One of the great casualties of the redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road station as part of the huge Crossrail project was the Astoria, on the corner of Charing Cross Road and Sutton Row, which opened in 1927 as a cinema, on the site of a Crosse & Blackwell warehouse. It was designed by Edward A. Stone, who also designed the Brixton Academy, and the Rainbow in Finsbury Park. In 1977 it became a theatre, and, after closing for a year in 1984, reopened as a live music venue and a nightclub in 1985. I used to visit a lot in the 1980s, when its bouncers had a fearsome reputation for violence, and, on one particularly memorable occasion, I saw Nirvana when they were just third on the bill to Tad and Mudhoney. The Astoria closed in January 2009 after it was the subject of a compulsory purchase order, and was demolished later that year. I took this photo of the Crossrail hoarding outside the former site of the Astoria on September 3, 2012.

See here for an extraordinary time-lapse film of the Astoria being dismantled, along with all the other buildings beside it, in the block that used to run all the way to Oxford Street: www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-05/18/demolition-astoria

Shot with Kat at the House of Nightmares Group shoot on 11/29/08. It was a blast doing this set in a dark, cold, and dirty basement. If anyone ever has the oppurtunity to work with Kat.... Do NOT pass up the oppurtunity!

Shot with a Nikon D300, 17 - 200 MM VR lens and a SB800 flash. I used 2 Britek 1500 watt strobes (1 behind an umbrella diffuser and the other as a main with umbrella) to balance out some light in this dark warehouse basement.

From our trip to Aurangabad, Jan 08-10 2010

The Making:

Even this pic dint happen that easily. We climed the steps up till the cave and were a little out of breath as it was sunny.

I had to fiddle with the settings while climbing up as there was so much of variation in the lighting from one frame to the other

and the cam didnt act smart enough to get what I wanted.

The senior citizen in the picture was sitting close to the entrance of Cave No 1 and that being he entrance to the chain

of caves to follow there was a ticket counter and loads of people were entering the premises.

So seeing the oppurtunity I got into position clicked a few, as I mentioned before since I had to change my exposure quiet often the first couple of shots I clicked came under exposed as I was shooting outdoors and suddenly I shot a subject in shade. So I was all in a hurry not to miss this frame and in the next click my card was full to add to my frustration. I hurried through the process of changing it and got back to clicking again.

In the next 1 or 2 shot I got the frame I wanted since I delayed the click till I felt the posture and expression went well.

Though the crowd was disturbing the shoot it was also helping me to keep his focus off me as its the entrance there were n no of people clicking those amazing structures and I tried to make sure I am not disturbing him. Since I was shooting a lower angle the cam was never pointed at him, I guess that added to his comfort

Thank you all for watching and for your awesome comments.

"Opportunity knocks at the strangest times, It's not the time that matters But how you answer the door." Steve Gray

I really like this quote, it resonates with some current events in my life.

Set up:

Two SB-800 flashes gelled blue, triggered by Nikon CLS system, were set in the room just around the corner of the doorframe. Main flash on camera was set to manual and 1/128th power. I had to experiment with the door opening width, if it was too narrow, the flashes wouldn't fire.

I had no plans to do a shoot today but out of blue came a call from Kristina who was wondering if I was available. With nothing planned for the afternoon I jumped at the oppurtunity.

I took this shot for this week's challenge "Rim Lighting" for the group Strobist Sundays.

We left the beaches for a few hours to hike Sage Mountain Park on Tortola. It is the highest point on the island and most of the trail leads through rain forest. There is also a large area of mahogany trees.

Despite it being highest point on the island there were no overlooks/photo oppurtunities. We only got this shot because we had to make a "pit stop" along the trail while hiking. It ended up being a good pit stop though.

Keeping the music theme going.

Momma always told me, never NEVER look directly into the sun: Even if it ment losing a neat photo oppurtunity...a small aperture and a wide lens with moderate cropping made this an easy choice for my POD today.

It is not Madness as many may call it, it is not a passion as many may claim that, it is a feeling that you enjoy when you are on a high.

Khusro and I on our Autumn tour to Skardu and Hunza got a rare oppurtunity of shooting on 14th Moon Night. We were so passionate that without wearing anything warm we kept on clicking standing at the edges of the Duikar. The freezing cold wind and every passing minute decreasing temparature couldn't surrender the courage that we had. Finally we got down when our camera batteries finally died. And our driver kept on saying that he hadn't seen a mad person like us in his entire 25 years of driving in this mountains.

It was the last shot that we took in order to remember that freezing cold night that we passed without any warm clothes.

So I decided to have a personality week. 8D And I'm starting the "week" with a group picture. Which for anyone with cats. Is difficult. Sabastion was already on the table. So I grabbed Sammi added him and a blanket then climbed on to the counters to grab Sabrina who even though I was on the counters was still a foot above my head. Brought her down, put her on the table. Ran grabbed Storm, convinced him that he wasn't going to die. Put Britt in a sit stay and tried to convince Bello that the chairs were okay. But he doesn't know stay so he said 'screw it' and jumped off. Moved Britt to the table, replaced Storm on the table and put Bello back on the chairs which made him put his paws on the table. This time I said screw it, lol, and took three pictures before the oppurtunity was over. In this picture Sammi wacked Bello in the face and in the next it shows Brittany about to attack Bello because she now protects the cats instead of Bello. But anyway the next six days are devoted to telling you unbiasedly how I think my animals would react if you ever met them. 8D

Also I had this on before but deleted and added a cropped version.

We had this amazing oppurtunity to do the pre-wedding shoot for this adorable couple - Nithin and Saranya :)

A very curious deer gave me this oppurtunity for a frame filling portrait.

I have had a hard week with illness in the whole family (me included) so there have not been many oppurtunities for photographing. But today I decided to try to take some pictures I have been planning for a time.

In Evander's room there is a ceiling lamp which I have not fastened to the roof and therefore it hovers a short distance over the floor*. I like its soft glow and Evander enjoys using it as a punching bag. I put him down next to it and let him do his thing while I laid down in the hallway, since I was shooting with the 50mm to use its 1.8 aperture.

Byt the way: Tomorrow Evander is 6 months. Time is sure going fast these days.

The title of the photograph is in honour of Peter Adams, peteradamsmusic.com/ newest album. I have sung "the Observatory" the whole day and I like to think of the lamp as an low orbiting planet. The first of many astronomy themed decorations in his room. ;-)

*I will fix this before it becomes a hazard, but as for now he only uses his room for sleeping.

Manchester City Police’s PC Harry Knowles makes a call from the city’s first police box. The box, situated near the Ben Brierley public house on Moston Lane, was constructed in 1928.

The earliest known UK police box was opened in Sunderland in 1923.

The police box was a regular site in the days before home telephone use was common. The boxes gave the public a means to contact the police, fire or ambulance service in cases of emergency and allowed officers on patrol to contact their base. They also acted as mini police stations, allowing officers the chance to grab a brief respite from the weather and even the oppurtunity to eat one of sandwiches often carried in their tunics or helmets.

The advent of the personal radio for police officers, and greatly increased use of private telephones by the public, saw the decline and eventual removal of most police boxes but they remain an icon of British policing in the minds of many members of the public.

This is my neighbour Lewis he's a pretty cool guy, a very hard worker . this a portrait of him outside his workshop where he restores antiques. I really like the natural gradation of the walls outside his workshop they kind of give of feeling of what goes on inside. I also did a portrait of him last year but i did'nt feel that the quality of the image was as good as it could of been,so i made it my priority to get a better shot.

I recently had the oppurtunity to get a little more familiar with the Hasselblad workflow so I decided that doing a mini shoot like this was the best way to get totally familiar with everything that is Hasselblad.

This was shot with the Hasselblad H3D 39 with the HC 80mm f2.8 ive been wanting to do a portait with a very shallow DOF for a while .Im also very happy with the results of the 80mm centre sharpness at wide open!

I flew in this F4 (XV454) in the Falkland Islands back in 1984 whilst serving in the Army, I got the oppurtunity by chance although there were several other people also got a flight.

If I`m honest it scared the living daylights out of me but I think the Pilot was dishing out retribution to the other service (ARMY) as they so often do.

I am pleased to say that after all the best efforts of the Pilot I still kept my breakfast down so I think the real score was ARMY 1 - RAF 0.

It was a thrilling flight and glad that I had a true aircraft flight but just as glad when we touched down on terra firma.

Life is nothing without experiences and memories.

This photograph holds no real artistic value, it is just a piece of history a piece of my history and when I first saw it parked on the pad outside at duxford I somehow knew instinctively that it was the plane I had a ride in all those years ago and when I saw it`s number I was so gobsmacked!

Its been over for a while now and after suffering this bad knee injury shooting oppurtunities are going to be few and far between over the next few months. This was taken while riding as a passenger in my sister's car crossing Lake Jessup on the 417 bridge.

RULE: Stop what you're doing and take a photo.... like RIGHT NOW! Then you give 10 facts about yourself and tag other people other then the person who tagged you (which in this case is me).

Thanks to tambrose1 for tagging me (I don't know how to tag a person in the description so the link to her photo is down below)

www.flickr.com/photos/tambrose/5690686924/in/photosof-bla...

i was doing some paper quilling when i got tagged by tatiana and i had a plastic packet in front of me with "thank you and best wishes" written on it, so i thought, "why not take the oppurtunity to thank a few well-deserving people in the process".. so this is what u get when u combine quilling and plastic bags..

firstly, a HUUUUUUGE thanks to my friends saikat and paul for being there for me in whatever way they can, inspite of miles of distance between us (and trust me, not even people living in the same city are always that helpful), thanks to madhu for being an absolute angel, and thanks to my dad for giving me my camera in the first place, and being the greatest guy i've known

and of course, thanks to tatiana for tagging me in the first place! :)

now for the 10 facts (man! i'm really bad at these things):

1 - i live in india, in the city of kolkata, which is also known as the city of joy, and i'm an amateur photographer

2 - besides photography, i also enjoy painting, singing, writing and various other artforms, like clay modelling and quilling (but u may have already realized that)

3 - i'm a bit moody, sometimes a bit eccentric, my friends say i'm crazy, but in a good way

4 - i love rock music and can't stand pop music, especially pop "divas" and boybands.. one of my favourite bands is linkin park and i have an enormous crush on mike shinoda (it's so hard to find cuteness, intelligence and great talent all in a single guy)

5 - some of my dreams are to travel around the world, to meet sir david attenborough and james hetfield, and to sprout wings and fly in the rain (i said they were dreams)

6 - i'm incredibly scared of spiders

7 - (at this point, i'm racking my brains to remember anything interesting to come up with.. i told u i'm bad at these things).. yea.. i love to take pictures in lowlight.. oh well, that wasn't too interesting, anyway

8 - i love spicy food.. i love biriyani (a mughlai dish) and spicy phuchkaas (ultra-delicious roadside snacks) but i love desserts too

9 - i hate the phrase "female actor".. there's a word called "actress", why not use it? or alternatively, why not use "male actress"?

10 - someday, i'm gonna kidnap paul's cat, jules, and then i'll train him (jules, not paul) to sing the opera and take over the world by his feline singing skills.. that was too random, i know, but i ran out of facts about me

if u havn't fallen asleep by now, reading this loooooooong list, i congratulate u on ur patience, till then, have a terrific day! :)

Ambient for the moon.

300mm ISO 100 f/11 1/50s.

I had the idea for this shot at the last minute. Last month I wanted to get full moon photo, but I had an evening of thunderstorms. The sky was unusally clear tonight and I could not pass up the oppurtunity for this shot. My initilal approach was to shoot this with a wide angle lens and have the moon realistically represented as tiny moon going into my mouth, unfortunatly at 18mm you could not distinguish the moon from a street light. A little photoshop magic and this is what you get. I then finally processed the photo in instagram.

Until tomorrow,
