Hidden from View. Flåm, Aurlandsfjord, Norway
Behind the inset you might have been able to see Yours Truly dipping into the chilly waters of Aurlandsfjord. He'd earlier climbed up to and along Brekkefossen, a magnificent waterfalls just outside of Flåm, where our MS Koningsdam made landfall in the morning. After a walk later northwest along the the fjord which is part of the larger Sognefjord, he'd worked up a sweat botanising and sought some cooling waters (to about 12 or 14 C). Throwing off his clothes, he swam out perhaps ten metres when the ice-cold thawwater of the snow on top of the hills forced him to seek retreat on stones under the nicely hot sun. The waters don't get much warmer, I'm told, because the fjord is one of the deepest of Norway, about 1000 m. The top layer of water is really quite nice and sweet, down deeper it must be horribly cold and it's said to be very salt.
PS Internet on the ship is exorbitantly and for me prohibitively expensive, so I'm posting this in a free-wifi internet cafe in Stavanger. Please excuse my lack of commenting this week...
