Open Streets Minneapolis temporarily closes major thoroughfares to car traffic and opens them up for walking, biking, skating, and other active transportation. One goal is giving Minneapolis residents an opportunity to rethink streets as public space. On this day several connected streets in northeast Minneapolis were closed from 11am to 5pm.

"Open to Everyone" - this may be left over from when this originally opened as Gov-Mart/Baza'r foods in 1964; the membership requirement was dropped at the time of the grand reopening.
My LDD work in progress, restarted after about a year or so of it just being the engines. I guess it was the whole Cuusoo thing with the Lego RIfter that got me motivated once again.
The new boarding ramp... origionally it was just a plank. This actually folds longer.
I stumbled upon this open cluster while thumbing through Sky Safari and thought I would image it, given that a) this cluster is a bit obscure and b) the Moon was up, making it a good open cluster imaging night. There are various descriptions of this cluster online, but none of them mentioned the distinct "S" shape I see within it. The "S" is on its side in this photo, but I would say that it is very distinct. Could this be called the "S" cluster?
NGC2281 is in the constellation Auriga, about midway between Castor and Menkalinan (the other "top" star in Auriga, next to Capella). It is pretty close to the plane of the Milky Way, putting it in a star-rich area of the sky, and is about 1800 light years away.
This is a great cluster visually in my 80 mm scope... its members are bright pinpoints, gleaming like tiny diamonds in the eyepiece. I highly suggest giving this cluster a look visually.

This image was created from 57 one-minute exposures. Unbelievably, I didn't have to throw away any of the subs I took... the autoguider, satellites, and airplanes all were cooperating nicely during this session. After the usual round of processing I threw in a hint of star spikes to give this image a little pizzazz.
Another gift made for my mum - a passport wallet. She is coming with me to Japan next month. I used a lot of Echino fabric in this, & will comment next time to use thinner interfacing for the home deco weight fabrics, as it was hard to sew through. Great design!
November marks the beginning of open season on Dungeness crab in San Francisco and coastal waters from southern California to the Aleutians. There are important crab fishing landings in nearly every fishing port north of Santa Barbara but San Franciscans who know will almost always tell you that the crab caught locally is a little bit sweeter than the crab from Oregon and Washington. This season (2009-10), locally-caught crab appear to be relatively puny (most no more than a couple pounds) but, after last years disastrous season, their mere presence is of great consolation. One major consequence of size this season is that larger boats from Oregon and Washington, typically working on behalf of major food processors, have stayed away leaving the catch to local fisherman.
