Niland, California ~ East Jesus

I had the most wonderful photography experience of my life on my last trip to California. I visited the deserts of south Cali; Niland, California.

So much of our "America" that is uncovered... or covered...

Parked out at the Earthship community on the West Mesa near Taos, NM. A plethora of eclectic items around here. This is an interesting place, but really off the wall and a bit eerie.

Seeing truly wild animals in their native environment is such a privilege....and its moments like this one that find a permanent place deep inside one's soul.

I don't know how big flickr will let this be viewed; most of the interesting stuff is out there on the horizon between cloud and desert. But the clouds had to be included and that biggish off-the-grid place down there, I bet that's nice and quiet at night.

From partway up the Tom's Thumb Trail, Scottsdale.

A walk along the beach....what could be more relaxing? The daily grind put to halt. Fresh air and ocean breezes. Short lived? Sure. But enjoy it while you can!

My annual retreat to Nuevo Vallarta.....to stop the world and enjoy life.

The golden light of the setting sun casts a warm glow over the rugged mountains and flowing dunes, creating a breathtaking contrast between stone and sand. The landscape tells a tale of time, where wind and erosion have sculpted an ever-changing masterpiece of nature’s artistry. A place of solitude, mystery, and boundless beauty.

off the grid - fort mason, san francisco, california

Close to the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh railway line is this basic home that someone has made.

There are no amenities at this remote spot but the scenery is outstanding.

An earthship is a home that is composed of natural and recycled materials. They are off the grid, utilize solar power, are built somewhat into the ground to help regulate temperature, collect water from rain, and are pretty much self sustaining constructions. This particular earthship also had a greenhouse inside that housed plantlife, turtles, birds, and fish. There were chickens in the backyard, too. It also had 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a waterfall, fireplace, and full kitchen. .There is a collection of these earthships out in that region North-West of Taos, New Mexico. As far as I could see in every direction was desert and mountains (Sangre de Cristo). The community is called the Greater World Earthship Community.

I didn't know that they had a hostel when we came here and I was curious about it. This is the entrance to the hostel. Notice the inviting razor wire greeting you as you arrive. There was a sign saying they were open, but it was kind of hard to get through the locked gate and razor wire.

I looked at some pictures and read some reviews of the place and most people had nice things to say about the hostel environment. For only $30 you can get a place to sleep for the night. If you do stay here, you have to remember you are off the grid and they don't have all the normal amenities. No running water, flush toilets, or on grid electricity.

You have a community outdoor shower, porta potties, and a shared outdoor cooking area. You will be sleeping in an old camper that probably can't be put on the road again. Sound inviting, then get onto the air bnb site and reserve a room.

Once a hive of industry, now owned by the National Trust

Gibson Mill is situated on a remote site within Hardcastle Crags near to Hebden Bridge. Built in around 1800, it was one of the first mills of the Industrial Revolution. The addition of the weaving shed in 1840 led to the production of cotton cloth until 1890. At the turn of the century, it started a new life as an Entertainment Emporium with roller skating and tea dances until 1940 when it fell into ruin. The National Trust acquired it in 1950.

Ten years ago, the restoration of Gibson Mill began as a means to create a fully sustainable 'Off the Grid' building, offering a cafe facility and visitor centre telling the story of the history of the mill and surrounding area. It has operated since then without a connection to the outside world for energy, water and waste: it is the National Trust's only property which is 100% renewable.

A afternoons walk at HighCastle

Fortunately, we don't have hurricanes but we do have some pretty stormy weather! To date, we haven't lost any electricity or gas but if so I guess a little candle would come in handy!!
