Last week we sent a bunch of Scout Books to SXSW in Texas with @rohdesign and @austinkleon for their Visual Notetaking 101 Panel.

These guys take awesome notes, and they designed this pocket notebook to offer you a chance to create beautifully illustrated notes, too. The cover features illustration exercises for better notetaking.

Count yourself lucky if you were at the panel and received one of these! They ran out right away! Collectors item.

I was passing through Allan Gardens park in downtown Toronto, the park where I have been very successful in meeting several of my recent Strangers for the project. I was not particularly intent on meeting a Stranger because I had met two yesterday and three yesterday so I didn’t fear getting “rusty” or losing my courage. I met this woman sitting on her electric bike in the park and spontaneously asked her about it and how she liked it. She told me she’d had it for a year and loved it. It cost less than $900 and she can ride it for about six hours between charges. Charging with an electric cord is very simple. We agreed it seemed like a great vehicle to own and she said it was the wave of the future.

I proceeded to a park bench to sit down and change lenses on my camera and told myself that if she was still there when I got my “stranger lens” (50 mm f/1.8) mounted, I would walk over and invite her into the project. She was still there and told her I thought she would make a good subject for my 100 Strangers project because I thought she had a nice face that would photograph well and I like photos with a story and thought her electric bike would give the photo an interesting message. She was immediately comfortable with the idea and I suggested we move over to a grassy area where I could simplify the background which included bright white gravel paths, tree trunks, and a “horizon” with cars and streetcars.

I introduced myself and we shook hands. Meet Heather. I was lucky that Heather’s glasses didn’t seem to be reflecting too badly so even though she offered to remove them, I said it was ok to just leave them on. I intended to have her remove them for some later photos but promptly forgot. After taking a few photos from slightly different angles I was pleased with the quality of the light. The sky had rather quickly shifted from bright morning sun to fairly bright overcast which was filtered by surrounding trees and the green grass. Because she was so cooperative and patient, I explained that I was trying to do some experimenting with my new reflector and brought it out. She helped me hold it for several photos and I think this one was with the gold surface which added a bit of warmth to the somewhat cool cloudy light. I wish I had remembered to have her remove her glasses for a few photos but it seems I always forget at least one thing when doing my photos. The other thing I forgot was to shift my metering mode but it didn’t seem to have a negative impact. I had it on evaluative metering and usually use spot or center-weighted averaging for my Stranger portraits.

Heather was a really pleasant woman. Born in Calgary on the shoulder of the Canadian Rockies to parents of Scottish ancestry, the family moved to Toronto when Heather was a young child and she has lived here ever since. “I grew up in this neighbourhood and used to play in the playground just over there” (gesturing). “I still come here all the time and live just two blocks away. I thought I was going to be a photographer too but somehow I wound up in offset printing.” She worked until age 50 when she was diagnosed with liver cancer and underwent treatment which proved successful. She has passed the 5 year point in good health and explained that this is generally regarded as a cure in cancer treatment. She feels fortunate for her health and said she “cleaned up” her lifestyle when diagnosed and feels much better than she did even prior to her cancer diagnosis.

I told Heather that I had visited Scotland a few years ago on a vacation and loved the beautiful country and that the people were very friendly. Heather said she would love to see Scotland but her pension doesn’t leave her with much extra in the way of funds but that maybe she would win the lottery one day and go!

We talked about the 100 Strangers project and Heather said she is a “people person” who enjoys meeting new people and we agreed that this project brings people together in a positive way. I liked the slightly animated expression in the main photo but I like the more serious one (second comment photo) too and I wound up changing the main photo to the more serious one which may make Mim's comments seem a bit confusing as they were made before I did the switch.

It started spitting rain at that point and we both decided we should head for home after having had a most pleasant encounter so I gave her my contact card and we said goodbye.

Thank you Heather, for the delightful chat and for being so patient while I worked at perfecting my camera technique. You are both friendly and courageous and I’m glad you survived your health crisis and used it to improve your quality of life. You are now Stranger #121/200 in Round 2 of my project.

What’s a more appropriate promotional tool for illustrators than a pocket notebook? Maybe a pencil?

The fine folks at the Maryland Institute College of Art created these Scout Books to promote their new MFA in Illustration Practice to launch in Fall 2011. Whitney Sherman is spearheading the new program, and is responsible for the concepting and design of these books. Jen Mussari is a recent graduate of the Illustration Department at MICA and it’s her illustration work that graces the cover of these pocket notebooks.

Luke Ramsey is awesome. He creates beautiful, intricate pieces of artwork that include zines, murals, paintings and prints. He also runs Islands Fold, an independent publisher and artist residency in B.C., Canada.

We ran into Luke last summer at the Portland Zine Symposium, and saw him sketching in a Scout Book! Quickly gave him another, and within weeks he had filled it up and sent us images. At long last, here is what the fantastic Luke Ramsey did with the 32 grid pages of a Scout Book.

Awesome! Thanks, Luke.

On the wall...(hope it will stick).

The size is 120x90 cm.

I used an online service for this, intended for family-photos etc. To be honest the colours are a bit drab. Who knows how many photos they process until they refresh their chemicals. Offset printing would be better. But it's not too bad and at least the paper quality is good :S

Knights of Pythias Castle Hall

315 Main - 1901; restored - 1981 (NR, RTHL)

This replica of a medieval civic building is one of the architectural jewels of Sundance Square. It was designed by Sanguinet & Staats and built by William Bryce. Bryce served as Mayor of Fort Worth. The first Knights of Pythias Castle Hall ever built was constructed on this site in 1881, and it burned in 1901. Later that year, the building was rebuilt from the ruins and the design was altered somewhat by the addition of the gabled roof and the turret on the corner. The building was also the site of the first offset printing press and the first washeteria. In 1981, when the building was restored, a replica of the original knight (cast in 1882) was placed on the building. Thomas E. Woodward & Associates were the architects and Thos. S. Byrne was the contractor for the restoration. The principal tenant is Haltom's Jewelers.

“These words shaped history. They belong to you. Know them.”

This Scout Book is the synthesis of many of the things we get very excited about: metallic inks, historical documents, recycled paper, democracy…the list goes on.

Scout Books is proud to introduce a pocket-sized edition of the Constitution of the United States of America. Containing the Preamble, the seven Articles and the twenty-seven Amendments, this tiny book packs the content into 32 pages and is wrapped in a two-color chipboard cover printed in black and metallic gold inks. Typeset in the oh-so-legible Gotham font by Hoefler & Frere-Jones, this little guy is a contemporary update on a crucial text that aims to make the supreme law of the land more accessible. The front cover boasts Museo Slab, designed by the talented Jos Buivenga.
