The Falklands have 2 Steamer Duck, the Falkland Steamer Duck and the Flying Steamer duck. This is the Male Steamer Duck and the previous image is the Female Steamer Duck.... both are "Falkland Steamer" and they do not fly. They are very common ducks and I have seen large flocks of them floating at a distance on the ocean, especially when we visited Sea Lion Island. It is very difficult to distinguish the one who can fly from the other one when they are on the water. Robin Woods tells us that "the best distinguishing features are the shape and colour of the bill. Both male and female have slightly longer, more slender and concave bills." We have seen and photograph both species of "Steamer" ducks but I find it hard to distinguish which is which even when examining the pictures closely.... I only know that we saw both type of "Steamer" because we saw some flying and some who did not. Local names for the non-flying duck is "Logger" or "Loggerhead" This one is either an optimistic or just pretending he can fly :)

Dedicated to all the flickr friends who decide to stay.
I'm using love of nature and colour in my attempt to be optimistic.
When I checked the vineyards a week ago everything was still green and I wasn't super optimistic to find some nice autumn colours when I returned today but oh what a difference a week makes !
Big Dutch ship on the Mosel filled with coal clearly shows that
Germany switches back to coal to overcome the current energy crisis. The image seems so much typical for our current time that it is hard to imagine that it is less connected to today that you might expect.
To clarify what I mean, I give a link below to a YouTube song from Roland Van Campenhout, an excellent Belgian musician and performing artist with his song about the energy crisis and the urge to go back to coal. This song appeared on his CD The Great Atomic Power, which came out in ....... 2005.
The text of this song is very visionary and the song is performed in a way that could only be done this way in Belgium....., with an artistic connection to Congo Africa.
It is all very refreshing and rather optimistic, but it is first of all a song about today, written more than 15 years ago. Enjoy!
Greenhouse orchid, never having known anything but optimum conditions, has no reason to be otherwise. Enid a A. Haupt Conservatory, New York Botanical Garden, the Bronx, NYC -- May 21, 2022
I was lost in thought today as I took a break from reality and immersed myself in the thrilling adventures at Warner Brothers World in Abu Dhabi. While exploring the Hall of Justice, I couldn't help but ponder why our contemporary world appears to have more villains than superheroes at the helm. Justice is essential, and it's about time that those who've been evading the law for far too long are held accountable for all their misdeeds, big and small.
I'm optimistic that our future will be enriched by everyday superheroes who may not possess magical abilities, but who embody the invaluable qualities of honesty, kindness, and empathy.

Two local inshore fishing boats tied up at the quayside at Scarborough harbour, Optimistic and Enterprise at dusk on Thursday evening.
I had purposely gone to the harbour to get some sunset shots as the sky had been a very vibrant orange on the previous evening but as usual I did not have a camera on my person only my iphone and while I got off a couple of shots I wasn't happy with the images and so made the trip down again the following evening. But the sky was nowhere near as vibrant though I was quite happy with a couple of my results.
Thanks for taking the time to view this and other images in my photo stream.
I had planned to post a forward-looking optimistic post to anticipate the New Years celebration. However my community was visited by a horrific fire today that has put a huge damper on local spirits. A grass fire likely started by a downed power line spread quickly fanned by 80 mph winds into two communities east of Boulder, Superior and Louisville. At least 600 homes and several businesses were quickly consumed, making this the most destructive fire in Colorado history. Additionally a hospital was evacuated, but thankfully was not damaged by the fire. At this time no deaths have been reported, but a thorough evaluation won’t be possible for a few days. Ironically our first major snowstorm is forecast for tomorrow.
This photo is not the Marshall fire described above, but rather is from the 2020 Calwood fire, also in Boulder County. The scene provides a sense of the overpowering nature of fires in an arid landscape, which are becoming a more common occurrence outside of the “fire season,” likely due to climate change.
Historic flood levels have caused terrible devastation in the Fraser Valley but the kindness, cooperation, giving and care shared by the community is truly cause for a positive and optimistic view of things!
Anything Goes 2021: Colour Monochrome
I came across this strange scene of an ant pulling on a wing of a healthy sweat bee. Despite of its size, the ant was giving the bee a hard time, because it could not take off.
A more optimistic view of rural Ireland than yesterday's photo, though some people see those wind farms as (pardon the pun) 'ass'-inine..... :-)
