While searching google maps, I found a rock clearing in the woods that appeared to have a good view of Morton Bay and Whitefish Lake looking west, which would also be ideal for sunsets, but once I started wandering the real world and lost my birds eye view that google provides, I found it tricky to find what I was looking for. (this was before I discovered offline maps for my phone, which takes all the guess work out of it)

I did find a rock clearing, but it wasn't the spot I was looking for, and the view of the water was mostly obscured by trees. After checking the map once I got home, I found out that I was just a few hundred meters from the place I was searching for.

The sunset wasn't very good, but just as the sun hit the horizon, a break in the clouds let the sunlight through, briefly illuminating the foreground. I quickly changed my camera settings, and hoped the clouds would catch some color, but that didn't happen. I had to rush back to get out of the woods before dark because I forgot my flashlight, and I made it back just in time.

I didn't get the sunset I was hoping for, but I had a great time exploring a new place.

2 Miles to go!

- - -

Stone and I have talked about BIKEpacking for the last four years, but have done nothing but talked about it until this week. We are now "bikepackers". Will we do it again? The jury is still out on that, although there there were some good lessons learned here. Since my Brother-in-law, Jeff Woods was in town, Stone and I twisted his arm into going with us too.

Day One:

Started 7 miles west of Highway 89 at Webber Lake (A small private lake on the Jackson Meadows Highway). Since Mena and Claire were going to Girls camp for the week, the boys decided to camp too. I staged my car at Cisco Grove, and she dropped us off on her way to Treasure Mountain. That way we were totally committed with NO BACKING OUT.

We rode 13 miles to White Rock lake, all up hill. White Rock L. sits at 7800' so our bodies we're pretty exhausted by the time we rolled in at 4:30p. The mosquitoes were awful. We found a brief respite on the dam. For some reason very few mosquitoes could find us there. The vistas were lovely, but we found ourselves pretty miserable with all the moving around, waving off the incoming mosquito attacks. This would not change until 8 miles from Cisco Grove.

We had the lake to ourselves after about 7:30pm and no one in the camp area except us--try to do that car camping in California during the summer! It cooled off into the forties overnight. Sleep eludes me while lying on the ground. Arm goes numb, wake up, turn over, other arm goes numb, wake up, turn over, repeat--All night long. Very evident in this picture.

Day Two:

Breakfast on the dam, mosquitoes out in force again. Packed up and hit the Mount Lola trail-The only ride-able single track on the whole 30 mile adventure :(

For me this was the highlight of the day. Totally enjoyed that short lived portion. Then we pushed up a ridge and dropped down into Paradise Valley, picked up a four-wheel drive road which lead to a couple of cabins way out in the outback. We found ourselves behind a locked gate with "No Trespassing" signs all over it which seems odd since all the maps I had with me had the road labeled as a forest service road. We ducked underneath and after a few more miles, another locked gate on the same forest service road? If anyone can fill me in on how Forest Service Road 85-21 can have No Trespassing signs, I'd like to know. Unless it's the cabin owners placing the signs to discourage visitors?

Every stop until Magnolia Summit was mosquito infested--We enjoyed lunch there; mosquito-free. We took few breaks, pedaled on and out Magnolia/Rattlesnake road (Depending on what map you look at). We didn't take our intended route of going northwest near Fordyce lake. It appears the road there was behind yet another locked "no trespassing" gate near something called "Magnolia Camp". Plus, the mosquitoes made everything miserable. We just pushed through south of Fordyce and picked up the Fordyce road southwest of Lake Sterling down to Cisco Grove.

No mechanicals or flats! All told, Google maps says this was 30 miles. I think that's a pretty conservative count, it felt like more, and I think the distance calculations I performed didn't include all the switchbacks and such. I'm proud of Stone, he kept up even though he hadn't been out riding. Looks like Lacrosse and the Gym paid off though! We knew we were going to be in for some hard miles, and everyone kept their spirits up. Everyone was positive about the trip, and even more positive to be off the bike at the end!

Lessons Learned:

1. There's a reason people spend good money on frame packs and under seat bags, the weight from a pack on your back puts extraordinary pressure on your sit bones and makes for a very uncomfortable ride. I don't think I could do a third day with that kind of pain or producing physical saddle sores. Today my sit bones and lower back are paying dearly for that lesson!

2. Multiple Map sources and compass. I had two paper maps (One Tahoe Natl' Forest map, and one topo map.) I also downloaded some offline maps to an android phone and used Oruxmaps which proved to be extremely valuable. I turned on the GPS, and Oruxmaps would show me exactly where I was on the offline map. However, there were fewer roads shown on the offline map as shown on the topo map. Using a mixture of the topo and Oruxmaps proved to be the right mix. Especially since I saw a total of 4 signs marking the forest service roads. Literally no signage past the main dirt roads.

Number of people seen:

I like getting out in the "wilderness", but I always make a mental note of how many people I see.

Day 1:

8 people

Day 2:

10 people

A total of 3 of those 18 people were actually hikers (2) and runners(1) the rest were in motorized vehicles. Had this been a weekend, I could probably triple that number or more.

This Nokia 700 smartphone with the Nokia Belle (Symbian) operating system has replaced my Nokia 6110 Navigator since the end of november 2011.

It also has built-in navigation hardware and the entirely free Nokia Maps software, complete with offline maps. Using a smartphone for navigation purposes remains a perfect solution while driving a motorcycle, and this Nokia does a great job. Not only navigating by the way, it has all features and possibilities you could wish for in a smartphone, and for a small price!

(location info has been blurred in the photo for obvious reasons of privacy)

This is my second attempt at finding a location in the woods that I first scouted out on google maps, but this time I had the help of my phone, gps, and an offline map that I downloaded before leaving the house. (since there's no reception out here)

This is composite of 9 photos of myself wandering around the rock clearing I found on google maps, which looked like it would have a good view of Whitefish Lake and Morton Bay. (that will be my next posts)

It was cool to see the large pieces of rock on top of the relatively smooth rock outcrop, which were likely placed there from the glaciers that passed though this area long ago. (those glaciers also smoothed the rock underneath them)

These seemingly out of place rocks are usually called glacial erratics, because they were transported by glaciers that have since melted, but I'm not sure if these rocks are considered glacial erratics (according to Wikipedia) because they're not sitting on a different kind of rock. (though I believe this type of granite is what most of the Canadian shield is made of, and that spans a huge area, so who knows how far they've travelled)

No matter how you choose to travel, HERE Maps shows you the smartest way across town with fast and offline maps which lets find your way even in areas with no signal.

Download the app on your Nokia Lumia 520.

You can see our route in blue. I actually switched on the GPS just before we got to the car park. The Anquet App transforms the tablet into a GPS with offline maps - although you have to purchase the maps of course, but the price has come down hugely in the last year.

Allwch chi weld lle aethon ni mewn glas. Nes i droi'r GPS ymlaen jest cyn cyrraedd y maes parcio. Mae App Anquet yn troi'r tabled yn GPS gyda mapiau y gellir eu gweld trwy'r amser - er bod eisiau prynu'r mapiau, wrth gwrs. Ond mae pris y rhain wedi dod i lawr yn sydyn yn y flwyddyn diwethaf.

Yn ol Cymdeithas Eryri, y daith o Gwm Cywarch i Aran Fawddwy ydi cyfrinach gorau Eryri. Dwi'n cytuno. Diolch i Hedd Pugh, tirfeddiannwr lleol, sydd wedi sefydlu maes parcio arbennig ym Mlaencywarch (wrth gyfeirnod grid SH 852 188). Mae hwn yn rhad ac am ddim, ond gofynnir i'r rhai sy'n ei ddefnyddio gyfrannau at Ambiwlans Awyr Cymru. Codwyd rhai miloedd o bunnau'n barod, a'i roi i'r elusen. Rhagor am y daith gerddeg bendigedig hon yma: www.snowdonia-society.org.uk/news.php?n_id=40&lang=cym

According to the Snowdonia Society, Cwm Cywarch and the walk up to Aran Fawddwy is the best kept secret of Snowdonia. I would agree. Thanks to Hedd Pugh, a local landowner, a special car park has now been established at Blaen Cywarch, at grid reference SH 852 188. This is free but users are encouraged to make a donation towards the Wales Air Ambulance. So far, several thousand pounds have been raised and donated. More about this amazing walk here: www.snowdonia-society.org.uk/news.php?n_id=40&lang=eng

5. London Offline Map & Guide Triomatic App (also available in many other cities) - Fantastic app that shows where all the major tourist sights are in relation to were you are. Lists hours and price!

6. Must have the local tube, rail, subway, or metro App - Must have! Easy to use - show which stations to change at to get to your location on time.

My honest feeling is that Herz NeverLost is useless. It's really hard to get to the destination without losing my way.

Now, I have an offline map in my smart phone. What I need is WiFi because I missed a chance to purchase a prepaid SIM card. Lucky I got free WiFi signal around MIT, then connected to the Internet, and searched a way to my hotel. Once the route is defined, we don't need WiFi anymore. Google Navi started navigating me to the hotel with GPS only (no WiFi).

I needed a place to fix my small phone, but the surface of dashboard is not smooth enough. Yes, it's time to utilize NeverLost. You know, the screen is smooth.

So, NeverLost is no more useless. It's useful to fix my smart phone and I had a comfortable Navi drive to the hotel.

#GoogleMap #upgrades to #Offline search and Directions

#Google #Maps is a #desktop and #mobile #application #web mapping service. It offers #satellite imagery, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets, real-time traffic conditions and a route plan who travel by foot, car, bicycle or public transportation.

For all #Android users, we have got another reason to #celebrate..!! yes, Google has upgraded its #Android Maps. It gets #offline #search and #direction and it also lets devices find #businesses, #Location, Opening hours and Telephone numbers while offline

If you wish to make use of this feature you may have to do is to tell the app to "download this area" you select. Once the #information has been installed, the app is designed to switch "Flawlessly" between #offline and #online modes

The offline map will robotically bring data up to date once in every 15 days to stay present so long as the handset is plugged into a charger and linked to #wifi, unless the user overrule these limitations.

This upgrade is available only in Android devices and soon it s it intends to bring the upgrade to Apple's iOS devices soon

Although my cellphone's GPS will work even without cellular service, it will be pointless without a map first downloaded to the phone. Gaia makes it very easy to download and recall such maps for backcountry use.

We saw a sign that led to the Big Cedar Tree. we were discussing whether this is the same Big Cedar Tree on the other side of the 101. I commented that the only way to find out is to check it out ourselves.

The road went more and more remote, and there was no clear sign where we should head to. Thankfully my Google offline map took us to the spot. It was really in the middle of nowhere. And it was swamped with misquotes. The Cedar Tree was pretty big alright. But we weren’t sure if that’s the same cedar tree we saw the year before because we were in a hurry to escape from the misquotes.

Later I checked the GPS and confirmed this is a different Big Cedar Tree.

On the Android version of Google Maps, you can now go the the Labs page and enable offline maps, then select an area and download everything within a 10 mile radius.

I used it in Mysore when my driver (from Bangalore) got lost! I was on roaming, but I could still use GPS with my pre-downloaded map of Mysore to guide him to the Devaraja Market, all without using data roaming. :)

(Disclaimer: I work for Google, but I didn't work on this feature.)

My new phone has some cool new features, including true offline maps and directions.

My smartphone over an RTL SDR tapping off the airplane's transponder, 485061. Of course, Flightradar 24 and similar do this much nicer, but this is something fun to do offline. www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/hv686/#619845a

The app used is Avare ADSB, which sadly won't use an offline map or export the current location to, say, Osmand
