Those who follow my work must at time feel I can't be "trusted" to work in just one style or one mode. All I can say is Guilty As Charged.
I enjoy working in so many different styles and on so many different subjects. People. Vehicles. Trains. Monuments. Abstracts. Wherever my eye turns it seems there's something to be explored.
Recently I saw three photogravure by one of the photo secession pictorialists. "Click" went the mind and suddenly I was creating yet another body of work in a different mode.
In my defense the best I can say is that I'm having one hell of a good time.
Borrowing from several themes, I thought it was time for me to delve deeper into a favorite subject; still life images from the late 1800's.
The themes that appeal to me include dark hand coated glass plate, Steampunk, Gothic, window light, distressed time worn materials, and a hint of Italian romanticism.
Strobist info -
Alien Bees B800 with 3x4foot soft box set to it's lowest power setting, 5 or more feet from the subject at a rather oblique angle, and a single large white reflector opposite the flash to fill the shadows.
Camera info -
Lens set to wide open for selective focus. I wanted to emulate early optical needs for gathering as much light as possible at the widest aperture available at the time. With these wee-DSLR's, depth of field tends to be too great. So this was something of an experiment to see what might be possible. The 50 f/1.8 II comes very close to meeting the need. If I had more room to move, I think the 100 f/2 would be outstanding wide open. I'm also exploring the use of Sigma's 20 and 28mm f/1.8 lenses wide open. Their design MTF data leads me to believe the center contrast should be quite good at f/1.8.
Processing info -
Heavy use of vignetting and texture layers in most cases. Also heavy use of different BW tints. Some from gum over palladium, others from platinum, and yet other tints taken from old early 1900's portraiture photos. All these were balanced and blended to taste.
I have stumbled upon something of incredible rarity. Images from across the gap between various Ages have, unexpected, become available to me. They have withstood the incredible stresses of Multiverse time sharing to be revealed here for perhaps the first time in this Post Modern Age.
Obligatory Strobist Info - Photonic Creations used one AB800 with SoftBox over center and slightly to the left, and AB1600 30 degrees to the left. Heavy post processing to taste.
After reviewing the results, I'm convinced I need to make 16x20 inch prints of these and hang them in a local gallery. My jaw still hits the floor when I see what I see here.

These were taken +/-2EV, three layers, through HDR, into Tone Maps, then sepia tones (sample colorized).
Canon 40D, either 10-22 EF-S or 17-40 L, Qtfsgui, Gimp, OSP, etc...
I was visiting the Henrichenburg boat lift museum in the hope to take some nice pictures of the spectacular historic boat lifting facility but somehow it didn't work out. At the end of our tour I was standing on top of the water playground and had a really good view on this coal plant.
Each time I work with the original images I find some new way to re-work them. Exploring possibilities is just too much fun! I'm hopeful that they'll look good in my hand bound books.

The mountains in the background are known as the Sleeping Ute.
You can make out what appears to be an outline of a body in a sleeping on the earth and from some angles you can even see the toes.
Taken at the Painted Hand Ruins site in the Canyon of the Ancients National Monument in Colorado, not too far from the Utah border.
This year I found a rather large crop of beautiful mushrooms growing under a pair of fairly young oak trees. The colors were outstanding and the groups of fruiting bodies nicely placed.
Last year I posted a number of mushroom images with words from Alice In Wonderland. I still feel those words apply.

A lone street light at the side of Lake Constance on a former harbour behind the palace of Friedrichshafen. The last sunlight was fading behind the Alps as I took this image before the difference of brightness of the artificial light and the blue sky was to high.
This is not so much a road in this image as it is the top of a dike that seems to be protecting the tracks to the right.
Tracks that seem to be for the most part buried as they run mostly parallel to HWY 60 up near Superior.
Lots of cows around this area.
I was toying around with a small UV light because I've read that some fungi are fluorescent. These (normally yellow) mushrooms started to glow green. This is not one of my better photos but I wanted to share nevertheless.
My first pano ever, used Hugin and then gimp to blend some rough spots.
I will have to give this a few more tries now that I see the problems that arise.
While blending I had the right hand side out of view. Thinking I had the image set to fit in window I thought I had finished only to realize the right hand side was totally different from the rest.
I will replace this once I get the hang of it.
I used five images to get this but I think I could have done better only using three.
