When I was at boarding school I took these photos of one of my best friends for my art class. We pretended she was drowning in the pool.
About 8 acres of a 43 acre parcel of land was developed for the 28 homes and other facilities which make up our little village. The remaining land has been left as open space, natural desert, to preserve the land. A major wash runs through part of that land, which sits below the area you see in the photo. The space you see here was to be a fruit tree orchard... We collect the liquid waste (black water and grey water) from all our homes and instead of sending it off to a city sewage plant we recycle it by cleaning it through constructed wetlands. After the bacteria in the wetlands cells remove the toxins, the effluent water is sent, by underground pipes, back into the interior of the community to water the trees and other plants, The orchard was supposed to be a part of that system but the calculations were off. The people living here use less water than what was normally used when the project began; the figures used to calculate how much water we would have in the wetlands to reuse were not correct so the orchard plan had to be cancelled. There was not enough effluent water to support an orchard. Instead, we grow the food forest, which has been woven into the landscape in front of our homes, in the Permaculture designed basins. Now, the land once reserved for the orchard, is a beautiful open space where a labyrinth was added and we can gather and enjoy the views to mountains in the distance and the vast sky which is a striking element found in our beautiful desert.
