I took the dogs outside at 2AM this morning and the fog made a nice setting for a neighbor's house.

Both times I headed to the beach side of Point Mugu, I was treated with cloudy skies, varying winds and different sunsets. When I use the 10 stop filter during the day at the ocean, I seem to slightly underexpose the shot, regardless of exposure time. This isn't always intentional but helps me keep details in the sky I might otherwise lose.

I still play around with the 10 stop using both a circular polarizer on the end or without and while it's tougher to color correct when I use both (actually, I have trouble with color correction on a lot of the longer exposure water shots), I think the results are often interesting.

On this trip, the waves were smaller and the tide a bit lower so I shot much closer to the sea than I originally intended. When I returned the second time, this rock was getting battered by waves and I most likely would've been washed off it along with my gear had a lifeguard not told me to stay a bit farther back than I was when she first found me.

There is still one area I haven't climbed down to yet and perhaps next time I'll finally make my way there. The cove that's visible in a few previous posts is the area and as long as the tide level is manageable, I intend to do it.

Not much more needs to be said of a view like this other than Yosemite is freaking amazing! And that thought...feeling happened quite often riding a rental bike in Yosemite Valley that early afternoon in May! Here I stopped not far from Swinging Bridge and looked to the southwest. On another image, I'd pulled back to capture a more wider angle view. Here I zoomed in to the peaks while adding a little bit of the nearby meadow and trees and clouds above to somewhat frame the mountain peaks beyond.

After many days of skies filled with smoke from the California wildfires I unzipped my tent door at 5 am and stepped out into perfectly clean air. As the rising sun hit the upper reaches of the peak it became apparent that this would be one of those trademark laser clear alpenglow displays that the Range of Light is so well known for. Completely worth the wait...

The perfect place to sit and enjoy the evening on Thirlmere, so calm and still.

Newfound Gap Road Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Sevier county, Tennessee Mountains

Accessed via US-441 (Newfound Gap Road) in Gatlinburg

Date taken: April 26, 2016

While I rush around from destination to destination, planning and hoping for favorable light and atmospheric conditions at various destinations across the southeast and mid-atlantic, the roads and trails themselves pass largely unnoticed and underappreciated in my photography. When I sit at home during the off moments building excitement for my next adventure, however, it's more often than not these very trails and roads that are top of mind for me (not the destinations). So, this one is for the journey!

Newfound Gap Road is a thirty plus mile highway straight through Great Smoky Mountains National Park, connecting Gatlinburg, Tennessee with Cherokee, North Carolina. Gaining some three-thousand plus feet in elevation from either approach up to Newfound Gap (intersection of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail), the road transports visitors into and through obvious environmental changes--both visual and temperate. The original over-mountain highway passed through Indian Gap (assumed lowest point) until Andrew Guyot mapped the elevation of the many peaks in the Smokies, determining a "newly found" gap that was actually the lowest over-mountain pass, hence Newfound Gap. As America's most popular National Park, it stands that many folks have likely journeyed up and down this very highway as well.

J'ai été peu présente ces deux dernières semaines, le décès de ma chatte Poussy m'a fait beaucoup de peine et je n'ai pas le coeur à grand chose depuis ..... Désolée

One of the delights of these summer days is viewing the interactions between mother deer and their babies. I've had the good fortune to see at least three does with their new fawns this past week. And while the title of this image may be an example of anthropomorphism, I prefer to think I've captured an affectionate moment.

Standard Monday, hard to get motivated, but once the ball started rolling it just kept going until it was time to leave the office for the day.

Work is frequently chaotic and busy, and there's never enough time to get everything crossed off the to-do list, but that keeps things moving at a nice pace and I don't find it high stress because deadlines aren't often pressing.

Took a quick walk over one of my breaks today to see what was spring like and found a few things, but I like the way this turned out best so it was a simple winner for today.

Hope everyone has had a good day.

This eagle was thinking about landing on that stick but just as he was going to land he changed his mind and took off the other way. He must have decided it was a little small for him.

Lucked out getting this shot about 6 miles south of Hannibal Missouri. I was taking to my brother Ralph, about photography and some of the wonderful friends we've been making, when I noticed a break in the clouds and some pretty nice light beams breaking through. I told him I was going to pull over to the narrow shoulder, but had to wait until I was on top of one of the rolling hills to get a better view. By the time I had found a spot, I looked at the area I wanted to photograph, but now had power lines running straight across the area I wanted to photograph. Told him I had missed the shot, those lines were not working for me. A few minutes later we ended our call. Then a short time later the power lines had crossed over to the other side of the road and I had a clear view, plus the sun was further down, so I was able to get a nice warm golden sunset. Bonus points! I really did luck out with this shot.
