Hortillonnages, hortillons hortellus hortus : origine du nom
Hortillon est un mot picard apparu du 15e siècle, issu du latin Hortellus qui signifie petit jardin (hortus : jardin). Ce n'est que plus tard qu'on parla d'Hortillonnage et d'Hortillonnages, pour désigner les marais de Picardie irrigués par des canaux, et cultivés par les paysans.
La terre des maraîchers
La culture maraîchères est l'activité principale des hortillonages depuis des siècles. Les hortillons, c'est plus de 300 hectares de jardins et de terres alluviales, répartis sur 4 communes : Amiens, Camon, Longueau et Rivery. La qualité de la terre, conférée par un sous-sol argileux recouvert de limons et de tourbe déposés par la Somme en font un haut lieu de la culture maraîchère en Picardie. En 1900, c'est près de 1000 personnes qui avaient une activité d'hortillon…
Aujourd'hui, il ne reste qu'une dizaine d'exploitations de maraîcher en activité. Les récoltes (principalement des légumes frais) sont toujours vendues au marché de la ville d'Amiens.
