Today's theme is shots from around Sydmney Harbour. Here a shot of the Sydney Opera House taken on a bleak morning while I waited for the sun to break through the clouds. It never happened, but when the world hands me lemons, I make lemoade; here is the result.

A man alone in misery sits

His dreams have all been smashed to bits

Abandoned by the one he loves

His heart as fragile as a doves

Alone he sits inside the waste

Of mirrors smashed to hide his face.....

I was walking along Rue Charlot in the third arrondisement of Paris when I stumbled upon a Sunday morning street market. As I turned the corner I encountered this man, surrounded by a crowd of people gathered to hear him sing Italian opera at Le Lutétia, a sidewalk cafe. He had an amazing voice and held his audience spellbound. I found a table, sat down, ordered myself a glass of French wine, while I watched in awe, as people spontaneously joined in on the familiar lyrics The crowd, presumably neighborhood friends, all gave him an overwhelming ovation, as he well deserved. I must say that this was one of my most memorable moments in Paris. Sometimes you just have to walk, walk and walk with no agenda because you'll never know what happy scenes you might encounter along the way.

I might add, parenthetically, that I have never encountered such a scene in any of my travels throughout Italy, a country I love. In fact, I rarely hear Italian opera, or any opera, being sung or played anywhere in Italy unless, of course, I’ve bought tickets to the opera. Unlike my travels to France, I only encounter pop American music while in Italy.

No trip to Australia would be complete without the stunning image of the Opera House from the water. The shape and form of this building (for a retired architect) are awesome.

The Queen Sofia Palace of the Arts,Opera House, Valencia at sunrise,

This was the last of the buildings constructed in the Arts and Sciences Park, opened in 2005 by Queen Sofia. Designed again by Santiago Calatrava, it is the tallest Opera House in the World with 14 stories, although from this level on the terrace the scale is hard to gauge.

You can't help thinking it looks like a Armoured Helmet from this angle, hence the title!

A trip to Vienna

All those who cannot take a holiday may follow me on a tour through Vienna. Past the famous sights, but perhaps you will also discover sights worth seeing off the beaten track …

The Vienna State Opera is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. The façades are in the Renaissance arch style, the two figures above the main façade portray two winged horses led by Harmony and the Muse of Poetry. It opened in May 1869 with Mozart's premiere of Don Giovanni.

The State Opera is also the venue for the Vienna Opera Ball, the highlight of the Viennese carnival ball season. It always takes place on the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday. For this purpose, the chairs of the parterre are dismantled and a floor is erected on scaffolding, creating a dance floor of 850 m² and transforming the opera house into a ballroom.
