The Spirit of Youth (SOY) programme hosted its cohort of facilitators over the weekend of the 26th – 27th January 2013 here on the GIBS campus. The purpose of the training was to equip the group of facilitators with the tools and insights required to guide the 150 plus learners who participate in the annual SOY programme. As SOY is a youth focused leadership development programme, the training was constructed in two parts; an experiential excursion filled day on the Saturday and a facilitation skills workshop on the Sunday to create the right context for understanding how young people engage with the world balanced with the appropriate facilitation methods to guide the learners through their work on SOY. On the Saturday, through “a walk in their shoes” type excursion at The Zone of Rosebank, then a short trip to Alexandra Township to hear first-hand of the experiences of child headed households and a final stop in the south of Jo’burg to learn of the devastating impacts of teenage trafficking and child prostitution; the group were exposed to experiences that sensitised them to the diverse socio-economic realities young people are faced with in South Africa. While on the Sunday, a systematic approach to facilitation was delivered in the form of a workshop. The group worked through various scenarios of how to effectively engage with young people and were subject to several impromptu assessments on the day.

The practice of reading on screen differs from reading from paper. Anecdotally we are more likely to be distracted on screen and find it more comfortable to concentrate when reading on paper. However this is in part due to a lack of digital reading skills which the Reading On Screen support site can address.

Staff and volunteers at Harding Middle School distribute grade level workbooks along with free meals to students as schools are closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the recent announcement that DMPS will complete the 2019-20 school year through distance learning, staff has been handing out workbooks containing lessons consistent with the different subjects students would be working on during normal school hours. New workbooks are scheduled to be distributed every Monday at meal distribution sites.

Web-based tools and mobile apps exist to mimic paper and pen practice. Highlighting and 'post-it' notes can be added to digital documents such as Word Docs and PDFs to annotate and comment. The benefit of digital annotation comes from the ability to search and quickly navigate through annotated or highlighted passages.
