An attractive riverside village of half-timbered cottages, famous for its maypole. The church of St Peter has Saxon origins, though the present building is Norman with surviving south and north doors and sturdy arcades. The tall west tower is Norman to the string-course, Early English, then Perpendicular at the top. The Decorated chancel was thoroughly restored by Sir G.G. Scott in 1866-7 when the wooden porches were replaced with a stone south porch. Plain Jacobean pulpit and font which the church guide describes as Saxon, on later supports. A carved chancel screen was installed in the 1920's by Joseph Northcott of Beaworthy, Devon and the east window by Geoffrey Webb 1924, a modern version of a Jesse Tree. Also an attractive chancel window by Mayer & Co. of Munich. The chancel was then refurbished and an organ provided by Henry Hewins of Stratford-upon-Avon. A stone slab once held a brass to Walter Williams Rector, d. 1484 and a parish chest c. 1250. The Lich-Gate is modelled on a C14 original.
