Hunting for fall colors for the past several weeks, flight travel to Rocky Mountains was cancelled due to COVID, driving to remote rural area (the places where could be reached by car, no quarantine requirement...) for over 10,000km within three weeks, but in two trips... Truly remote, no COVID, few people, driving couple of hundred kilometers without seeing any villages... From Google offline map (no cell signal), showing unorganized area... The scenery was not as famous as Rocky Mountains, but people are nice (if meeting anyone in distance), scenery is rural and untouched nature... Most places I might visit once in life... I shared some of them, not so welcomed like Rocky Mountains, I understood, I already tried my best ;)) I may hold my fresh photos for a while... I have to dig out my fall capture of Rocky Mountains from last year, to post in-between... ;)) The big benefit of these two trips is not just photography itself, it is kind of changing environment mentally and physically and back to work at hospital as healthcare worker healthily ;))

Flu season is coming, second waves... Be smart, be safe, be well!

Have a healthy and happy weekend my dear Flickr friends!

Driving to Alstrom Point was kind of in the middle of nowhere. This drive was the most memorable drive of my entire trip! Remote, Unforgettable, Beautiful, Indescribable …Be sure having google offline map, no cell service. For the most part, the road is not maintained, so you're lucky to have 20mph for the trip. However, the entire road there was so beautiful and unique! The landscape on the ride there was other-worldly, with numerous stops worth photographing. There’s no trace of a human presence, no animals, nothing except desert. One and half hours driving in a twisted unpaved one way road, 21km road, the scenery along the road was like driving through Mars, the Moon, then back on Earth…

After taking sunset photo at the McWay Waterfall in Julia Burns State Park, wanted to check how to get to Pfeiffer Beach for the next early morning sunrise, having seen no real signs or roads, we pulled into Pfeiffer State Park and asked them where the beach was located. The ranger told us, passing Big Sur Station, turn first right at Sycamore Canyon Road.

Getting there was part of the adventure, just south of Big Sur Station on Highway 1 there is unsigned Sycamore Canyon Road which winds its way down to the shore. The two-mile long road is twisty and narrow, so RV’s and trailers are not allowed. The road is narrow and bumpy, not easy driving in the dark early morning. Very slow driving following google map (offline map, no cell signals in Big Sur). Arriving at the empty parking lot with no car, no people… head lights on, walked down to the beach.

One rock has a rock arch in it known as the Keyhole Arch, the large rock that is a staple of Pfeiffer State Beach. This amazing natural arch allows waves, and even the last rays of daylight, to pass through it. I could not find the hole at the beginning, too dark, just used manual focus on the big rock, took couple of photos while listening the waves hitting the rocks. When the early morning light shinning on the rocks, saw this hole and purple sand along the winding creek.

After our fist week in New Zealand, we arrived in Wellington where we spent an afternoon before we took the Ferry across the Cook Strait to the South Island the next morning. A friend of mine “warned” me that this crossing can be a little uncomfortable as there are typically strong winds, but in our case the weather was mild (in contrast to the night before in Wellington, where I woke up due to the wind slightly swaying the car) and we arrived in Picton after an 3 and a half hours ride. Fortunately, we were on time since we had most of our planned journey for that day still ahead of us: a drive to the northernmost point of the South Island. If Google Maps was right, the calculated route that looked not so dramatically long on the map should take us almost 5 hours, meaning that we should arrive at the campsite 45 minutes before sunset. So we fuelled up our car in Picton and started the journey, driving along one of the windiest roads I’ve ever driven, and all that with the longest vehicle I’ve ever driven. The narrow and windy roads made it feel like I was speeding, but I was always within the speed limits, trying not to waste any minute. In fact, I drove all the way without a single break, even though we would have loved to stop multiple times, especially at the Abel Tasman National Park which we read should be incredibly beautiful. The further north we got, the less civilisation there was, and on the last few kilometres, the road turned into a gravel road. In wise anticipation, we also downloaded the offline maps for this area, and as expected the Wifi in our mobile home indeed lost its signal.

To our surprise, we arrived at the campsite in time and seeing that there is nothing else than a farm and a cafe that was closed, we were even more surprised that there was a campsite in the middle of nowhere. We then quickly checked in (and were informed that there is a power limitation since this is basically the end of the power line), parked our camper and hurried to get to the beach. Fortunately, the path was easy to find and very beautiful as one walks past some very characterful trees that were formed by strong winds, looking constantly at the beautifully rolling green hills with lots of sheep before the path goes down through a small forest to the actual beach. At the entrance to Wharariki beach, you see some huge sea stacks in the distance and I was wondering if these are already the famous Archway Islands (at this point you only see it from the side from which the arches are not visible) that everyone knows that once had a Windows computer. We then walked further down the beach and noticed two people taking images of themselves and at this point it was clear: these must be the famous Archway Islands. We then hurried to get down there, set up everything and were right in time for catching the last sun rays, but I do have to admit that the following blue hour was even more beautiful and I might upload one of these blue hour images one day. However, it was not until the next morning that I took my favourite image from that location.

The next morning, we got up and hiked to the beach again to shoot sunrise, but on our way it turned out that the sun was rising exactly opposite to the Archway Island. Nevertheless, we set up our tripods, started shooting and waited till the tide rose. Since the few clouds in the sky didn’t really catch much color, I put on my 10 stop filter and waited for some bigger waves that got further onto the beach, and together with a 60 seconds exposure I was able to capture this beautiful and dreamy composition. Moreover, since the wave didn’t fully reach us, there are still some structures in the foreground that nicely serve as leading lines towards the Archway Islands. All in all, I’m really happy with this image and will never forget the short time we were able to spend at this incredibly beautiful and remote place. In fact, we read that it’s a shame that one drives up there only for visiting Wharariki beach and doesn’t explore the Farewell Spit and the whole Golden Bay, but there is always more to explore, isn’t it? I hope you like this image!

The Greig-French-Bell loop trail is a hike in the redwood forests of Northern California that I try to photograph every time we visit the location. And there are some excellent reasons for my persistence with the trail. First, it’s stunning. The redwoods here are new growth, so a lot of sunlight peeks through the forest canopy limiting the number of ferns and an incredible forest floor carpeted by clovers. Secondly, the trail path here is beneficial. Its red pops against the green of the plants, and it is easy to use as a leading line.

And lastly, it has become a personal challenge because the last two times I tried to hike this trail, I got hopelessly lost and mainly walked around in circles right around the trailhead area. So this time, I was prepared, I downloaded an offline map on my alltrails app, and we could finally navigate the dense maze of paths in the forest. The hike turned out marvelous, and I got quite a few good images.

Like many landscape photographers I use offline-map tools on my smartphone to coordinate all spots I want to visit. I use pretty informative and totally death-proof keywords like "awesome waterfall" or "cave, we probably gonna die in" (Copyright Timo Zilz :-)

So, as we are driving along the nr. 1 route in southwest iceland I saw a "possible nice photospot" on my map-app called "Fjaðrárgljúfur". What could that be?

Long worthwhile story inbound. Two days ago I went hiking up to this beautiful alpine lake. We shot photos until sunset and hiked out in the dark with headlamps. After 1.5 hours of descending down the steep trail, the trail goes two directions. The main trail curves to the right, crosses a bridge and heads back to the car. The second trail is a horse trail that crosses over a really fast freezing river. The bridge Is the only safe way across the river back to the car. Once you cross the bridge it’s another 1.5 miles to the car. We crossed the bridge. 10 minutes down the trail, out of nowhere we hear someone yell in the darkness from across the river. I answer back but we can’t hear what the person is saying. I decide to investigate further and hike off the trail towards the river. At the river bank I can see a dim phone light across the river 100 yards or so up on a hill. I yell to the voice to climb down to the river. It takes the guy a few minutes to climb down with his dim light. The river is raging so it’s very difficult to hear what he’s saying, finally I see him, it’s a young guy who we had seen hiking earlier. He yells “I’m lost! I need help!” My friend James joined me on the rescue mission. Upriver we find a large fallen tree that is crossing the entire river. James climbs out across the raging river and helps the lost stranger onto the log. He crawls across the log, across to us to safety. It was a bit tense, and I was positioned on a boulder in a place to help him see with my headlamp and to grab him in case he fell into the water. We ask him what happened. He missed the turn to the bridge, followed the horse trail to the dead end, and panicked. He decided to follow the river instead of backtracking. His phone was his only flashlight and it was at 20% battery, so he turned it off to conserve power and tried to walk in the dark. Because of that mistake, he fell into the freezing river, and got soaked up to his torso. After falling he continued down the river hoping to find the bridge. Unfortunately for him, he would have A: Eventually walked off a cliff or into the raging river. Or B: got stranded outside for the entire night when his phone died minutes later. He was soaking wet, surrounded by snow and it was already under freezing outside. It was only 9pm, His chances of being stranded, getting hypothermia and freezing to death were very probable if not certain! We were the last group hiking down the mountain. If we had not decided to investigate the yelling, he would have most likely died of hypothermia. I can’t believe it happens but, we literally saved a strangers life! Being in the wilderness is incredible and beautiful but is not to be underestimated. I thought after this long story I could leave some top tips that could save your life! Tip 1. If you lose the trail. Stop. Backtrack. Don’t assume you’ll run into the trail. Tip 2. Bring headlamps and extra batteries. Tip 3. Tell someone where you’ll be. Tip 4. Over prepare with food, clothes, water, lighter, pocket knife, rope. Tip 5, Don't panic, or do anything rash. Calm yourself down and figure out the problem. Tip 6. Pay attention to the trail and remember turns for later. Tip 7. Have a map, or use a GPS app like Gaia!! Download an offline map if you’re unfamiliar with an area. Thanks for reading and just as a last reminder!!! Be safe out there!!! via 500px ift.tt/2zeUmnU

In a country like Ukraine, you never know where you will end up. Especially if you only have offline maps at your disposal, it can sometimes be an adventure if you are suddenly sent into that side road. The first half hour you drive on a good road (for Ukrainian standards). We drive through remote villages where you literally see only Ladas. The road slowly gets worse, the potholes in the road get deeper. At some point you will arrive on a country/mountain road (see photo) that is probably fine to drive with a Niva or Land Rover, but our Ford Fiesta rental car had a hard time. After many kilometers further you almost want to kiss the asphalt when you have reached the provincial road again. But, that 'shortcut' was worth it!

Tent Ridge Hiking - 11km climbing mountains up and down... The Spay Lake is so beautiful even the wildfire causing the mist looking at Rocky Mountains.

Met 4 guys from US, we hiked together in order to scare the bears, it is the bears' country at Kananaskis. The Park Alberta staff told us, there were 6 bears in the area.

It is the exclusive pano view from 12 vertical photos.

The videos show our hiking on the ridge.

PS: Experiences and recommendations:

-- This is not a simple walk-up. You can go "Clockwise" or "Anti-clockwise". Clockwise is a bit easy.

-- You must be comfortable using your hands to scramble.

-- This is a long, demanding hike. Take enough water and food, no water on the ridge.

-- Start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms and to give yourself plenty of time.

-- Go with a group to avoid the bears in the bears' country

-- The ridge is completely exposed. If there is thunderstorm, high wind, rain, or snow/ice on the route, the rock becomes very slippery, do not attempt to hike on those weather!

-- You need download offline map (AllTrails, Gaia GPS or Topo Maps Canada). AllTrails and Gaia GPS need to pay, Topo Maps Canada is free, and it has all the trails info all over the world! You need to download it beforehand when there is signal, and you can use it offline!

While searching google maps, I found a rock clearing in the woods that appeared to have a good view of Morton Bay and Whitefish Lake looking west, which would also be ideal for sunsets, but once I started wandering the real world and lost my birds eye view that google provides, I found it tricky to find what I was looking for. (this was before I discovered offline maps for my phone, which takes all the guess work out of it)

I did find a rock clearing, but it wasn't the spot I was looking for, and the view of the water was mostly obscured by trees. After checking the map once I got home, I found out that I was just a few hundred meters from the place I was searching for.

The sunset wasn't very good, but just as the sun hit the horizon, a break in the clouds let the sunlight through, briefly illuminating the foreground. I quickly changed my camera settings, and hoped the clouds would catch some color, but that didn't happen. I had to rush back to get out of the woods before dark because I forgot my flashlight, and I made it back just in time.

I didn't get the sunset I was hoping for, but I had a great time exploring a new place.

I got a little lost the first time I tried to find this outcrop in the woods. I got pretty close on my first attempt, but I had to stop searching so I could start a timelapse of the sunset.

This time I found it using my phone and an offline map from google, which I downloaded before leaving the house. Even though there's no reception out here, GPS still works, which made it pretty easy to see my location and find the area I was looking for. I was a little late getting there, so I was quick to set up a timelapse, and once it was going, I kept exploring, looking for a better vantage point from the granite cliffs. (since this view was a little obscured by trees) I did find a better view, so I planned to visit this spot again in the future. .

This passageway was filled with a continuous stream of people, bicycles and rickshaws. I waited over five minutes for this brief lull so I could step out into the street and grab a shot. I wasn't standing there 10 seconds before a rickshaw pulled up behind me and started honking. In Old Delhi, stopping anywhere means you're going to end up in someone's way. It's hard to appreciate this without experiencing it. Darla and I commented to each other on several occasions that no picture or video could ever convey what this is like.

The labyrinth of side streets and passageways in areas like Old Delhi and Paharganj necessitates the use of a GPS if one doesn't wish to become hopelessly lost. I had downloaded several different offline maps to my iPhone before leaving home. These proved convenient for train travel and essential during our daily ventures into the unknown, whether on foot or by rickshaw. I was surprised by the accuracy of the maps. Everything was always right where it was supposed to be.

All three of us brought iPhones which we used with Indian (AirTel) SIM cards purchased at the Delhi airport. It used to be very difficult for foreigners to get Indian SIM cards but that is no longer the case. It's a five minute process. For $20 per SIM card, we each got phone service for a month and 1 GB of data—PER DAY. That's 90 GB of data between the three phones. Verizon offered to hook us all up with a month of phone service and 4 GB of shared data for $900. And that $900 didn't get us Indian phone numbers, a prerequisite for signing up with services like OLA, India's version of Uber.

Feeling the same way when walking around the streets of Chefchaouen. Every few intersections I’d check to make sure what the next few corners were, or possibly the new routing on getting back on track to where I expected to go.

Not sure what I’d do without my phone with offline maps and a GPS!
