The former municipal bus operator, Bury Corporation Transport, had been merged into the new South East Lancashire & North East Cheshire Passenger Transport Executive in 1969. The PTE, that included eleven municipal fleets, began a process of standardising fleets and operations across what had been a variety of undertakings.

One feature introduced was to re-number the many bus routes across the PTE area so as to avoid the duplication of service numbers; almost all of the former operators had, for example, a number 1. This was introduced in phased stages and on Sunday3 March 1974 it was Bury's turn to wake up to new bus route numbers. This is the small, laminated, double sided card that was issued and no doubt intended to fit into a purse or wallet as a reminder.

These numbers lasted through the Greater Manchester era and into privatisation when it was, effectively and largely lost. I see however in neighbouring Rochdale that the re-introduction of publically controlled bus routes, the Bee Network, has reverted to several of these SELNEC numberings.
