't know all the names of things

so I call them such and such

the weeds are taking over

the lawns they look like meadows

but to me it is so beautiful

as I listen to Summer's echoes

I'm trying to find a gardener

to do the things I can't

but to me the garden's beating heart

drums out “give me a chance”

It never was a pristine lawn

living on the Marsh

this year I counted eight new orchids

naturalised in the grass

the fruit trees bear the sweetest fruit

this year in such abundance

the tall trees whisper “let us be,

let nature give you guidance”

I sit and listen; drink it in

this haven, now neglected

is showing me it's strength and will

against the odds; respected

we can learn a lot from nature

that bends with every wind

it withstands drought and floods

and snow that challenge every limb

I am in awe amid this Eden

and see that there's no need

for me to worry about it's future

or the scattering of seed

It knows instinctively what to do

It doesn't need direction

It offers me tranquility

the sun warms me with affection

It shows me I can be as strong

and withstand anything

I'll learn to bend with passing winds

accept life's offerings

the smallest dragonfly I've ever seen

just landed in my hedge

I take a shot; my arms are weak

they hurt when I outstretch

but I count myself so fortunate

to be surrounded by such beauty

yes, life is good and I'm alive

so I feel blessed, absolutely.

São Vicente de Fora Church and Monastery

-

We see : São Vicente de Fora Church

In the 12th century King Afonso Henriques made a vow to build churches on sites where Portuguese soldiers and northern European crusaders who fought the Moors lay buried. Today's São Vicente de Fora Church, built in 1582, stands on the site of one of those churches, which was located outside the city walls (hence the name "De Fora" meaning "on the outside").

It was inaugurated in 1629 but was severely damaged in the 1755 earthquake, when the main dome and roof collapsed. It was then restored, and in 1855 the old monastic refectory became the pantheon of the Bragança dynasty including Catherine of Bragança, a Portuguese princess who became the Queen of England when she married Charles II, and where lay the bodies of all kings from 1640 to 1910.

Have followed these Mute Swans and their Cygnet since they were tiny. While trying out some setting on my camera I was pleased when the Cygnet posed for me. Not sure if I got the colour quite right, but hope to learn more about my camera and improve.

"Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will." - George Bernard Shaw

A fantastically sunny and warm Saturday, and after breakfast, groceries and rushing through the housework, Fyero and I were able to spend the majority of it outside chatting with neighbours and reading... well Fyero was chasing bugs and napping and I was chatting and reading.

A wonderful Saturday, if you ask me.

I caught a glimpse of these mushrooms from my dining room window this morning and stalked them until the sun moved into the right position. I'm glad I did, because I feel this turned out pretty good.

Hope everyone has had a good Saturday.

Omg.. When I get to the scene.

Nearby construction vehicles entering and leaving.

Finally in result, when the many many sand flying up and rays completely dispersed.

Unable to grasp the light to stay in the main body.

I do actually have lots expect it and very time consuming.

I did my best again, but only 60%.

Taken on Tigertail Beach, Marco Island, Florida.

Here you see why the Heron was guarding its domain with such ferocity. Within minutes of chasing away the anhinga, the heron lunged out of the tree it was sitting in, beat its extended wings thrice and plunged into the water - spearing the prize displayed here.

A few flips and turns and the prize slid down the throat - some other photos of this series are included in the comments below.

I don't believe I have personally ever seen Black-capped Night Herons walk into the water to take a dip but that's what it appeared to be doing 'soaking' it's feathers before his bath.

today.........not really nice outside

I'm singing in the rain

Just singin' in the rain

What a glorious feeling

I'm happy again

I'm laughing at clouds

So dark up above

The sun's in my heart...........

Got up early, looked outside - a little fog and clouds were evident. I knew there would be a glorious sunrise...I didn't create it - draw it - paint it...I just tried to capture it!

I’m a world famous photographer. My work has been seen and talked about all over the world. And guess what, so has yours. And pretty much every other one of my contacts and friends on here. Promoting yourself as world famous nowadays is about as relevant as saying, “I make the best fish tacos of anyone in my house”. Flickr, photography and life itself is global. Now, YEARS ago, this meant something. World famous meant that your work was seen in publications in Italy, Russia, Brazil, Minnesota and all over. You really were someone. Now… eh. We’re all someone famous.

It has got to the point where people are so desperate for attention for their photos that I am daily being sent message titled So-and-so wants you to see a photo. Then inside this private invitation, there is no personal note, no reason why I should see a photo, no relevance of the photo to me… just a personal invitation to view their photo because………………. I’m not sure. A lot of the time, it’s from someone from a country who uses squiggly lines and dots for letters, and most of these people I’ve never heard from. Do they think that my comment/fave will help them achieve the dream of reaching magic donkey status.

For all of you who wanted the Lightroom presets I used for this engagement shoot, I’ll just give them to ya. If you click on this link it’ll take you to a free file hosting site where you can have the file or link emailed to you. Works pretty simple. Now you can tweak them any way you want. All I ask is if you do use my presets and post the photo on Flickr, to go outside your house at 1:04am the following night and do 10 jumping jacks in the middle of the street while drinking a cup of orange juice. Nothing is for free, baby.

There are 35 images in my Burrowing Owl album - this photo shows one of the first and only Burrowing Owls that I have ever been fortunate enough to see in the wild. To say that it was a thrill is an understatement! These endangered owls are tiny and so difficult to see, especially when they are down in the grasses. They are a true delight when or if they are seen on a fence post, so that the whole of the bird can be seen, not just a bright yellow eye peering out between the blades of grass. We saw two different individuals, possibly three, and for a brief moment both were perched on distant fence posts at the same time. Most of the time, though, they were mainly hidden in the grass, so my photos tend to be of "eyes". Such a great pity that this is an endangered species!

Without the help of two friends (Ron and Joyce) who helped us know where we might find these birds, and friends Cathy and Terry who invited me to go with them on a wonderful three-day trip to Waterton Lakes National Park, I would never have had this amazing sighting. For years, I had longed to see a wild Burrowing Owl, but never thought it would actually happen! Same for Cathy and Terry, so all three of us are SO grateful for the help we received! I'm still on a natural high and I know I will be for some time yet : )

During out three days away, we saw so many things, I hardly know where to start. This always happens when I go anywhere with Cathy and Terry - every day is a very long, fun-filled day, full of exciting finds.

Perhaps I will simply mention some of the things and then add more detail to each photo as I add them to my photostream. Of course, we couldn't have had a more beautiful area to explore! Waterton Lakes National Park has amazing scenery and wildlife. The weather forecast that I saw before we left Calgary said that we were in for three beautiful days of sunshine - too often, it can be rainy weather. So, luck was on our side, giving us warm, sunny days - until the BIG STORM hit, lol! We drove eastwards from the park, hoping to see Yellow-bellied Marmots and, if we were really lucky, a Burrowing Owl. Yesterday, I posted a photo of the storm that was approaching very fast, around 5:00 p.m. just before we started our return trip to Calgary. It was like nothing I had ever seen before - a menacing shelf (?) cloud that was travelling fast and furious. Despite trying our best to get away from it, it eventually engulfed our car, surrounding us with more or less zero visibility, pounding hail, thunder and lightning. There was nothing to do but stop the car and sit tight, hoping that the hail would not break the car windows and that this severe thunderstorm would not develop into a tornado! This storm was very scary, but at the same time, exciting (only because all turned out OK in the end!). Our road trip sure went out with a bang! Someone from the Alberta Tornado Watch told me that this particular storm was a Mesocyclone.

So, a few of the things we saw - fantastic scenery, 4 Black Bears (including one that was swimming in the lake), Bison, Deer, Golden-mantled Ground Squirrels, Chipmunks, various bird species including the Burrowing Owls, a few wildflowers, several Yellow-bellied Marmots (a first for me!), a few different insect species, and a family of Dusky Grouse (uncommon in Waterton Lakes National Park). I even got the chance to see three or four new-to-me old, wooden grain elevators.

Cathy and Terry, thanks so much for yet another wonderful trip with you! Can't thank you enough for inviting me along. You always do such a great job of finding so many interesting things for us to see and enjoy. Lots of fun!

"As a result of the Burrowing Owl's ENDANGERED Species status in 1995, it has the focus of a variety of conservation efforts. Operation Burrowing Owl and other projects involving habitat preservation with landowners have been created. Populations are monitored by Fish and Wildlife departments. They have been reintroduced into the British Columbia interior, where it was extirpated. Outlook would improve if larger areas of habitat were preserved and harmful pesticides were banned in all areas of their range. Numbers could increase if an increased tolerance to burrowing mammals develops (i.e. badgers) – provides homes for the Burrowing Owl. Outlook: perilous." From burrowingowl.com.

A little flock of these guys allowed me to get close at Lighthouse Park as they foraged and bathed on the shore. I love the cute sounds they make.

Had a great birthday and whole WEEKEND of wonderful wishes and surprises! As Ken & I sat outside enjoying the last of my birthday, a grand flotilla of pelicans came by to wish me well for another year! It was like magic! This was a large group and we could see there was another group upriver that looked as large as this one. They were "herding" fish into a circle and feeding! Pretty much a WOW event! I think it must be lucky to see them on your birthday!

This was taken right outside of Kiruna, Sweden during a snowmobile tour of Swedish Lapland. We were super fortunate to have been able to see these even though it was just for 10-15 min. Seeing the northern lights was high on my list of things I want to see before I die, so I'm incredibly thankful. The temperature was consistently around -20 Fahrenheit up here, and one of our tour guides said it got to around -40 Fahrenheit. It was painfully cold even with all the warm clothes they provide! The foreground on this image is lighter due to the moonlight from the 25 sec exposure

Just outside Emmen in Drenthe, the Netherlands is located on a hill in the woods Dolmen D45 (Dutch: Hunebed D45). This specimen belongs to the larger dolmens.

This Dolmen with a length of about 18 meters is already pretty close to Dutch largest in Borger, namely dolmen D27 with its 22.6 meters.

6 of 9 original stones are still present, but some are in the crypt. What is also special about this dolmen is that 13 kerbstones are still present.

Read more about the history of the dolmens or megaliths at my other pictures.
