带子烧买 Scallop Siumai Dumplings - Oriental Tea House, Chadstone AUD8.90 deluxe

---

We had a very pleasant yumcha at the old Oriental Tea House in South Yarra, back when it was tucked in a small shop in a lane perpendicular to Chapel Street, so when I heard that the Chadstone store was open, I decided to give it a try.

Perhaps my expectations were too high. Or perhaps, it was just passing off cheap Chinese dimsum to Aussies who didn't know better, Asian and Caucasian alike. The clientele on the opening weekend was quite evenly split between Asians and Caucasians, lured in by the breezy indoor-outdoor dining areas, bright reds and contrasting black decor, and a distinctly Asian but modern decor.

The selection of teas are quite impressive. Tea is served in glass teapots to be shared. You can also order tea individually in mugs made of a 紫砂 deep purple porcelain, the traditional material for 紫砂壶 Chinese teapots.

Food-wise, it's a disappointment. That's not to say it is not good, but the asking price of a 特点 "deluxe" dimsum being AUD8.90 you'd expect something special. Instead, what we get is a floury and chewy filling in the 带子烧买 scallop siumai dumpling. A distinct indicator of it being undercooked. Most other yumcha places serve "deluxe" dimsum at half that price.

Before we entered, Julia exclaimed that a 烧卖 siumai pork dumpling or 虾饺 hargao prawn dumpling, a "regular" dimsum, was AUD5.90. That was almost grounds for us turning tail and heading to a nice cafe. But it is better this way, rather than be tempted every time we walked past.

Being an equal oppurtunity employer meant that we had waiters and waitresses of all races, althought predominantly Asian. Being used to dimsum names in Cantonese, hearing the mangled English translations was a bit though. Guava-flower fried prawn wonton 石榴花云吞 is a mouthful in anyone's language. Just call a wonton a wonton.

Still, Oriental Tea House seems to draw crowds at both its South Yarra and city stores, which points to a shrewd business owner understanding that the ambience and price-point is "acceptable" for the locations it is in.

an absolutely fantastic line up of four Wrights Eclipse Gemmini bodied Volvo B7's used currently on Harrogate's service 36 between Leeds and Ripon via Harrogate.

This line up greeted me at 6am Sunday morning and i only had just over an hour to capture this shot before the line up was broken for service, I took the shots at 7am just after sunrise, it would have been easier at 8am but that was not an option......... I had no input whatsoever in creating this line up.............. BUT boy did I make the most of it. !!!

birthday presents are great especially if they're a month early! i haven't had the oppurtunity to pick up my walking dead subscription at the local comic shop...primarily because they have wierd hours, but robert picked them up for me so i can get caught up. i'm holding issues 55-59. i finished them all in a short amount of time. i love this comic and i highly recommend it!

Had a weekend break down in London with Kelly yesterday. Stayed in a lovely hotel and went to a great restaurant - of course, couldn't miss the oppurtunity to get some photos.

Here's a quick on from the balcony of the Oxo Tower restaurant -hasn't come out too bad considering it's handheld.

Made a nice change from shooting in Liverpool! :)

EDIT - Looking back on this shot I'm really not keen on it - However I'm going to leave it as a lesson for myself ;)

Professional grade camera's were not allowed at the RUSH concert on Thursday evening, so I resorted to a headless portrait of one of my best friends. Austin is truly a musical mastermind and has turned me on to all sorts of music over the years, including recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees RUSH. Playing with the same line up since 1974 and putting out countless classics seeing them live was put on my bucket list many years ago. So when the oppurtunity arose to see them at Summerfest in Milwaukee I jumped on it, bought my tickets early as I could and then proceeded to wait. Finally after months of waiting for fourth of July came and I saw this most awesome band! As I said above, professional grade cameras were not allowed yet this didn't keep people from obstructing my view with their cell phones recording the concert. It's all about the experience though as I'm sure back in the day, not everyone liked lighters in the air (that's a joke) but from beginning with Subdivisions off their album Signals to YYZ, and finishing it off with 2112 it was a great overall experience I'll never forget

Shot with a Nikon D300, 17 - 200 MM VR lens and a SB800 flash. I used 2 Britek 1500 watt strobes (1 behind an umbrella diffuser and the other as a main with umbrella) to balance out some light in this dark warehouse basement.

These dollssssssssssssss

they kill me

I've been after a mini me forever, and Nanette is like perfect. So I need to get her before she sells out ;_;

Jonas is a taeyand I've had planned since I got Farah. So like forever xD I love him.. a lot xD Rayne is my fave Tae anyways. HE'S NOT NAMED AFTER THE JONAS BROTHERS XD I got his name from something and if you can guess, which I'm sure you won't.. you win... a virtual cookie xD

Ria is a sdcc catwoman who is my sdcc batgirl's twin. Because they look so much alike xD I've had her planned since before I got Cyanide (LQ) because they're sisters and I created all of these chracters because I wanted an LQ.. smoothhhhhhhhhhhh xD

I hate to say this but I really don't want to buy more pullips. Not that I don't like them but I have way too many already and I hate spending so much money on them because there are actually some other things I like to buy now ;_; Plus I'm 15.. I don't need a billion dolls lol BUT I WILL NOT GET RID OF MINE just had to make that clear xD

THis is the absolute minimum I need. Of course I want more (namely I really need a prupate and the rest of the RMs) but they're mostly sold out anyways so you know whenever an oppurtunity arises...BUT I NEED THESE THREE NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

i felt a need to whip out les grandes fusils. let me 'splain:

- thrifted creme cardi-shawl. this is so crazy awesome i just can't tell you. it's total art teacher/princess from the future/ dancer. it's beautifully crafted gorgous wool. it had some ungainly non-functioning pocket flaps that i took off at the first oppurtunity.

- thrifted blue bloues with quilted shoulder detailing, big billowing sleeves and general wonderfulness. i could wear this blouse and some old ratty boxers and look (or maybe just feel) totally chic.

- thrifted stretchy belt guy

- thrifted wool skirt. this is one of those subtle beauties that would be easy to pass by. it buttons up the side and has cleverly disguised slit pockets on either side.

- gray tabio tights

- newly thrifted naturlizer peep toe strappy dudes. perfect for making muffins with the whippersnapper and dreaming about warmer days.

i wonder if i'll ever have rooms that i never use, just keep pristine as an indication of stature and social rituals.

I normally joke about eating cheese with Guinness as I rarely combine the two. However, tonight I figured why not give the combination a try. Its pretty damn good… tasting that is. Im not sure yet how good it is for my body - Internally. We all know how it is for the outside. Just look at the before and after video for day 173!

Today I spent a good portion of the day chasing a forest fire that started with a lightning strike. 75 acres went up in flames sending billowing smoke several hundred feet high, chocking residents and forcing an evacuation. I was out on some crappy business thing and I saw the fire. Immediately I thought, stock footage oppurtunity. I now headed home to grab my camera. I figured I'd call my Mother since she would want the opportunity to get a story for her site. We headed out, following the smoke. We were met with slight opposition with cop after cop sending us away. They were attempting to get people away from danger while we were trying our best to get closer to it.

After several failed attempts at penetrating the road blocks we found a female officer that gave us the information we needed. All it took was a good looking man to get the other part of her brain working! Ok, so i'm lying! I was driving so I stayed in the car and let my mommy talk. I'm only 28, I have a lot of growing up to do!

The media was being let in a few blocks down. We drove down past residents out talking to one another. I could tell that for some of them this was the first time ever talking to their neighbors. Its odd that it takes a disaster to bring people together. We arrive at the final barricade before things get real thick. I start snapping shots of everything including the police cars. The whole time I thinking of what I could composite in front of this. The scene from American History X comes to mind. This is stock gold I think to myself! While shooting, a woman approaches us and asks who we are with. We let her know and then she invites us to ride along with her down to "ground zero" sometimes having media clearance kicks ass!

We hop in her SUV and with ease, roll past every barricade. About 10 blocks down smoke is thick and the area has been evacuated. We get out and walk straight back to the edge of what was less then amazing. It looked as if someone had a camp fire burning. The flames were no more than 2 feet tall. I get a better blaze in my backyard fire-pit. oddly enough, the smoke was thick and spread so high and far they closed both the turnpike and I-95 for 5 miles.

Ok, I'm drinking beer so I'm rambling. Its been pointed out that every blog that I've written while drinking beer is longer than ones sober. I'll try to reel it in and stay on topic.

Ok, so we get a first hand up close view of the fire. I had a business dinner at 6:30 and I smelled completely of camp fire. We went home and I quickly changed before Sushi! Mmm I love sushi!

After dinner I went home to relax for a few minutes before Joyce arrived. I figured since I didn't' get anything good enough for Day 175 at the fire I'd grab a shot of something before She got here. Unfortunately I misjudged how tired I was due to complete lack of sleep for the past 3 days. I passed out for an hour. The next thing I remember is the door bell ringing. Then Joyce walking in. oops, guess I lost track of the time.

I figured that since Joyce was here and I've not seen here for a few weeks that I'd grab a shot of her and call it a night. I did just that and was then off to Walmart to get ready for Cleatus and Lil Bobbi's appearance at the Redneck Circus. I've stained my beater with coffee and mustard. The wigs are ready and I've already started in with the beer. I am going at this event full bore.

Until then… drink beer and eat cheese - Michael

Wanted to do a simple shot today, but things just went great today.

I had a very nice phonecall with "Man met Bril" which left me humbled, proud and happy. Happy because I've met so many great people here on Flickr and they, and their pictures have become part of my daily life.

And Flickr keeps sending me great things.

Mr. Moog directed MacUser magazine to me to write a Photoshop tutorial on this image to be printed in their next issue.

How's that, I'm getting published, woohoo!!!!

Every tree tells a story, wether living or dead, and this was no exception. It is rare nature lover and artist who can pass an oppurtunity to capture something like this by.

The Murray Spartans take on the Cottonwood Colts in the 4A Championship

Volleyball is one of those sports you don't really have to shoot the whole match to get highlights, so it gave me an oppurtunity to shoot some photos until i had to pick up the video camera

Morning smoke, and camera oppurtunity.

Alexander Strider bodied Volvo B10B 509 N509HWY was and will remain one of my favourite buses to drive for a long long time. I had the oppurtunity to run her in to the depot on Wednesday and it was a brief pleasure, the sun was shining but was always wrong for a shot so yet another depot shot I am afraid. Not bad though?

509 was new for "Starbus" work at Keighley before transfer to Harrogate where she fitted in well alongside 504/508 and 510. After a couple of years they went to Blackburn for storage ( not low floor )

504 and 509 were converted into 3+2 seat belted school buses and came back to Harrogate for use on school work replacing two Javelins. 504 and 509 operate the 603 school bus to Rosset from Bilton. There are so many kids on 603 that both buses are full to capacity everyday..

I think 508 was sold on .....

510 ( another super bus ) sat at the back of Intack depot and spent 2 years dying a painful death before going to Barnsley to be put to sleep......
