I've never seen this outdated line map before and spent my whole ride trying to get a picture of it, kind of a challenge with the low light, moving train, and a rush hour crowd getting in my way. This one isn't super clear but that's the best I could do.

They hand-wrote in the newer stations (see also the next picture with the Cambridge stations) but Downtown Crossing and JFK/UMass are still left as Washington and Columbia.

Since the acquisition of Canada Safeway by Sobeys in 2013, the existing Safeway stores have gone in a new direction. With a new store opening to replace an existing one at the Lawson Heights Mall, this will remain the most outdated location.

There has been talk about updating this location for years, but that has yet to occur.

Update Sept 13 2011, Added a few filler panels and rearranged every thing to prepare for future expansion. Also did better cable management and routed entire house's network through the rack to have a centralized switch instead of satellite switches.

We’re not returning to ‘outdated’ predict and provide, says Robert Goodwill MP, Parliamentary under secretary of state for transport, the minister for roads and for cycling, too. He says this in a letter to Transport Xtra Magazine.

+++

I write following your coverage of the draft National Networks National Policy Statement (“Rethink ‘predict and provide’ roads policy, profession tells DfT” LTT 07 Mar).

The Government is not bringing in a programme of large-scale new road building, or working to an outdated “predict and provide” model. The draft National Policy Statement (NPS) very clearly rules this out. Our investment is foremost about improving the existing network, bringing forward schemes to improve the strategic road network where there is a strong justification based on economic benefits and quality of life, taking full account of environmental and social impacts. Almost 40% of the funding over this Parliament and next is for maintenance. Our investment in road improvements sits alongside huge investment that will transform our rail network, support sustainable transport choices and protect the environment, including supporting the uptake of ultra-low emission and electric vehicles.

++++

The letter Goodwill is referring to was packed with experts telling the Government they’re heading for disaster, if they build more roads. The experts included

transport planners, local authorities, and public transport and environmental lobby groups.

The draft NPS, on which consultation closed last week, predicts that road traffic will rise 42% in England between 2010 and 2040. This is the NPS that believes cycle use will drop, so won’t plan for cycling.

The Transport Planning Society says the road sections of the document are “one of the weakest policy statements of recent years”.

“Parts of the document dismiss key policy elements as simply irrelevant, including demand management and the use of sustainable modes. Land use planning, either to minimise the need to travel, or locate travel generators close to sustainable networks is completely missing.”

The Local Government Technical Advisers Group (TAG) calls for the statement to be totally rewritten. “So much is wrong with the starting point for this statement that it would be very damaging for the country and its people without a fresh start. The use of national traffic forecasts to continue (or revive) a policy of predict and provide is seriously flawed. The potential demand for increased travel is possibly true but a predict and provide model, even for trunk roads, is highly undesirable. It is deeply concerning that phrasing of the document belittles the benefits of investment in non-car based modes of transport,” says TAG.

The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation said: “CIHT does not think the document clearly establishes the need for development of the national networks, particularly on the road network. The potential for modal shift from road to rail for passengers is written off in simplistic terms, taking no account of regional and local variations. It does not address demand management in any detail.”

Dorset County Council says: “The outcome [of the NPS] is likely to be increased pressure on local roads, whilst local highway authorities are effectively starved of the funds that will be needed to resolve the resultant urban congestion. We do not think it sensible to devise an NPS that does not include strategies for the 98% of the road network outside Highways Agency control.”

On the other hand, motoring groups have welcomed the NPS. The RAC Foundation says it can find “little to disagree with” in the draft NPS.

Renovation (also called remodeling) is the process of improving a broken, damaged, or outdated structure. Renovations are typically either commercial or residential. Additionally, renovation can refer to making something new, or bringing something back to life and can apply in social contexts. For example, an old looking interior or exterior wall can be renovated with the help of a little repair and then by applying faux brick wall panels or other suitable types of veneers.

The renovation process can usually be broken down into several processes:

•Planning

•Engineering

•Structural repair

•Rebuilding

•Finishes

Reasons

Many people renovate homes to create a new appearance for their home, or so another person can live in the residence. Builders often renovate homes because it is a stable source of income.

Wood and renovations

Wood is versatile and flexible, making it the easiest construction material for renovations, and wood buildings can be redesigned to suit changing needs. Few homeowners or professional remodellers possess the skill and equipment that is required to alter steel-frame or concrete structures.

Forest certification verifies that wood products have been sourced from well-managed forests. Most certification programs provide online search options so that consumers can find certified products—the Certification Canada program includes a search option for all of the certification programs that are in use in Canada.

In North America, most structures are demolished because of external forces such as zoning changes and rising land values. Additionally, buildings that cannot be modified to serve the functional needs of the occupants are subject to demolition. Very few buildings on the continent are demolished due to structural degradation.

The Athena Institute surveyed 227 commercial and residential buildings that were demolished in St. Paul, Minnesota, between 2000 and mid-2003. Thirty percent of the buildings were less than 50 years old, and 6% were less than 25 years old. The four top reasons for demolition were “area redevelopment” (35%), “building’s physical condition” (31%), “not suitable for anticipated use” (22%), and “fire damage” (7%). Lack of maintenance was cited as the specific problem for 54 of the 70 buildings where physical condition was given as the reason for demolition.

Process

Most builders focus on building new homes, so renovating is typically a part-time activity for such tradespeople. The processes and services required for renovations are quite specific and, once plans are signed off, building a new home is relatively predictable. Renovations usually require all of the sub-trades that are needed for the construction of a new building. During renovation projects, flexibility is often required from renovation companies to respond to unexpected issues that arise. Projects involving renovation require not just flexibility, but a plan that had been agreed upon by multiple parties. The planning process will involve feedback from financial investors of the project, and from the designer. Part of planning will also entail the collection of data for the completion of the project and then the project plan will be revised and given consent before continuing with renovations.

Effects

Renovation has several impacts, including:

•creating jobs

•increasing spending

•promoting gentrification

•generating Tax revenue during both the construction and residential phases

Requirements

Requirements for renovation include property or site to reconstruct; structural plans; knowledge of sewage disposal, water supply, and flood zones; project plan; funding; and builders.

This is a picture of a medieval castle in Ireland. The rundown and outdated structure relates to a section of the Northern Ireland sectarian warfare that is important for this theme. I chose it based on the fact that it connects to the ideas portrayed in the book Hope against History, particularly starting on page 83. The cities of Belfast and Derry are the only two where one could conceivably be searched more going into a shop then on the way out. The pubs in the downtown areas are surrounded by cement filled barrels interlinked with steel rebar to keep car bombers at a safe distance. From what madness could security like this be born? With the ideas of a freedom fighter came special privileges in courts until the “Maze”, one of if not the most sophisticated prison in the world, where in criminals were treated like all others to stomp out there hopes and dreams and crush the ideas of political freedom. Even so new gangs appeared in the 1970’s on, but the Provisional IRA is still the number one target. Although the new laws are in place “Nevertheless, militant strikes, riots, highjackings, political kidnappings, terror bombings, assassinations, and armed clashes between security forces and dissident groups are common events in many parts of the world. Entire societies may be exposed to conflict for extended periods… More often social violence is sporadic and less pervasive, being associated with sectionally, ethnically, or ideologically distinct minorities…” The gang warfare apparent in Belfast and other local cities within Northern Ireland can be attributed to the mere religion one belongs to, although some gang leaders go against there religion entirely. “The conflict is best understood as two wars: one between three sets of armed or militant agents, and a second between the three sets of militant agents and civilians.” The militant agents are the Loyalists, Nationalists and the security forces. They are fighting the battles and losing the men based on for Nationalists- (Catholic) overthrowing the British rule in Ireland; the Loyalists- (Protestant) want Ireland to stay a member of the U.K.; and finally the security forces who are caught in the middle of both factions in this ‘patriotic’ war.

Minolta Dynax 9 and outdated (1999) Kodak Elite Chrome 200 film, exposed +1 EV

So, I've been shooting 4x5 slide film with an outdated box of Ektachrome 100 Plus (EPP). It expired 10/2006, and reliably gives me a magenta cast. The top pic is the scan untouched, the bottom is after I color corrected it. I'm not sure if the color cast is due to the film being expired, but I'm not really fond of it. I have some 120 EPP that I've shot through the Yashica that comes out the same way. The film was crazy cheap, but if I have the option in the future, I'll buy something different (ideally, either E100S or E100G, which looks awesome cross processed).

[I compared the 4x5 EPP with the 120, which was 3 years older, and while the 120 still has a little bit of a magenta cast, it's not nearly as bad, so I think the color comes from the longer exposure times with the pinhole]

PZL P.11c:

The only preserved of it's kind. Legend of the September 1939 campaign and workhorse of polish fighter squadrons. This very machine actually took part in Sempetmber Campaign, piloted by Lt. Waclaw Krol, who shot down Henschel 126 and Heinkel 111 (1st and 5th september)

Description taken from wikipedia:

The PZL P.11 was a Polish fighter aircraft, designed in early 1930s by PZL in Warsaw. It was briefly considered to be the most advanced fighter design in the world. The PZL P.11 served as Poland's primary fighter defence in the Polish campaign but by that point was outdated due to rapid advances in aircraft design.

By 1 September 1939, the fighter squadrons had been deployed to remote airfields, so they were not bombed by the Germans. During the Polish campaign, the P.11 fought against more modern German bombers and fighters. Not only were the German Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Bf 110 faster and better armed, but also most German bombers were faster

Despite the German superiority, the P.11 managed to shoot down a considerable number of German aircraft, including fighters, but suffered heavy losses as well. The exact numbers are not fully verified. A total of 285 German aircraft were lost according to Luftwaffe records, with at least 110 victories credited to the P.11 for the loss of about 100 of their own

Some Interesting facts:

* At dawn on 1 September, Cpt. Mieczysław Medwecki flying a PZL P.11c was shot down by a German Ju 87, having the dubious honour of becoming the first aircraft shot down in the Second World War.

*The first Allied air victory was achieved 20 minutes later by Medwecki's wingman, Wladyslaw Gnys who shot down two Dornier Do 17s with his P.11c.

*The PZL P.11c was also the first aircraft to successfully ram an enemy aircraft in the Second World War.

*The first large air battle of the Second World War took place in the early morning of 1 September over the village of Nieporęt just north of Warsaw, when a German bomber group of about 70 Heinkel He 111 and Dornier Do 17 was intercepted by some 20 P.11 and 10 P.7 fighters and had to abandon their mission to Warsaw

Today I was playing with some seriously (+7years) outdated 4x5 film.

Some photos came out completely dry and white, others were partially developed or very dull.

This one came out surprisngly well.

Gatesheads Trinity Square car park (known by many as the Get Carter Car Park or Gateshead Multi Storey Car Park) was built from designs by Owen Luder (subsequently RIBA President) and opened in 1967, five years on from the drawing board. The building towers above Gateshead town centre (being the tallest building in the town centre by quite a margin). The car park is an example of the Brutalist style of architecture (raw exposed concrete defining the character of the building and its exterior). The top floor of the building featured a space for a cafe-bar with views of Gateshead and Newcastle however, it was never used. By the time the car park was constructed, its design was already out of date and unfashionable. Its outdoor shopping precinct quickly became outdated with shoppers preferring indoor precincts. Rather than becoming the centre of its community public opinion has called for its demolition (the building was listed in Britains top 10 worst buildings) and the car park is instead famous for the role it plays in the 1971 gangster movie "Get Carter". Following decades of deterioration the decision was made to demolish the car park structure, the indoor market that lies below and associated properties on High Street, Ellison Street and the adjacent Trinity Square, allowing for a new city centre development.

In 2008, following an extensive pre-tender interview process and a successful tender submission Thompsons were appointed to conduct enablement works with the removal of asbestos and the soft strip of fittings and fixtures from properties along Ellison Street. Prior to Christmas of 2008 Thompsons were given the green light to commence the full demolition package. Works have commenced on the low level shops along Ellison Street and will progress into Trinity Square and along High Street. Demolitions will then progress to the multi-storey car park structure itself. Thompsons newly acquired Komatsu 750 super high reach 360o excavator machine will assist our Caterpillar 350 high reach machine to demolish the car park, working top to bottom in a pre-determined sequence.

The outdated film look has become unbearable, yet I'm too cheap to throw my stash of suspicious film away.

My LinkedIn profile pic is extremely outdated (circa 2009). I figured it's a good time to update it since I finally got my hair cut after months and months of growing it out and looking like a hobo every day at work. Easy to do when your day starts at 3am. Seriously... it was bad, and I reached my prime in laziness. I was growing it out with no goal in mind except to avoid having to find a new stylist and also to be able to continue doing my hair in under three minutes every day (pulled back in a messy bun, straight out of the shower).

For those buying outdated disc film. 3m is generally not completely useless while the Konica has mostly faded to almost nothing. Here's how you tell the difference between a Konica and a 3M when purchasing film branded with a different companies name....like a box or drugstore. Almost all off brand disc films where either Konica or 3M. The far superior 3M has three little black squares while the Konica has only two and every one knows that 3 is better then 2!

ps K-mart disc film remains a mystery...any help is appreciated.

This Fred Knight photo ran in the Lynchburg newspaper on March 17, 1965 with the news that Lynchburg City Council had requested federal funds to widen Wards Rd. from two to four lanes from Fort Avenue to a point where the road was already four lanes beyond the intersection seen here, in front of the K-Mart. The proposal included the widening of the bridge seen here over the Norfolk & Western Railway.

Some of the former businesses seen here are Lendy's Big Boy / Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Texaco service station (both left), and a Gulf service station and the Cities Service station beyond it (right).

Thank you so very much for your interest in Clean Bread and Cheese Creek. Unfortunately the heavy rains of the spring and the areas outdated stormwater management controls of our community has clogged this historic stream with trash. We can certainly use all as many volunteers as possible of all ages and abilities and we look forward to the possibility of working with you! We are all aware of the importance the health of the Chesapeake Bay hold to all Maryland Residents. Those who grew up in this area remember a different creek entirely, one teeming with frogs, crayfish, and minnows – a place where many a child spent long summer days happily playing. It is our goal to bring back that stream, not for me, not just for the residents that live along it, but for everyone who reaps the benefits of the Chesapeake Bay. We are a group of volunteers working with the community, National Public Lands Day, the Ocean Conservancy, American Rivers, Trash Free Maryland, as well as other organizations to clean up Bread and Cheese Creek.

Please mark your calendars for our next cleanup on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Rain or Shine, as the day and time we clean up the section of Bread and Cheese Creek from the Berkshire Area to North Point Road. Registration will be at 2408 Plainfield Road, Dundalk, MD 21222. This event will be run in conjunction with the International Ocean Conservancy as part of their International Coastal Cleanup Event.

We run our cleanups as a family event with plenty of ways for volunteers to participate. We welcome every type of person of every ability level to contribute and assist with the cleanup. Though it is true we will need people to dig out shopping carts and haul trash to the dumpsters, we need people to run water, food, tools, and trash bags (both empty and full) to individuals in the creek. People to sort recyclables from the debris removed. People will be needed to help at registration, setup food and snacks as well as many other less strenuous activities. We are also authorized to sign-off on Community Service and Service Learning Hours for students. The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone. We will provide lunch and snacks as well as gloves. A limited number of tools are available for sign-out, but suggest bringing your own if you have them

Our cleanups are part of an ongoing effort clean the entire stream by 2014 in preparation for the War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration. (Bread and Cheese Creek will be receiving two historic plaques on the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail) The creek played a rather significant part in the Battle of North Point which took place on September 12, 1814. Both the American and British Troops camped along its banks, the American troops using is as a rallying point. It is rumored that the young heroes Daniel Wells (19) and Henry McComas (18) used the stream channel to sneak up on British General Robert Ross killing him with their muskets before being killed in return fire. This important part of our history should not be left the eyesore it currently is.

I got this globe in first grade, like on earth day or something. I'm kind of surprised how outdated it is, for even then, it would have been 1996 or 1997, I don't see a date when it was made though.

All the major land marks noted on the tiny map are odd as well, but these two stood out.

Second, I do not have any special holder. This examples are scanned in medium format film holder, being fixed only from one side.
