A visit to Caernarfon Castle in North Wales. It was here in 1911 and 1969 that the Prince of Wales was inaugurated (Prince Edward later Edward VIII and the current Prince of Wales, Prince Charles).

  

Caernarfon Castle (Welsh: Castell Caernarfon), often anglicized as Carnarvon Castle, is a medieval fortress in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, north-west Wales cared for by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service. There was a motte-and-bailey castle in the town of Caernarfon from the late 11th century until 1283 when King Edward I of England began replacing it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative centre of north Wales and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale. There was a deliberate link with Caernarfon's Roman past and the Roman fort of Segontium is nearby.

 

While the castle was under construction, town walls were built around Caernarfon. The work cost between £20,000 and £25,000 from the start until the end of work in 1330. Despite Caernarfon Castle's external appearance of being mostly complete, the interior buildings no longer survive and many of the building plans were never finished. The town and castle were sacked in 1294 when Madog ap Llywelyn led a rebellion against the English. Caernarfon was recaptured the following year. During the Glyndŵr Rising of 1400–1415, the castle was besieged. When the Tudor dynasty ascended to the English throne in 1485, tensions between the Welsh and English began to diminish and castles were considered less important. As a result, Caernarfon Castle was allowed to fall into a state of disrepair. Despite its dilapidated condition, during the English Civil War Caernarfon Castle was held by Royalists, and was besieged three times by Parliamentarian forces. This was the last time the castle was used in war. Caernarfon Castle was neglected until the 19th century when the state funded repairs. In 1911, Caernarfon Castle was used for the investiture of the Prince of Wales, and again in 1969. It is part of the World Heritage Site "Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd".

History

 

Begun in 1283 and still incomplete when building work ceased c1330. Built for Edward I of England, it combined the roles of fortification, palace and administrative centre. A motte and bailey castle had been built here in the late C11 by Earl Hugh of Chester, although it became a residence of Welsh princes, including Llewelyn ap Gruffudd, after the Welsh regained control of Gwynedd by 1115. The English conquest of N Wales followed quickly after the death of Llewelyn ap Gruffudd in 1282 and Caernarfon was built to consolidate the English gains. Edward I employed James of St George as his architect, who had previously been employed by Philip of Savoy and had designed for him the fortress-palace of St Georges d'Esperanche. James also directed the building other castles for Edward I, including Harlech, Conwy and Beaumaris, using English craftsmen and labourers. The design of Caernarfon Castle echoed the walls of Emperor Constantine's Roman city of Constantinople, which also has polygonal towers and banded stonework, and was thus intended by Edward to be an expression of imperial power. Edward I and Queen Eleanor visited Caernarfon in 1284 and it was said that their son, Edward, the first English prince of Wales, was born at the castle in 1284.

 

Construction of the castle was integrated with the construction of town walls protecting the newly established borough, the town being situated on the N side of the castle. By 1292 the southern external façade of the castle was probably complete, while on the N side the castle was protected by a ditch and the walled town. The castle was damaged during an uprising in 1294 led by Madog ap Llewelyn, but Edward I swiftly regained control of Caernarfon and the castle, where restoration work began in 1295. The uprising had demonstrated the need to complete the castle's defences on the town side, which were largely built in the period 1295-1301. Work subsequently continued at a slower pace in the period 1304-30 and included the completion of the towers, including the Eagle Tower which was completed 1316-17 and in 1316 the timber-framed 'Hall of Llewelyn', the Welsh prince's residence at Conwy, was dismantled and shipped to Caernarfon. The upper portion of the King's Gate was constructed in 1321 and included a statue of Edward of Caernarfon, who had been crowned Edward II in 1307.

 

The castle was garrisoned for nearly 2 centuries but was increasingly neglected as hostilities softened from the C16 onwards. The castle was garrisoned for Charles I during the Civil War but was surrendered to the Parliamentarians in 1646. In the C18 the castle became one of the most celebrated of ruins in Wales, which began its present phase as tourist attraction and ancient monument. Restoration was undertaken in the final quarter of the C19 under the direction of Sir Llewelyn Turner, Deputy Constable. In 1908 ownership passed from the Crown to the Office of Works and restoration work continued. This included the reinstatement of floors in most of the towers and reinstatement of the embattled wall walks by 1911. The castle was the venue for the investiture of both C20 Princes of Wales, in 1911 and 1969.

 

Exterior

 

Constructed of coursed limestone with darker stone banding to the S and E external façades between the Eagle Tower and NE Tower. The plan is polygonal, resembling a figure of 8, and constructed around an upper and a lower ward in the form of curtain walls and mainly 3-stage polygonal towers with basements (in contrast to the round towers of the town walls). The structure is in 2 main phases. The earlier is the S side, from and including the Eagle Tower to the NE Tower, was constructed mainly in the period 1283-1292, while the N side facing the walled town was built after the uprising of 1294. The curtain walls are embattled with loops to the merlons and a wall walk. Openings are characterised by the frequent use of shouldered lintels, giving rise to the alternative term 'Caernarfon lintel', and 2-centred arches. The towers have reinstated floors of c1911 on original corbels. The outer walls have arrow loops. Windows are mainly narrow single-light, but some of the mullioned windows incorporate transoms.

 

The principal entrance is the 3-storey King's Gate on the N side. It is reached across the ditch by a modern segmental-arched stone bridge with stone steps to the outer side, replacing the medieval drawbridge. The King's Gate has polygonal towers with 2-light windows to the outer facets in the middle stage and 2-light windows in the upper stage. The entrance is recessed behind a segmental moulded arch. It has a 2-centred arch beneath string courses and 2-light transomed window. Above the main arch is a statue of Edward II in a canopied niche with flanking attached pinnacles.

 

To the R is the outer wall of the kitchens and then the Well Tower, of 3 stages with basement. The Well Tower has a higher polygonal turret reinstated in the late C19 and full-height square projection on the W side housing the well shaft. The tower has 2-light windows in the middle and upper stages.

 

The Eagle Tower at the W end is the largest of the towers, having been designed to accommodate the king's lieutenant. It has 3 stages with basement and 3 higher polygonal turrets. The battlements are enriched by carved heads and eagles, although much weathered. On the N side are 2-light windows and an attached stub wall with drawbridge slot. This is the planned water gate through which water-borne supplies were intended to be conveyed to the basement of the Well Tower at high tide, but it was not completed. It has polygonal responds to the gate, a portcullis slot and 2 superimposed windows between the basement and ground-floor levels. On the N side is a flight of stone steps to an arched doorway at basement level. This postern was the main entrance for those approaching by sea. On the S side the curtain wall is built on exposed bedrock and the Queen's Tower, Chamberlain Tower and the Black Tower each have a single higher polygonal turret. The outer faces have only narrow loops. On the W side of the Chamberlain Tower are stone steps to a doorway under a shouldered lintel that led into the great hall. On the E side of the Black Tower is the shorter polygonal Cistern Tower, with the unfinished Queen's Gate at the SE end. Between the Chamberlain Tower and Black Tower the curtain wall is stepped in, from which point there is a substantial raked stone plinth continuing around to the NE Tower. The Queen's Gate has double polygonal towers linked by a straight wall above the gateway, while the openings are all narrow loops. The gateway is raised above a high basement storey (and would have been reached by the building of a massive stone ramp) and is recessed beneath a segmental arch with murder holes. The Watch Tower to the N is narrower and higher than the remaining towers, beyond which is the 2-stage NE Tower, which has a 2-light window. Returning along the N side, which was built after 1295, the curtain wall and the 4-stage Granary Tower incorporate 2-light windows.

 

The King's Gate has murder holes to the vault and porters' rooms to the L and R, leading to the interior. Internally the castle is planned around an upper ward on the E side and a lower ward on the W side. Through the entrance passage is a 2-storey projection on the R (now housing a shop), the S side of which retains 2 portcullis slots and a vault springer, indicating that a second entrance was built here, although it no longer survives above the foundations. Above the main gate is a former chapel, which retains its original piscina. The upper storey hall has window seats. On the W side of the King's Gate are the foundations of the kitchens in the lower ward, in which are 2 round foundations for copper cauldrons and springer of a former vault. The Well Tower does not have reinstated floors, but in each storey a fireplace and garderobe are retained and in the second stage is a small kitchen above the well chamber. The fireplaces all differ in detail: in the basement is a segmental arch, the lower storey a tripartite lintel, the second stage a projecting lintel on corbels with raked hood, and chamfered lintel to the upper stage. The tower has a full-height newel stair. The basement is reached by external stone steps. Between the Well Tower and Eagle Tower is a restored fireplace with a raked hood in a chamber whose outline walls are visible.

 

The Eagle Tower has stone steps to the basement to the L of the main doorway, both lower stage and basement having pointed doorways. The upper stages have 2-light windows similar to the outer faces. The thick walls incorporate mural passages and stairs. In the lower stage is a large fireplace with raked hood and a small octagonal chamber that probably served as a chapel. The great chamber in the second stage also has an octagonal chapel, which retains a stoup or piscina. Between the Eagle Tower and the NE Tower the curtain wall and towers have mural passages in addition to the wall walk and generally have stone steps in either straight flights to the wall walks or newel stairs, and most chambers in the towers have associated garderobes. The Queen's Tower, known as the 'Banner Tower' in the C14, and the Chamberlain Tower have chambers in each storey with small square subsidiary chambers that probably served as chapels, and 2-light windows. The Queen's Tower has 3 octagonal chimney shafts behind the parapet. In the Chamberlain Tower the lower storey retains a fireplace with shouldered lintel. Both towers are occupied by the museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Between Queen's Tower and Chamberlain Tower are the foundations of the great hall, while the 2 superimposed mural passages in the curtain wall have 2-light windows that formerly opened into the hall.

 

The Black Tower is smaller than the other towers and has only single chambers in each stage, with cambered fireplace in the upper chamber, and 2-light windows. The Cistern Tower has a vaulted hexagonal chamber beneath an open stone-lined rainwater tank visible on the wall walk. In the unfinished Queen's Gate the position of porters' rooms is discernible in the flanking towers of which the S has a lintelled fireplace while both have garderobes. Portcullis slots and murder holes are in the passage. The upper storey over the passage was to have been a hall but was not completed. The Watch Tower is entered by a doorway at the wall walk level only.

 

The NE Tower is simpler with single chambers in each stage, as is the Granary Tower, which incorporates a well shaft and has a fireplace with raked hood in the upper stage. Between the NE Tower and the King's Gate the curtain wall has corbels representing former buildings built against the curtain, and its mullioned windows incorporate window seats.

 

Reasons for Listing

 

Listed grade I as one of the finest medieval castles in Wales, and unique in its royal associations.

Las algas del género Bulbochaete viven ahora en los fondos del Lago de Sanabria a los que llega la luz. Crecen ancladas sobre la arena o sobre cualquier otro soporte y se encaraman hacia el cielo, formando densas marañas con los filamentos de otras algas verdes, diatomeas y cianobacterias.

 

Todas ellas tejen así unos tallos cilíndricos, pardos y algodonosos que se mueven ondeando con suavidad ante la más mínima corriente. Estas marañas que siembran los suelos del fondo del Lago, son auténticas selvas de vida microscópica que alojan a una gran cantidad de organismos. Son selvas que han crecido recientemente como respuesta al enriquecimiento en nutrientes de sus agua -vertidos de aguas residuales que a fecha de hoy siguen abonándolas-.

 

Bulbochaete es una alga verde de tallos simples unidos como eslabones, forma tallos uniseriados de tal forma que eje principal se ramifica siempre hacia un lado sin que las ramificaciones secundarias lo vuelvan a hacer. Es una alga inconfundible pues las ramificaciones secundarias siempre terminan rematando en un filamento unicelular muy largo que se va estrechando progresivamente desde la base hasta el ápice y que, además, precisamente en la base, está engrosado en un característico bulbo. Las células que forman los tallos de Bulbochaete son cilíndricas, pero siempre se hinchan algo en la parte superior.

 

El género Bulbochaete está representado por algas que viven en zonas templadas y que viven sumergidas a no mucha profundidad, ancladas siempre a diferentes tipos de soporte mediante un disco adhesivo como una ventosa que se sitúa en la base de los tallos principales. El soporte que casi siempre Bulbochaete elige para vivir, son otras algas filamentosas o plantas acuáticas que viven firmemente ancladas sobre el fondo.

 

Las células de estas algas son de un solo núcleo y suelen presentar grandes vacuolas que ocupan casi todo el contenido celular y cloroplastos pegados a la pared con uno o dos pirenoides.

 

Bulbochaete brebissonii se caracteriza por presentar unas células de 17 a 20 micras de longitud de entre 3 y 4,5 veces más largas que anchas con paredes celulares salpicadas de diminutas granulaciones. Se trata de una especie relativamente común en algunas masas de agua dulce del hemisferio norte.

 

Las estrategias de reproducción de Bulbochaete son muy variadas, hace casi cualquier cosa para sobrevivir y además lo hace con éxito. La reproducción asexual la puede llevar a cabo mediante zoosporas provistas de muchos flagelos, también a través de la germinación de unas esporas especiales inmóviles o por fragmentación de los filamentos.

 

La reproducción sexual pasa por la formación de gametos masculinos móviles y pequeños y gametos femeninos inmóviles y de gran tamaño, el resultado es la formación de un zigoto que dará lugar a cuatro células móviles que después de fijarse a un soporte, formarán nuevos filamentos.

 

En la actualidad se acepta la existencia de 53 especies dentro de este género, casi todas ellas de agua dulce. La mayoría de ellas vive en aguas poco profundas, fija a la vegetación acuática o más raramente flotando.

 

Bulbochaete es un alga cosmopolita, pero prefiere las zonas templadas y subtropicales.

Organizers in Irkutsk, Russia, held a day-long workshop on energy savings in a solar powered building as a solution to climate change and to urge politicians to pass clean energy policies. Their banner reads "350 ppm means life".

 

This was one of over 7,000 climate action events taking place in in 188 countries around the world on 10/10/10 as part of “The Global Work Party.” This synchronized international event is organized by 350.org, and is expected to be the largest day of environmental activism in history.

Siempre en silencio y sigilosa, siendo la misma en cada instante, Mayorella es diferente a cada paso y ya nunca será igual aunque lo intente, porque la esencia de su alma es siempre cambio. Dibuja su cuerpo plano sobre el fondo, contornos de islas blandas, salpicadas de volcanes en su fluir lento de lava fría y viva, mientas su pálpito se va extendiendo como una nube líquida entre las gotas, así siempre, devolviendo al agua sus reflejos de cristal.

 

Fluyendo por los los fondos con pie seguro, como un viento cierto, la ameba Mayorella se abraza a la Tierra en cada paso sumergido y extrae de ella cualquier jugo de vida, cualquier brizna de materia que pueda aprovechar, viendo sin ver, palpando sin palpar, sintiendo sin sentir, escudriña cualquier rincón y mientras va extendiéndose en mil formas con su manto invisible acaricia la piel de la tierra húmeda a cada paso

 

Nadie sabe como aprendió la ameba Mayorella a fluir contracorriente a escalar granos de arena como montañas de cumbres inalcanzables a colarse entre rendijas imposibles, a caminar viendo sin ver, a abrazar los fondos de las charcas con mil brazos que son alas, siendo como es una gota líquida animada por la vida.

 

Y así, sobre los fondos, desnuda, sin más protección que su capa invisible dentro del agua invisible Mayorella se adelanta al agua entre el lecho que la acoge palpando hasta el último rincón y con sus dedos agudos y extendidos que van cambiando a cada paso recoge con su cuerpo y lame lo que el agua dejó a merced del viento, y que esta ameba, discreta, y amorosamente recoge para que el agua sea solo agua.

 

Mayorella penardi es una especie de ameba de mediano tamaño, y como todas sus hermanas de brazos cónicos algo afilados de borde hialino y plano y un solo núcleo. Se trata de una ameba muy extendida en cualquier medio de agua dulce donde las aguas corran lentamente o se encuentren estancadas.

 

Hoy en el interior de Mayorella rueda su núcleo, en él está el centro vital de este ser, que organiza todas sus funciones y que es alma, corazón, mente y aparato reproductor al mismo tiempo; este núcleo y el de muchos de estos organismos microscópicos encierra el secreto, el misterio y la belleza de la vida.

Drepanothrix dentata no es pulgón, es una pulga, pero pulga acuática que no pica ni salta, solo tiene de pulga su minúsculo tamaño de pulga de pulgas, invisible crustáceo que a golpe de remo de sus antenas de árbol se mueve entre las nubes de sedimento que reposan en el lecho del Lago.

 

Las ramas de las antenas de este crustáceo volador recuerdan a la armadura de las alas de un murciélago y así, con alas invisibles Drepanothrix las extiende como largos remos en su caminar bajo el agua.

 

Como todos los Branquiópodos, Drepanothrix respira por las patas, sus flecos plumosos son sus branquias y recogen del agua el oxígeno que requiere para su intensa actividad.

 

El género Drepanothrix está representado en la Península Ibérica por una sola especie, Drepanothrix dentata , de la que se conocen muy pocas localidades en nuestro país, tres hasta ahora (dos de los embalses gallegos de Mao y Chandreja y otra en la Laguna de Río Pequeño en la Sierra Segundera) que con ésta del Lago serán cuatro; todas ellas situadas en el noroeste del territorio ibérico.

 

La característica morfológica más destacada de este pequeño crustáceo es la presencia de una escotadura en forma de aleta de arpón situada en el margen dorsal de su caparazón, además de otras más específicas relacionadas con la estructura de sus antenas. El margen del caparazón de Drepanothrix presenta todas las sedas de parecida longitud y dirigidas hacia la zona ventral de su cuerpo.

 

El cuerpo de Drepanothrix es corto y ovalado y se ensancha hacia la parte posterior y su cabeza, grande y de forma triangular muestra un ocelo bien desarrollado de tamaño inferior y próximo a la mitad del que tiene su ojo compuesto. Está protegido por una coraza formada por dos valvas de quitina, translúcidas y reticuladas en la zona ventral, en cuyo interior se encuentran sus delicados órganos, un corazón que late acelerado sobre el dorso, el intestino replegado y sinuoso cuyo extremo terminal se abre en la garra posterior en las hembras.

 

Solo asoman de esta armadura los ojos desiguales situados sobre un rostro plano y las antenas y anténulas, que además de órganos sensoriales, desempeñan un importante papel en el desplazamiento de estos organismos. Esta coraza no crece y por ello los branquiópodos mudan hasta cinco veces antes de conseguir alcanzar la madurez sexual.

 

Drepanothrix vive en la zona bentónica, tanto en las zonas próximas a la orilla, como en los fondos algo más profundos a los que llega la luz y suele habitar en zonas de aguas poco mineralizadas en ambientes que van desde las aguas oligotróficas a las moderamente eutróficas y es un género que se encuentra particularmente adepatado a la vida entre los detritus.

 

La morfología de los machos de esta especie no se conoce tan bien como la de las hembras, porque se encuentran en muy raras ocasiones, pero su cuerpo es más esbelto y alargado. En la Península Ibérica nunca han sido hallados ejemplares de sexo masculino y ésta es muy posiblemente la primera vez que se citan y fotografían en territorio ibérico.

 

La fotografía que mostramos, se ha realizado a 200 aumentos empleando la técnica de contraste de interferencia, se ha tomado sobre una muestra recolectada a cinco metros de profundidad, el trece de septiembre de 2015, por los buceadores del Club de buceo Arvalis en las inmediaciones de la playa de Folgoso en el Lago de Sanabria (Zamora), desde el catamarán Helios Sanabria el primer catamarán construido en el Planeta propulsado por energía eólica y solar.

Nach langem Abwägen fiel die Entscheidung für eine Serienproduktion des 300 SL, der Straßenversion W 198.

 

Die auffälligen Flügeltüren waren wegen der Fahrzeugkonstruktion nötig. Erst nach der Konstruktion des Rahmens, die zum Vorteil der Stabilität weit nach oben reichte, fiel auf, dass herkömmliche Türen aufgrund dieser Rahmenkonstruktion an den Fahrzeugflanken nicht einsetzbar waren. Dies war die Geburtsstunde der Flügeltüren bei Mercedes. Im englischsprachigen Raum bekam der W 198 wegen seiner Türen den Beinamen „Gullwing“ (Möwenflügel). Ein dezenter Stab ließ sich zum Öffnen der Türen aus der Karosserie schwenken, entriegelte das Schloss und ließ die von zwei Teleskopfedern unterstützte Tür nach oben schwenken.

Mud Island (not actually an island) is a small peninsula, surrounded by the Mississippi River to the west and the Wolf River Harbor to the east. In 1960, the Wolf River was diverted so that it flows into the Mississippi River north of Mud Island. Mud Island River Park, located on the south end of the island, opened to the public in 1982. It is located within the Memphis city limits, 1.2 miles from the coast of downtown, and houses a museum, restaurants, and an amphitheater. It is accessible by the Memphis Suspension Railway (a monorail), by foot (via a footbridge located on top of the monorail), by ferry, or automobile.

On the Sixth Day, the Creator Speaks, and Each Kind of Living Creature in His Mind Makes Its Appearance, One After Another

Imperceptibly, the Creator’s work of making all things had continued for five days, immediately following which the Creator welcomed the sixth day of His creation of all things. This day was another new beginning, and another extraordinary day. What, then, was the Creator’s plan on the eve of this new day? What new creatures would He produce, would He create? Listen, that is the voice of the Creator….

 

“And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creeps on the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good” (Gen 1:24-25). What living creatures does this include? The Scriptures say: cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind. Which is to say that, on this day there were not only all sorts of living creatures upon the earth, but they were all classified according to kind, and, likewise, “God saw that it was good.”

 

As during the previous five days, with the same tone, on the sixth day the Creator ordered the birth of the living creatures that He desired, and that they appeared upon the earth, each according to their kind. When the Creator exerts His authority, none of His words are spoken in vain, and so, on the sixth day, each living creature that He had intended to create appeared at the appointed time. As the Creator said “Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind,” the earth was at once filled with life, and upon the land there suddenly emerged the breath of all sorts of living creatures…. In the grassy green wilderness, stout cows, swishing their tails to and fro, appeared one after the other, bleating sheep gathered themselves into herds, and neighing horses began to gallop…. In an instant, the vast expanses of silent grassland exploded with life…. The appearance of these various livestock was a beautiful sight upon the tranquil grassland, and brought with it boundless vitality…. Nashville is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Tennessee. The city is the county seat of Davidson County and is located on the Cumberland River. It is the 23rd most-populous city in the United States.

 

Named for Francis Nash, a general of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, the city was founded in 1779. The city grew quickly due to its strategic location as a port on the Cumberland River and, in the 19th century, a railroad center. Nashville seceded with Tennessee during the American Civil War; in 1862 it was the first state capital in the Confederacy to fall to Union troops. Nissan Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. Owned by the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, it is primarily used for football and is the home field of the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League (NFL) and the Tennessee State Tigers of Tennessee State University. The stadium is also the site of the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, a postseason college football bowl game played each December, and from 2020 until 2022 will be the home field of Nashville SC of Major League Soccer (MLS). Nissan Stadium is also used for large concerts, such as the CMA Music Festival nightly concerts, which take place for four days every June. Facilities are included to enable the stadium to host other public events, meetings, parties, and gatherings.

 

Nissan Stadium is located on the east bank of the Cumberland River, directly across the river from downtown Nashville and has a listed seating capacity of 69,143. Its first event was a preseason game between the Titans and the Atlanta Falcons on August 27, 1999. Since opening in 1999, it has been known by multiple names, including Adelphia Coliseum (1999–2002), The Coliseum (2002–2006), and LP Field (2006–2015).

 

The stadium features three levels of seating, with the lower bowl completely encompassing the field. The club and upper levels form the stadium's dual towers, rising above the lower bowl along each sideline. All of the stadium's luxury suites are located within the towers. Three levels of suites are located in the stadium's eastern tower: one between the lower and club levels, and two between the club and upper levels. The western tower has only two levels of suites, both between the club and upper levels. The pressbox is located between the lower and club levels in the western tower. Nissan Stadium's dual videoboards are located behind the lower bowl in each end zone.

 

The playing surface of Nissan Stadium is Tifsport Bermuda Sod, a natural grass. However, the relatively warm climate of Nashville, combined with the wear and tear of hosting a game nearly every weekend, usually results in a resodding of the area "between the hashes" in late November.

 

On Nissan Stadium's eastern side is the Titans Pro Shop, a retail store which sells team merchandise. It remains open year-round and maintains an exterior entrance for use on non-event dates.

In 1989 I left apartheid South Africa and spent much of the next year travelling Europe. In October I found myself in the outback of Turkey, and the word on the street was that the Berlin Wall was about to fall. With it's fascinating history, cold war angst and strong David Bowie connection, Berlin had always been on my "must visit" list and I accelerated my plans to get there. Unfortunately the wall began crumbling on the evening of November 9, 1989 and continued over the following days and weeks. Nevertheless, I skipped through the Greek islands and caught the ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens to Brindisi in Italy. I decided to bypass Naples and caught a fast train north to Rome. I think it was either on the ferry or on the train that I met fellow traveller, Serge Bowers from Pennsylvania in the USA. He and I made good companions and has a Chianti-fuelled blast through Rome, Florence, Pisa and Venice (but that's another story).

 

On November 25, Serge and I went our own ways - he headed for Amsterdam, while I spent a couple of days in Milan, visiting the magnificent Il Museo Storico dell’Alfa Romeo in Arese. I then skipped through Switzerland (Lausanne, Bern, Luzern and Lurich) beofre finally making it to Stuttgart in Germany, taking in the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche Museum. By this time (December 4) I was running low on cash and so resorted to hitch-hiking from Stuttgart to Mannheim, heading for Bonn where I was going to be staying with Prof. Dr. Marcella Rietschel (a Research Fellow at the Institute of Human Genetics, University of Bonn) who I had met in Istanbul in October. It was freezing cold and snowing out on the road, and by the time I reached Mannheim, I had had enough and headed to the Hauptbahnhof. After a cup of steaming coffee, I bought a ticket to Bonn, boarded the milk-train and continued the journey north. As fate would have it, I ended up in Zeppelinheim, close to Frankfurt, and that extraordinary interlude is detailed here.

 

Being on the bones of my financial arse, and with a severe cold snap making hitch-hiking a really bad idea, I now resorted to using the Mitfahrzentrale - an organised hitch-hiking (or "cap pooling") service where a driver can register how many spare seats they have in their car and where they are travelling from, to, and on what date. Potential passengers are provided with contact details and descriptions of the journey including any proposed stops along the way. As all travellers share costs, the savings can be extensive and it also serves as a good way to meet interesting people and to practice your German!

 

Our route to the east The so-called "inner German border" (a.k.a. "Zonengrenze") was the frontier between the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) and the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG, West Germany) from 1949 to 1990. The border was a physical manifestation of Winston Churchill's metaphorical Iron Curtain that separated the Soviet and Western blocs during the Cold War. The border could be crossed legally only through a limited number of routes and foreigners were able to traverse East German territory to or from West Berlin via a limited number of road corridors, the most used of which was at Helmstedt-Marienborn on the Hanover–Berlin A2 autobahn. Codenamed Checkpoint Alpha, this was the first of three Allied checkpoints on the road to Berlin. The others were Checkpoint Bravo, where the autobahn crossed from East Germany into West Berlin, and most famous of all, Checkpoint Charlie, the only place where non-Germans could cross from West to East Berlin. Lengthy inspections caused long delays to traffic at the crossing points, and for some the whole experience was very disturbing: "Travelling from west to east through [the inner German border] was like entering a drab and disturbing dream, peopled by all the ogres of totalitarianism, a half-lit world of shabby resentments, where anything could be done to you, I used to feel, without anybody ever hearing of it, and your every step was dogged by watchful eyes and mechanisms." (Jan Morris) Personally, having spent almost three decades of my life under the oppression of the apartheid regime, it felt all too familiar.

 

So, after an uncomfortable 6-8 hour road trip, I was finally there - Berlin! One of my German friends from South Africa (P.A.) had been a regular visitor to Berlin during our high school and university years, before relocating to the city in the mid-80's. In those days it made a lot of sense - getting out of South Africa after studying meant escaping two years military service with the south African Defence Force and moving to Berlin meant avoiding conscription into the German military as well. That is, in order to encourage young people to move to West Berlin, they were lured in with exemptions from national service and good study benefits. It was December 8, 1989 and P.A. was unfortunately not in town. But a mutual friend was - L.M. had left Africa at about the same time as Pierre and was an aspirant artist in Berlin. He offered me a place to stay and we spent a brilliant week together, partying, clubbing and taking in all the delights that this city in change had to offer! I don't remember too much, but have some photos that I am sharing for the first time, a quarter of a century later, to the day.

The window depicts St. Helen [Wikipedia], the mother of Emperor Constantine, who discovered and brought to Rome the remains of Christ's cross. The Latin inscription reads "Ave O Crux. Spes Unica." That is: Hail O Cross, our only hope."

 

Inscription: "From her loving husband & children to the memory of Ellen Coughlin RIP". Ellen Coughlin is my daughters' (Helen's and Laura's) great-great-great grandmother. Ellen Coughlin (née O'Brien) was born Ardfield, County Cork, Munster, Ireland, on 11/04/1845.

 

It is highly probable that Andrew Coughlin and Ellen O'Brien, with their respective families, emigrated from Ireland at the time of the Great Famine (Ireland) [Wikipedia] (otherwise known as the Irish Potato Famine), as did a great many others during that tragedy.

Could there be any correspondence between the name Coughlin and the name Cú Chulainn [Wikipedia]? I first came across this mythological character from ancient Irish Celtic tradition whilst watching the TV documentary Ireland's Treasures Uncovered [BBC iPlayer, presented by Dr Alice Robert] in February 2016. One of the artefacts discussed in this documentary [38 minutes from start time] is the Book of the Dun Cow (Lebor na hUidre [Wikipedia]). This book dates from the 12th century, and is written in the Irish language. It is the earliest book written entirely in Irish. Although written by monks in the 12th century, its stories, this inherited lore, are not Christian, but instead the stories related within in it are pre-Christian, or pagan. The epic of Táin Bó Cúailnge [Wikipedia] tells the story of Cú Chulainn, the most important character in the book.

 

If there is any bearing from this ancient Irish mythology on the origins of the name Coughlin, then this is most intriguing.

Television documentary that speaks of the Great Irish Famine or the Potato Famine: Great Irish Journeys with Martha Kearney [pronounced Carney] - [BBC iPlayer]

 

* The television programme referred to above visits the site of a mass burial of 10,000 people at Skibbereen, County Cork. These people died as a result of the famine that struck Ireland in the 1840s.

St. Louis is an independent city and inland port in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is situated along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. The Missouri River merges with the Mississippi River just north of the city. These two rivers combined form the fourth longest river system in the world. The Grove is a business district located along Manchester Avenue (Missouri Route 100) between Kingshighway Boulevard and Vandeventer Avenue in the Forest Park Southeast (FPSE) neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Formerly known as the Manchester Strip, the retail drag was first developed in the late 19th century to serve the working-class population of Forest Park Southeast. Today, the Grove is home to a variety of restaurants, bars, and clubs, including a significant number of LGBT-oriented establishments. It was a really good haul this week. A guy had sooooooo much comic book stuff that he was giving away for free because he didn't want to take it back inside.

 

We accidentally ended up at an estate sale for a dead friend. That was kind of dark.

 

We saw a yard setting up a bunch of chairs and we were wondering what that was about. Turns out, it's a Burner Peace Love & Ice Cream yearly party where they play music and have about 70 of their friends over. We didn't know the people there, but they knew of MakePeace Manor.

BACKSTORY: Got up around 6:35AM, made it out driving by 7:39 AM and went out until 1:28, and then again from 2:07 to 2:36 for a total of ~6 hours. Spent $143.15 plus ~$5.53 gas for 64.3 miles of driving (25.8 mpg @ $2.22/G), for a total cost of $148.68. We drove to 65 yard sales, stopping at 39 (60%) of them. We made 115 purchases (150 items) for a total estimated value of$1,400.57, leading to a profit/savings of $245.74. So in essence, we multiplied our $148.68 investment by 9.58. (Also, if you think about it, the profit counts for even more when you consider that we have to earn $1,400.57 on the job, pre-tax, in order to take home the $1,228.72 in cash that we saved. How long does $ of disposable income take to earn, vs the 6 hrs we spent here?). Anyway, this works out to a *post-tax* "wage" of $245.74/hr as a couple or $122.87/hr per person.

The biggest building in the "Alter St. Mathäus Kirchhof" apart from the church is the gravesite of the Bankerfamily Hansemann. Really unobtrusive are the graves of Grimm, Jacob Ludwig Carl and Wilhelm Carl with the byname Brothers Grimm , German Brüder Grimm German brothers famous for their classic collections of folk songs and folktales, especially for Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812–22; generally known as Grimm's Fairy Tales), which led to the birth of the science of folklore. Jacob, especially, did important work in historical linguistics and Germanic philology.

Beginnings and Kassel period.

 

Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm were the oldest in a family of five brothers and one sister. Their father, Philipp Wilhelm, a lawyer, was town clerk in Hanau and later justiciary in Steinau, another small Hessian town, where his father and grandfather had been ministers of the Calvinistic Reformed Church. The father's death in 1796 brought social hardships to the family; the death of the mother in 1808 left 23-year-old Jacob with the responsibility of four brothers and one sister. Jacob, a scholarly type, was small and slender with sharply cut features, while Wilhelm was taller, had a softer face, and was sociable and fond of all the arts. After attending the high school in Kassel, the brothers followed their father's footsteps and studied law at the University of Marburg (1802-06) with the intention of entering civil service. At Marburg they came under the influence of Clemens Brentano, who awakened in both a love of folk poetry, and Friedrich Karl von Savigny, cofounder of the historical school of jurisprudence, who taught them a method of antiquarian investigation that formed the real basis of all their later work. Others, too, strongly influenced the Grimms, particularly the philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803), with his ideas on folk poetry. Essentially, they remained individuals, creating their work according to their own principles. In 1805 Jacob accompanied Savigny to Paris to do research on legal manuscripts of the Middle Ages; the following year he became secretary to the war office in Kassel. Because of his health, Wilhelm remained without regular employment until 1814. After the French entered in 1806, Jacob became private librarian to King Jérôme of Westphalia in 1808 and a year later auditeur of the Conseil d'État but returned to Hessian service in 1813 after Napoleon's defeat. As secretary to the legation, he went twice to Paris (1814–15), to recover precious books and paintings taken by the French from Hesse and Prussia. He also took part in the Congress of Vienna (September 1814–June 1815). Meantime, Wilhelm had become secretary at the Elector's library in Kassel (1814), and Jacob joined him there in 1816. By that time the brothers had definitely given up thoughts of a legal career in favour of purely literary research. In the years to follow they lived frugally and worked steadily, laying the foundations for their lifelong interests. Their whole thinking was rooted in the social and political changes of their time and the challenge these changes held. Jacob and Wilhelm had nothing in common with the fashionable “Gothic” Romanticism of the 18th and 19th centuries. Their state of mind made them more Realists than Romantics. They investigated the distant past and saw in antiquity the foundation of all social institutions of their days. But their efforts to preserve these foundations did not mean that they wanted to return to the past. From the beginning, the Grimms sought to include material from beyond their own frontiers—from the literary traditions of Scandinavia, Spain, The Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, England, Serbia, and Finland.

 

They first collected folk songs and tales for their friends Achim von Arnim and Brentano, who had collaborated on an influential collection of folk lyrics in 1805, and the brothers examined in some critical essays the essential difference between folk literature and other writing. To them, folk poetry was the only true poetry, expressing the eternal joys and sorrows, the hopes and fears of mankind.

 

Encouraged by Arnim, they published their collected tales as the Kinder- und Hausmärchen, implying in the title that the stories were meant for adults and children alike. In contrast to the extravagant fantasy of the Romantic school's poetical fairy tales, the 200 stories of this collection (mostly taken from oral sources, though a few were from printed sources) aimed at conveying the soul, imagination, and beliefs of people through the centuries—or at a genuine reproduction of the teller's words and ways. The great merit of Wilhelm Grimm is that he gave the fairy tales a readable form without changing their folkloric character. The results were threefold: the collection enjoyed wide distribution in Germany and eventually in all parts of the globe (there are now translations in 70 languages); it became and remains a model for the collecting of folktales everywhere; and the Grimms' notes to the tales, along with other investigations, formed the basis for the science of the folk narrative and even of folklore. To this day the tales remain the earliest “scientific” collection of folktales. The Kinder- und Hausmärchen was followed by a collection of historical and local legends of Germany, Deutsche Sagen (1816–18), which never gained wide popular appeal, though it influenced both literature and the study of the folk narrative. The brothers then published (in 1826) a translation of Thomas Crofton Croker's Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland, prefacing the edition with a lengthy introduction of their own on fairy lore. At the same time, the Grimms gave their attention to the written documents of early literature, bringing out new editions of ancient texts, from both the Germanic and other languages. Wilhelm's outstanding contribution was Die deutsche Heldensage (“The German Heroic Tale”), a collection of themes and names from heroic legends mentioned in literature and art from the 6th to the 16th centuries, together with essays on the art of the saga.

 

While collaborating on these subjects for two decades (1806–26), Jacob also turned to the study of philology with an extensive work on grammar, the Deutsche Grammatik (1819–37). The word deutsch in the title does not mean strictly “German,” but it rather refers to the etymological meaning of “common,” thus being used to apply to all of the Germanic languages, the historical development of which is traced for the first time. He represented the natural laws of sound change (both vowels and consonants) in various languages and thus created bases for a method of scientific etymology; i.e., research into relationships between languages and development of meaning. In what was to become known as Grimm's law, Jacob demonstrated the principle of the regularity of correspondence among consonants in genetically related languages, a principle previously observed by the Dane Rasmus Rask. Jacob's work on grammar exercised an enormous influence on the contemporary study of linguistics, Germanic, Romance, and Slavic, and it remains of value and in use even now. In 1824 Jacob Grimm translated a Serbian grammar by his friend Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, writing an erudite introduction on Slavic languages and literature.

 

He extended his investigations into the Germanic folk-culture with a study of ancient law practices and beliefs published as Deutsche Rechtsaltertümer (1828), providing systematic source material but excluding actual laws. The work stimulated other publications in France, The Netherlands, Russia, and the southern Slavic countries and has not yet been superseded.

  

The Göttingen years.

 

The quiet contentment of the years at Kassel ended in 1829, when the brothers suffered a snub—perhaps motivated politically—from the Elector of Hessen-Kassel: they were not given advancement following the death of a senior colleague. Consequently, they moved to the nearby University of Göttingen, where they were appointed librarians and professors. Jacob Grimm's Deutsche Mythologie, written during this period, was to be of far-reaching influence. From poetry, fairy tales, and folkloristic elements, he traced the pre-Christian faith and superstitions of the Germanic people, contrasting the beliefs to those of classical mythology and Christianity. The Mythologie had many successors all over Europe, but often disciples were not as careful in their judgments as Jacob had been. Wilhelm published here his outstanding edition of Freidank's epigrams. But again fate overtook them. When Ernest Augustus, duke of Cumberland, became king of Hanover, he high-handedly repealed the constitution of 1833, which he considered too liberal. Two weeks after the King's declaration, the Grimms, together with five other professors (the “Göttingen Seven”), sent a protest to the King, explaining that they felt themselves bound by oath to the old constitution. As a result they were dismissed, and three professors, including Jacob, were ordered to leave the kingdom of Hanover at once. Through their part in this protest directed against despotic authority, they clearly demonstrated the academic's sense of civil responsibilities, manifesting their own liberal convictions at the same time. During three years of exile in Kassel, institutions in Germany and beyond (Hamburg, Marburg, Rostock, Weimar, Belgium, France, The Netherlands, and Switzerland) tried to obtain the brothers' services.

  

The Berlin period.

 

In 1840 they accepted an invitation from the king of Prussia, Frederick William IV, to go to Berlin, where as members of the Royal Academy of Sciences they lectured at the university. There they began their most ambitious enterprise, the Deutsches Wörterbuch, a large German dictionary intended as a guide for the user of the written and spoken word as well as a scholarly reference work. In the dictionary, all German words found in the literature of the three centuries “from Luther to Goethe” were given with their historical variants, their etymology, and their semantic development; their usage in specialized and everyday language was illustrated by quoting idioms and proverbs. Begun as a source of income in 1838 for the brothers after their dismissal from Göttingen, the work required generations of successors to bring the gigantic task to an end in our day. Jacob lived to see the work proceed to the letter F, while Wilhelm only finished the letter D. The dictionary became an example for similar publications in other countries: Britain, France, The Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. Jacob's philological research later led to a history of the German language, Geschichte der deutschen Sprache, in which he attempted to combine the historical study of language with the study of early history. Research into names and dialects was stimulated by Jacob Grimm's work, as were ways of writing and spelling—for example, he used roman type and advocated spelling German nouns without capital letters.

 

For some 20 years they worked in Prussia's capital, respected and free from financial worries. Much of importance can be found in the brothers' lectures and essays, the prefaces and reviews (Kleinere Schriften) they wrote in this period. In Berlin they witnessed the Revolution of 1848 and took an active part in the political strife of the succeeding years. In spite of close and even emotional ties to their homeland, the Grimms were not nationalists in the narrow sense. They maintained genuine—even political—friendships with colleagues at home and abroad, among them the jurists Savigny and Eichhorn; the historians F.C. Dahlmann, G.G. Gervinus, and Jules Michelet; and the philologists Karl Lachmann, John Mitchell Kemble, Jan Frans Willems, Vuk Karadžić, and Pavel Josef Šafařik. Nearly all academies in Europe were proud to count Jacob and Wilhelm among their members. The more robust Jacob undertook many journeys for scientific investigations, visiting France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Denmark, and Sweden. Jacob remained a bachelor; Wilhelm married Dorothea Wild from Kassel, with whom he had three children: Herman (literary and art historian, 1828–1901), Rudolf (jurist, 1830–89), and Auguste (1832–1919). The graves of the brothers are in the Matthäikirchhof in Berlin.

Acanthocystis, ameba sol extiende sus tenues rayos en el agua y se sujeta a ella prendida de estos finos hilos, para tomar la luz del cielo y repartir así su brillo sumergido en trazos de vida. Protegida en dos envueltas de escamas de cristal de tallo recto que rematan en un ápice en forma de copa estrecha y cónica, esta diminuta ameba brinda siempre por la vida que tiene asegurada bajo esta protección.

 

En su interior Acanthocystis arropa a un buen número de algas verdes del grupo de las "Chlorellas" a las que protege en su cerco de astro de agua, ellas tomando la luz del sol del cielo, dan vida a este astro vivo, sol de agua que orbita silencioso y levitando.

 

Acanthocystis y Chlorella han firmado un pacto de alianza…tan diferentes y sin embargo tan amigos, siempre en necesario abrazo de vida. Chlorella se servirá de la luz del sol para fabricar azúcares y otros compuestos que servirán de alimento a Acanthocystis. La ameba sol protegerá su tesoro de granos verdes y lo transportará protegido por sus rayos de cristal.

 

Los delicados brazos de Acanthocystis, también buscan resguardarse y por eso se esconden y asoman entre el bosque de rayos de sílice, que como púas amables defienden la vida de este heliozoo. Son dos barreras, unas cortas que constituyen el primer frente de defensa y otras largas que se hacen copa hacia el final, como queriendo abaracar queriendo abaracr más espacio y acentuar su carácter defensivo.

 

El pequeño sol verde que recorre suavemente el agua llevando siempre la luz del día, muy probablemente corresponde a Acanthocystis pectinata una de las especies del género de más pequeños tamaño y caracterizada por la presencia de dos barreras de escamas de cristal rematadas en un cono amplio en forma de cáliz, una densa y apretada apenas separadas un par de micras de la superficie del cuerpo y otra laxa y larga que se pierde abrazando el agua que deja su cuerpo sostenido en espacio infinito de cualquier gota limpia.

 

Acanthocystis pectinata vive entre las algas y la vegetación acuática de pequeñas masa de agua limpia y arroyos de curso lento y hoy procede de las inmediaciones de Mahíde, en las inmediaciones de la Sierra de la Culebra en pleno corazón de la cormarca zamorana de Aliste y ha sido grabada a 400 aumentos empleando la técnica de contraste de interferencia
