Dungeness nuclear power station comprises a pair of non-operational nuclear power stations located on the Dungeness headland in the south of Kent, England. Dungeness A is a legacy Magnox power station that was connected to the National Grid in 1965 and has reached the end of its life. Dungeness B is an advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) power station consisting of two 1,496 MWt reactors, which began operation in 1983 and 1985 respectively, and have been non-operational since 2018 with decommissioning beginning in 2021.
There were many problems during construction of the second power station, which was the first full-scale AGR. It was supposed to be completed in 1970, but the project collapsed in 1969. The CEGB took over project management and appointed British Nuclear Design and Construction (BNDC) as main contractor. There were more problems and by 1975 the CEGB was reporting that the power station would not be completed until 1977 and the cost had risen to £280 million. By completion the cost had risen to £685 million, four times the initial estimate in inflation-adjusted terms.
In March 2009, serious problems were found when Unit B21 was shut down for maintenance, and the reactor remained out of action for almost 18 months. In 2015, the plant was given a second ten-year life extension, taking the proposed closure date to 2028. In September 2018, both units were shut down and were expected to restart in December 2020. On 7 June 2021, EDF announced that Dungeness B would move into the defuelling phase with immediate effect.

HMM-- the theme for monday 3/15 is bells. this is actually part of a pencil topper and the teeny tiny operational bells are approximately 1/4 of an inch. yes, they do jingle
Battery Point Light, in Crescent City, was one of the first lighthouses on the California coast. Rugged mountains and unbridged rivers meant coastal travel was essential for the economic survival of this region. In 1855, Congress appropriated $15,000 for the construction of a lighthouse on the tiny islet, which is connected to Battery Point by an isthmus which is visible, and can be traversed on foot, at low tide. Although not included in the 1852 contract by the United States Lighthouse Service for the first eight west coast lighthouses, the Battery Point Lighthouse was actually lit ten days before the Humboldt Harbor Lighthouse, the last of the original eight to become operational. The fourth-order Fresnel lens was lit in 1856. The lighthouse was automated in 1953, and a modern 14.8-inch (375 mm) lens replaced the fourth-order Fresnel lens.
The mine was operational in the 1950's when pyrite deposits were found in the area of Kokkinopezoula in Mitsero. The mine stopped operating in 1967.
As the mine was abandoned, a large crater was left. The large crater fills with water during the winter months creating the lake. The water in the lake became red due to the high acid content and it did not allow any living organisms to develop.

... dive into the Tett turret and start firing skywards :-)
From what can still be seen around the perimeter of RAF Hornchurch, Tett turrets were glorified manholes, kept more or less dry and more or less protected by a rotating (when operational) concrete open top. They offered very limited protection against schrapnel and blast.
GB&W C424 (314) leads the northbound local from Plover over the WCL crossing at Wood Street (WCL depot/operating HQ in background.) This is another view showing the manual interlocking at the "west" (eventually the "north") end of the WC's Stevens Point yard. The dispatcher who controlled it sat in the office on the second floor at the opposite end of that building - known to some as WC's "galactic headquarters" to differentiate the operational HQ from the corporate one in Rosemont, Illinois. If a train departed from the yard (coming at the camera in this view) and encountered a red signal here, often the rulebook four blasts of the whistle would result in a cleared signal at "Stevens Point West", and such clear signal would be acknowledged properly with two short toots. If the DS wasn't occupied with urgent matters at his desk (and he/she often was as things got busier and busier), a turn and wave from the DS through the window confirmed the highball and the crew was on its way to join the fray on the mainline...or, as I often said in the spirit of Jethro Tull's song, "Bungle in the Jungle."
A crowd of locals await the morning arrival from Sirmattura at Dholpur Junction NG. The train is returning from a nearly 6 hours out and back journey and ZDM5 516 will take over from its classmate. The Dholpur diesel shed holds 5 ZDM5 class locomotives, of which atleast 4 are operational, more than enough to cover the daily services. 516 formerly worked the Murtijapur-Achalpur line and thus wears an different paint scheme from the rest of the Dholpur fleet.
Am operational on understanding a life or the art of photography of a photographer who would be living in an era where editing softwares wouldn't be on hand... and then, like the former era, he would have to carry out his drives till the shutter clicks.... although having abundance of exposures to the level infinity... Anyways, i am browsing my archives for the images i have worked hard on to get the way i imagined them to egress and deliver to you guys so that i can get the analysis on the actual image...
I have a very strong belief in light supporting your cause and aesthetics, hence, if coddled well, can produce charming results.... its a blessing to play with light and colours after the click.... but why not spend some more time and do it the right way already.... and if, one feels restricted or good enough to have learnt sufficiently, can always have the leverage to play accordingly afterwards....

From Oostkerke Castle you can best see how impressive Oostkerke's Saint Quinten's Church is! It makes the whitewashed cottages of the village seem even smaller.
In the 12th century Oostkerke was a large parish, so much so that 8 'assistant' churches were created in surrounding villages. This was a time when Bruges and many villages in the area were prosperous and had harbours, but in the 14th century the "Zwin" started silting up so traffic to the harbours became impossible.
In the heyday of Oostkerke there were several mills, now there is one operational windmill left.
These days Oostkerke has circa 600 inhabitants. I believe the church is so big because of the prosperous past of this now quiet village.
Oostkerke is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages of Flanders.
HMS Justice (W-140), a Royal Navy ship classified as a rescue tug, was built in the United States as U.S. Navy ATR-1-class rescue tug USS ATR-20. Never commissioned into the U.S. Navy, she was transferred to the Royal Navy under Lend-Lease at delivery. Returned to the U.S. after the end of World War II, she was redesignated BATR-20. Struck and sold for commercial service in 1946 and renamed Saint Christopher, she was abandoned and grounded in Ushuaia, Argentina.
Operational history
ATR-20 was laid down by Camden Shipbuilding & Marine Railway Co., Camden, Maine, 20 January 1943; launched 18 October 1943; sponsored by Miss Joy D. Creyk; transferred to the United Kingdom under lendlease 24 April 1944; and commissioned as HMS Justice at Boston, Massachusetts, the same day, Lt. J. S. Allison, RNR, in command.
During the remainder of World War II, Justice served as a rescue tug in the Royal Navy. She reportedly served at the Normandy invasion in June 1944.
Justice was returned to the U.S. Navy on 20 March 1946 and redesignated BATR-20. She was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 3 July 1946 and sold 3 October 1947 to Leopoldo Simoncini of Buenos Aires as the Costa Rican-flagged St. Christopher. In 1953 she was chartered for salvage operations in Beagle Channel on the sunken Hamburg South America Line ocean liner SS Monte Cervantes along with several Argentine Navy vessels.
After suffering engine trouble and rudder damage in 1954, she was laid up at Ushuaia, Argentina. She was beached and abandoned there in 1957, and, in 2004, had her remaining fuel oil removed.
St. Christopher is still grounded and abandoned at Ushuaia bay.

UP LDS53 splits the DRGW intermediates outside of Portland, Colorado with an ex-DRGW GP40-2 leading a work train and four cars for Holcim Cement next door. CTC appeared on the route over Tennessee Pass as early as the 1920s, and despite the spectacular demise of the line nearly three decades ago, CTC is still operational between Pueblo and Parkdale. Since most of the signal installations on the Tennessee Pass were looted over the years, this is one of the few places where one can find unmolested GRS Type D signals from the Rio Grande days.

As a member of the Strathspey Railway, I found myself being even more hands on operationally over the charter weekend than just radio calls and poster painting. This did mean I have come home happy that the photographers got some exceptional shots and the railway as had an ultimately successful weekend, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I was limited in what I managed myself and never found an opportunity to push myself artistically. The memory card has never looked more bare from a photo charter even considering the conditions, so apologies if what I've uploaded feels like it falls short of my usual style. However, I got a weekend of having a jolly with my good friends and this is no doubt part of their larger plan of getting me to expand my duties outside of charters! So don't feel sorry for me, I thoroughly enjoyed it all. I just felt it best to explain why the sudden change in style of my photographs or the lack of results.
So here's one of the few other shots from the weekend, Ivatt No. 46512 recreated a departure from Broomhill heading for Grantown Upon Spey.
Powerful men might sometimes appear less powerful for a variety of reasons, influenced by their behavior, demeanor, or choices in personal presentation.
Operational Strategy: In some cases, powerful men might use a low-key approach as a strategic move, whether in business, politics, or personal interactions. This can help them maneuver more freely and gather more honest reactions from others.

In the last minutes of the day's sunshine, 33111 heads away from Woodyhyde campsite with a demonstration freight from Swanage heading for Norden.
For the last few years the Swanage Railway has completed its operational year with a ‘winter warmup’ event, where the railway runs an intensive service using its own locomotive fleet over a weekend. This image was captured during the January 2024 event. The weather for the 2025 event in the first week of January was less kind, with no sunshine over the weekend.
Praid Salt Mine is located in Romania and is one of Europe's largest salt mines. It's also a popular tourist destination, offering health benefits due to its unique microclimate. The mine has layers of salt deposits formed over millions of years. It's been operational for centuries, and today, besides mining, it serves as a treatment center for respiratory issues.

The last operational class 483 EMU, 483006 sits at Ryde Pier on a wet afternoon. Yesterday's services were cancelled due to a flooded line, today's by ice / sleet causing electrical problems in the morning. When services did start late morning, with just one unit available only an hourly service could be provided.
The line closes on 4th January 2021 for several months to allow for the introduction of new units and much needed maintenance on the network..

The PS Waverley is the last seagoing passenger paddle steamer in the world. It was built in 1947 on the Clyde. Her working life came to an end in 1975 and then she was purchased for only £1 by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society. Since being an operational preservation steamer she has carried over 5 million passengers around the UK coast from 60 UK ports.

The Bundesanstalt Technisches Hilfswerk (THW, Federal Agency for Technical Relief) is a civil protection organisation controlled by the German federal government. 99% of its 79,543 members (2019) are volunteers.
The tasks of the THW are described in a law called THW-Gesetz. These tasks are:
technical and logistical support for other (German) GOs, NGOs or other authorities like fire brigades, police or the custom authorities
technical or humanitarian relief in foreign countries, as assigned by the government
technical relief in Germany as part of national civil protection measures.
Green Island Lighthouse is located on a small island off the northwest coast of Kennedy Town, Hong Kong Island, separated by the Sulphur Channel. Green Island is very small (about 10 hectares) and largely uninhabited. The lighthouse is still operational.
The buildings of the Green Island Lighthouse Compound were declared as monuments, In 2008. The historic buildings include the two lighthouses built in 1875 and 1905 and the European quarters of the lighthouse compound. These three buildings are individually Grade II historic buildings.
The first lighthouse, 12 metres (39 ft) tall and constructed of granite, began operation on 1 July 1875. There are two cross-shaped openings on its wall for ventilation and lighting. The openings resemble gun-posts like those found in medieval European castles. These are of the same construction as those found on the Cape Collinson Lighthouse at Siu Sai Wan, Hong Kong Island. It was later disused in 1905 because the building was too small to carry the lens from the Cape D'Aguilar Lighthouse.
Construction began on a second lighthouse in 1904, completed in 1905, which was originally intended to house the Cape D’Aguilar light. Built of granite and concrete, sitting beside its predecessor, the newer lighthouse is 17.5 metres (57 ft) tall, painted white, with a steel-caged lantern on top. A concrete spiral staircase with rails gives access to the lantern room. An upper floor was added to the keeper's house in 1923 and the lighthouse was automated in the 1970s. The two lighthouses, along with Cape D'Aguilar Lighthouse, Waglan Island Lighthouse and Tang Lung Chau Lighthouse (Kap Sing Lighthouse) are the only prewar lighthouses remaining.
