Grugapark Essen is a sprawling urban park in the heart of the Ruhr area, renowned as one of Germany's largest and most attractive leisure parks. Its origins date back to the first "Große Ruhrländische Gartenbau-Ausstellung" (Great Ruhrland Garden Exhibition) in 1929, from which its name "Gruga" is derived. Despite being largely destroyed during World War II, the park was rebuilt and expanded for subsequent horticultural shows, including the Bundesgartenschau in 1965, shaping its current diverse landscape. Today, covering approximately 60 hectares, Grugapark serves as a vital green lung for the city, offering a multifaceted retreat for recreation, culture, and nature appreciation.
The park boasts a rich botanical diversity, featuring extensive gardens such as themed areas, an impressive botanical garden with plant houses showcasing tropical and desert flora, and seasonal displays that provide vibrant colors throughout the year. It offers numerous playgrounds, sports facilities like beach volleyball courts and a skate park, and a miniature railway, the Grugabahn, which provides a delightful tour of the grounds. The park also integrates art and culture, with sculptures scattered throughout and venues for concerts and events. Features such as the graduation tower offering a beneficial microclimate and the distinctive Hundertwasser House further add to the park's unique character, making Grugapark a cherished destination for both local residents and tourists.
The origins of the Rushcart are similar to the traditions of rushbearing which survives in Cumbia, but which have evolved in a different way. Rushes were gathered for strewing on the church floor and in Saddleworth, the local Morris society revived the local tradition of gathering the rushes in a two-wheeled decorated cart and bringing them back to St Chad’s Church at Uppermill.
