Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus) Having stolen the flat fish from a Cormorant in the harbour then had no idea what to do next
Yesterday, our lawn was covered in snow and frozen solid. Then, last night in a big wind-storm and heavy rains, the temperature shot up to thirteen-point-something (uhh, that's like 55 degrees F.). And these guys appeared. Too bad, because already, by mid-afternoon, the temperature is just above freezing and tonight it'll be minus seven (about twenty F).
It'll be a few more weeks yet before the snowdrops get their flowers pollinated.
Several miles of walking along this logging road finally brings us near the forest trailhead that leads to Twin Falls. A most welcome sight.

Since its creation in Lyon, France, in 1894, the Michelin Man, or Bibendum, the Michelin tire company mascot, has undergone several cosmetic changes to reflect the contemporary moment. Similarly, KAWS's CHUM figure, a nod to the cheery, rotend Michelin Man, has changed with the times.
In 1999, KAWS introduced CHUM to the world in two distinct poses: in an energized mid-run stance, and standing proud, hands on the hips. A "chum" is, by definition, a close friend or pal. In its early iterations, CHUM embodied good humour and optimism. In 2020, almost two decades after its debut, KAWS brought CHUM back in a decidedly un-celebratory mood. Here, it stands downcast, shoulders slumped, arms hanging dejectedly by its side. In What Party, CHUM reflects back to us the emotional discord of 2020, a year marred by a global health crisis and socio-economic upheaval.

I visited the lake again today. The Pelican remains at the lake. From a distance I watched as it sort of rambled forward, slowly exercising its open wings. It never attempted to take off.
If you look at the photo, the injured wing is its right wing, shown on the left here. No obvious deformities. From my observations and from what others have told me, this bird has been in place for at least two weeks. Because there is no obvious 'break'...or anything else obvious to the eye...it may be a muscle, ligament or tendon injury. Any of those might heal. My subjective interpretation of what I saw today was the Pelican was 'testing' its wings, to see how they would work. The photo looks 'normal', but I have to say that when the wings are folded, the right wing significantly droops and drags along the ground.
Though rescue seems unlikely, for a number of reasons, perhaps there is hope that the injury will indeed heal itself. And the bird does not LOOK ragged, undernourished or lackadaisical. It looks normal, except for the dragging wing and the inability, apparently, to fly.
Can you feel optimistic when you look at this photo? I do. Is it just a feeling or do the colors make me feel that! I really don't know.

Willy Whackit dreamed of playing baseball in the majors. He knew if he hung out in the corn long enough, the scouts would come. Unfortunately, Willy had no idea what corn looked like and, so, hanging out in the bushes didn't make him famous. Willy did get discovered, arrested and now has a photo on the post office wall after he jumped bail.
