Gyeongju - Cheomseongdae

Cheomseongdae was built during the reign of Silla Queen Seondeok (r.632-647) and is the oldest astronomical observatory in East Asia. It is 5.17 meters in diameter and 9.4 meters in height. The bottle-shaped tower made of square granite stones stands on the square stone base. The length of the stone base is 5.35 meters. Up to the 12th layer from the bottom, this hollow tower was filled with soil and pebbles. Between the 13th and the 15th layer, there is a square opening through which an observer can ascend to the top.

Cheomseongdae is an astronomical observatory in Gyeongju, South Korea. Cheomseongdae means star-gazing tower in Korean. Cheomseongdae is the oldest surviving observatory in East Asia. It dates to the 7th century to the time of kingdom of Silla, which had its capital in Gyeongju. Cheomseongdae was designated as the country's 31st national treasure on December 20, 1962.

Cheomseongdae is the oldest surviving observatory in East Asia, though some claim that it was not suitable for astronomical observation. Others posit that it was used for astrology rather than astronomy, though during that era there was little differentiation between the two. Some scholars have argued that Cheomsongdae's design was heavily influenced by Buddhism, noting similarities between its design and Mount Sumeru, the center of the world according to Buddhist mythology.

Abandoned since 1983, the observatory is located in East Cleveland, Ohio.

During my short family vacation in Souther California, I managed to get to this popular spot for sunrise/sunset in addition to holiday lights at those high-rising buildings.

It had been hazy all the time in LA basin, and this is the best one I had in the four trips.

The Arecibo Observatory is a radio telescope in the municipality of Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The observatory is the sole facility of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC), which refers to the observatory and the staff that operates it. The observatory's 1,000-foot (305 meter) radio telescope was the largest single-aperture telescope from its completion in 1963 until July 2016 when the 500 meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) in China was completed. It is used in three major areas of research: radio astronomy, atmospheric science, and radar astronomy. (Wikipedia - edited)

A number of landmark scientific discoveries have been achieved here including one that received a Nobel Prize.

In the photo, the spherical dish using wire mess as the reflective surface was constructed over a large sinkhole in the Karst Country hills near the town of Arecibo. The three towers support a movable cluster of receivers that capture the concentrated signals reflected from a high-precision

surface of the dish. In 1974, the wire mesh was replaced with 40,000 individually adjustable aluminum panels.

McCormick Observatory on the UVa hill in Charlottesville, VA. It was a chilly day, but beautiful for being out at such a great location. The fantastic building sits on the very top of the hill surrounded by the budding trees of spring. Easily accessible by road and yet there was barely anyone there. Just a few dog walkers.

A friend of mine is in Maui, and last night was asking for recommendations of things to do and see. Visiting Haleakala National Park was tops on my list. Thinking about it got me digging through my archives. This is a view of some of the observatories located at the peak. The sun was just finishing setting for us above the cloud layer, entering the horizon for those 10,000 feet below us. Haleakala is a magical place.

October 12, 2019 - Griffith Observatory before dawn at the Donut Street Meet Photographers Meetup, with the Astronomers Monument and Sundial in the foreground, which is the Obelisk. Terri and I arrived here extra early before most of the group to get some extra pictures in before our hike up the mountain with the Donut Street Meet! This is my first picture of the day and one of my favorites!

The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission is an international partnership co-led by NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) that will provide next-generation global observations of precipitation from space.

GPM will study global rain, snow and ice to better understand our climate, weather, and hydrometeorological processes.

As of Novermber 2013 the GPM Core Observatory is in the final stages of testing at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The satellite will be flown to Japan in the fall of 2013 and launched into orbit on an HII-A rocket in early 2014.

Bidston Observatory was built in 1866 using local sandstone excavated from the site. One of its functions was to determine the exact time. Up to 18 July 1969, at exactly 1:00 p.m. each day, the 'One O'Clock Gun' overlooking the River Mersey near Morpeth Dock, Birkenhead, would be fired electrically from the Observatory. In 1929 the work of the observatory was merged with the University of Liverpool Tidal Institute, being taken over in 1969 by the Natural Environment Research Council.

Abandoned since 1983, the observatory is located in East Cleveland, Ohio.

Observing the night sky

From www.parkes.atnf.csiro.au/:

The Parkes Observatory, is a 64-metre Telescope used for Radio Astronomy. It is located about 20 kilometres North of Parkes along the Newell Highway, which is approximately 380 kilometres West of Sydney. It is operated by the Australia Telescope National Facility, a division of CSIRO, which also includes the ATNF Headquarters at Marsfield in Sydney, the Compact Array and Mopra Observatory near Coonabarabran and the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder.

View On Black

The observatory, built and painted in the autumn of 2004, was in great need of a repainting. We employ Handyman at Your Command handycommand.com for such jobs. Highly recommended in the D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia area. The original color was "Ivory Tower" from Duron. Sherwin-Williams bought Duron a few years back, and they are able to duplicate Duron colors, and the color appears to be perfect match for the original, which is also the color of the vinyl siding on our house and our garden shed.

Griffith Observatory: The Observatory is the highlight of Griffith J. Griffith's contribution to Los Angeles. The construction of this art deco observatory was completed in the early 1930s and has since undergone a major renovation which has enameled it as one of Southern California's most popular landmarks. The Observatory's state-of-the-art Samuel Oschin Planetarium blasts off amazing light shows providing a visual feast for the eyes. Notwithstanding the new technology, simply walk outside and the observatory which provides outstanding views of the area during both day and night. Anyone even vaguely interested in astronomy will find the exhibits and planetarium shows fascinating. Griffith Observatory is of interest to film fans because it was the site of the unforgettable climax of Rebel Without a Cause starring James Dean.

Abandoned observatory in southern Sweden.

Taken on my recent trip to Hawaii. Stack of about 10 photos processed in StarStaX and photoshop to blend in an exposure for the observatory itself. Lucky that anything turned out since the wind was so bad.
