A good evening my fellow flickrites. Here's hoping you are all having a lovely end to your working weeks and are looking forward to a fine weekend. I snapped this on a Friday evening in late summer as I was crossing the street.

The Peking Opera
This opera is like nothing else in the world. This was my second visit to an authentic performance, but the first one in this grand palace of opera. I understand that it had been closed for a long time. I felt honored to be invited to attend the opening night performance of the Peking Opera.
The opera is mesmerizing and confusing event. I had a wonderful assistant with me, and she was able to translate the essence of the story to me. The plot was a classical tragedy told in dance and other-worldly sounding voices. Also I was very fortunate to have carte-blanche and was allowed to take photos anywhere. I used this as much as possible, trying not to make myself an annoyance.

The Opera House this time features 'Austral Flora Lights' by Andrew Thomas Huang, known for his work with FKA Twigs and Bjork, and BEMO. I prefer his work directly with humans... it's hard to get excited by plants!
The Opéra Garnier is one of the Paris National Opera's two home venues in the city. It was built from 1861 to 1875 on a commission of Napoleon III, along with the Place de l'Opéra on which the building stands, at the intersection of Boulevard des Capucines and Avenue de l'Opéra. Inaugurated as "le Nouvel opéra de Paris" (the New Paris Opera), the venue became known as the "Palais Garnier" within the first decades of its existence, acknowleding the plans and designs of its architect Charles Garnier. The Paris National Opera now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for ballet. The Palais Garnier also houses the Bibliothèque-Musée de l'Opéra de Paris (Paris Opera Library-Museum), although the Library-Museum is no longer managed by the Opera and is part of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
