WORLD PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY DAY
Sunday April 27, 2025
As the sun set on this little beach at Low Head the sands started to glow a rich golden colour. With darkness falling the light is about to come on, and soon the Little Penguins will arrive at this beach to return to their burrows after a day at sea.
I find pinhole photography a wonderful antidote to the saturation diet we see of over-processed and super-sharp images that digital photography produces (not to mention AI monstrosities because they aren't photography!). Let a multitude of different ways of doing photography thrive. Even if people with truly catholic tastes are hard to find on social media.
So this one of my first attempts at astrophotography. I've had a few attempts before but the weather always had other plans. It was a great clear night and I saw a couple of shooting starts during my attempts which always make me smile. I have a lot to learn I think with the skills and techniques required I think my shutter speed was slightly too long at 25 seconds as trails started to appear even with the Samyang 14mm. Shutter speeds shouldn't be a problem next time as you can push the RAW files quite far it seems. Having said that I'll probably return to this shot in an hour and think it's far too over processed. I gave up eventually when my camera started frosting over however in hindsight I should have put the timer on some long shutter lengths to attempt to get some star trails whilst I got the zzz's in until morning!

maven's note:To give the heads-up for those who are willing to submit their images for Spring Fling Contest, I have uploaded sample images below. You can submit any kind of subject that has a Spring in the air...
To increase your chance of having your image (s) Published in Digital Camera World, Outdoor Photography, you'll need to follow the below rules to qualify:
Major disqualifiers:
Chromatic aberration or CA: (see above) and purple fringing are two distortion effects that can affect photographs. Even though they are often confused with one another, they are partially different in both their causes and effects.
Chromatic aberration can be seen in photos as light colored purple halo around parts of a scene. Manufacturers try to correct it by designing specialized lens elements and coatings.
Since no lens is perfect, especially zoom lenses, chromatic aberration is likely to remain visible at some focal lengths and apertures. Superzoom lenses are often more prone to chromatic aberration at their extreme focal lengths because zoom lenses are optimized at intermediate focal lengths.
Purple fringing is caused primarily by the processing done to every image by digital camera processors. The processor doesn’t always know how to interpret dramatic color. Purple fringing is, yes, primarily purple but it can be magenta and other colors as well.
Other reasons to have your images declined are:
-Reason: Potential copyright / trademark / privacy issue with photo (could be: copyrighted art, visible logo, license plate number, etc)
-Reason: Image looks over processed, no details left
-Reason: Artifact Problems: Noise/Grain/Chromatic or other artifacts due to low light, blue or purple fringing, high ISO, over-sharpening or post processing techniques. Please view image at 100% prior to submission
-Reason: Low interest subject: Probably little demand/selling potential for this image. Try for more marketable shots.
-Reason: Blurry: Image is not very crisp or is blurred when viewed at full size.
-Reason: Snapshot composition: This image is more of a snapshot than a marketable stock image. Overall problems can include poor lighting, poor composition, non-interesting subject matter, etc.
Reason: We have enough of this subject already...sorry. More unique images will help your images stand out from the crowd.

I was totally surprised when the plane flew over,
so grabbed my camera and took a few shots,
only to find out they were worthless.
So over processed one of the pics to make it work anyway

Have a nice Friday and stay healthy.
Many thanks for all your views, faves and comments.
It's not grain, it's spores.
Ok! Ok! My camera had a hissy fit and sulked because of the light, or lack of it.
And that amount of over-processing can only mean one thing....Happy Sliders Sunday :)
Can't wait for Steven Wilson at the Royal Albert Hall tonight, am going early to get some London shots, so I hope it stops raining!
A big THANK YOU for all your comments and faves :)
My previous Flickr picture, Eagle Attack, featured this house but was completely over processed with too many distractions. This is the same basic image, but I tried keeping the house as the main focus. I think it works better.

The picture came out a little too dark , so I didn't feel too bad about doing this to it; besides, everyone else seems to!

A Sliders Sunday submission for "over-processed" images. A Halloween-inspired image of a spider with yesterday's stormy skies over Sydney.
I've recently started using Snapseed to process some of my images. It's not as versatile as Photoshop, but I like the immediacy of it and the interface on the iPad is, literally, very hands on and a pleasure to use.
Not everyone will be a fan of the over processed look, but I enjoy experimenting with a more impressionistic portrayal of some of my shots. This one, taken at twilight on Portstewart Strand, had a dreamy quality about it anyway, so Snapseed tempted me across to experiment once more.
Another shot from my day photographing Eagles it might be a bit over processed for some - it's perfectly good without but I liked the idea of this bird praying (hence the play on words for the title), head bowed, maybe for good fortune or maybe for forgiveness at taking another life for food - all a bit romantic I know, but you know me I like a story and to enhance the photo according to the story!

CR2 RAW image processing for Canon 7D Comparison between Lightroom 3 beta 2 and 2.6
This image is from Lightroom 3 Beta 2 and luminance noise reduction is turned up 100%. It is clearly over processed but offers much more control over 2.6. I am getting similar results with Lightroom 3 at 25% and 2.6 at 100%. Huge improvement (in this case)
I posted a comparison between Lightroom 2.6 and beta 3-2 on my website
A vibrant sunset in the Palouse from a few years back. I have photographed probably 25 to 30 sunsets in the Palouse over the years and this was one of the more vibrant ones I can remember. I really had to try and avoid the reds getting over processed and blown out. Normally I focus on the hills and little to no sky. This time the sky certainly had to be included!
Note: the shadow off in the distance is from Steptoe Butte (where I am standing when I took this).
Processing Comments: As requested here are some additional details. First off this was a single RAW image I was able to work from which helped. I started by reducing exposure for the sky and increased slightly for the ground. Once in PS I used luminosity masks for lights and darks to bring those areas more to my liking. Then a curves adjustment layer for 2/3’s of the foreground (FG) to slightly increase contrast. The dirt patch in the FG came out more magenta so I worked that color to blend in better with the green fields. Then I added vibrance mask to bring more color and pop to the image. After doing this I needed to tone done some of the reds in the sky because they were blown out. Clean up some dust spots and then run an action for the web version and there you have it. Overall processing was not that involved. Hope this helps.

The preserved ruins of the San Juan Capistrano mission.
A sliders Sunday submission, where over-processing of images is encouraged. This is a panoramic view of Palm Beach, on the northern outskirts of Sydney, stitched from 3 portrait-mode images. The weather was overcast producing some drab colours, which I have over-corrected, and also darkened the cloudy sky.
Back lit images are always tricky and this image has been no exception. The trick is knowing just how much to go into contrast without losing detail or there can be a tendency to head towards over processing. This particular image has also been awkward due to the healthy mixture of warm bracken bathed in winter light and the cold blue frost. I have tried to proses this image before, but I was always slightly bothered by the eccentric colours, but I felt it was time to let it out of the bag…
Have been playing around with Aurora HDR. Bit over-processed for some tastes, but I quite liked the finished result. Colour version of my previous photo.

Late evening on hot and humid August evening in Nebraska. Warnings popped up about an hour before this storm was even visible to the eye over the horizon at sunset.
Spectacular Colors emitting from this stacked supercell. Cloud to Cloud Lightning shooting off every few seconds made this a storm chasers dreamscape.
Gear in hand that evening I traveled north out of Odessa Nebraska. Sat about 7 miles to the southwest of Amherst Nebraska. This storm was moving almost due south, southeast, meaning it was coming right at my location.
It would be a Historic Event to capture! Now remastered to the original color with no enhancements. Enjoy!

It has been awhile since I have come back to this set of images.
Original Set of Images can be found here on Flickr
This set of images is and still has been the most stolen set of images I have on the web on several platforms. Literately millions of views with no link back to my work or my photostream. Probably why I haven't revisited this set til now.
Just to let you know, those images were WAY over processed, over saturated etc. Yes I'm guilty. But it was the way I did things back then. I don't anymore.
Every year I go back and edit a few sets of images that deserve to be re-edited or reprocess from raw. I'm also adding several images from this set I didn't share last time around.
Beautiful storm photography from my best of 2014 Collection!

In a few days I'll be back in this place for some much needed Disney time and work time (technically I'll be a few feet to the right of this since right now I have no Coaster shifts but that's besides the point)
A bit over processed, yes. Do I still like yea. I'll figure out this Photoshop thing sooner or later.
when its not meant to be. This little sod perched on the flashes, on the hide in fact just about everywhere i didn't want him to but who cares it was great watching him. This was out of the proper flash coverage so a bit over processed but it is such a wonderful sight. looks like there is no option but to light this approach perch next time as its where he feels comfortable at the moment. What a wonderful night.
No one has ever seen the surface of Jupiter, but this is what it could look like. But in reality it's just a photo of some q-tips heavily over-prosessed with filters, textures and experiments HSOS !!!
Solely for this week's "Smile on Saturday" topic of "over-processed clouds". (I might delete it later. 😉)

It pays great dividends to photograph landscapes during the right weather and lighting conditions. When high quality neutral density graduated filters are used, the RAW files look 'almost ready' for publication. This photograph of the Seven Sisters on the south coast of England, demonstrates my new found love of natural colours and tones. When a photograph is already complete, there is no need for over-saturation and other forms of over-processing.
Unfortunately, my journey with LEE Filters has not been smooth. I was lucky to obtain two filters earlier this year. I have no filter holder, which means that my LEE filters are getting scratched; they have to be hand-held, and as such they make contact with the lens barrel. Without a filter holder to protect them, I may have to suspend landscape photography until one arrives. Yesterday, my hopes of obtaining a LEE Universal Hood and 2 slot Filter Holder were elevated to ecstatic proportions, when I telephoned Robert White Photographic; five were in stock, I was told. Overjoyed, I placed an immediate order, choosing next day delivery. In a rush of excitement, I cancelled a pending order of the same item from Warehouse Express. I was 13 weeks into a 20 week projected waiting list. Early yesterday evening, I received an email from Robert White Photographic, stating that the LEE Universal Hood is out of stock and they have no confirmed date for arrival. After complaining, I received an apologetic email offering to place me first on the waiting list.
Played with this picture a few times - latest version with a "bit" of sliding. Used DAP (Dynamic Auto Painter) this time around (Golden_Age_Finer#001).

Uploaded for Smile on Saturday, theme "OVER-PROCESSED"
Tulips, shot with an analog camera, Canon Eos 5, and the Lomography Petzval lens. Film: Fujifilm Professional 400, expired for 12 years. Not much over processing needed with this combination....
Happy Saturday everybody
Somewhere near Orton, Cumbria. Image deliberately over processed so not to everyone's taste. I like it so if you don't then, tough... 😀
Used the golden reflections from a stream as a template for the sky.

You can probably detect that this is a little over processed. Used analog efex pro (for the first time!) to grunge this up a little and add some mystery...

Leica m9
summicron 50mm, f2
i've been having quite some challenges trying to find a way to have my m9 shots look good. don't get me wrong, they look awesome straight out of camera, but i have been having difficulties "owning" my shots, or let's say "possess" them in a way i would be pleased with.
i guess i just don't feel like over processing my m9 shots. they look so amazing, to the point i can't have my regular x1 process applied to them effectively. in other words, back to the old drawing board.
After 4 failed attempts at processing this shot the right way and two hours of hesitations, i went back to the original raw file. and kept the color tones very strictly similar to the original shot. switched the WB to fluorescent light, had a small pass of very subtle dodge and burn layers, and voila.
i am convinced getting an m9 will represent some exciting challenges. first of, as some of you may know, i'm a photoshop guy, but i think i will have to download lightroom and give it another try this time. we'll see what it gives.
oh, and i actually bought another lens for the collection. Since i was not having any 35 equivalent yet for the M mount, i ordered a Voigtlander 35mm 1.2. i know it is not Leica glass, forgive the blasphemy, but i really needed a super fast low light option that would not have costed me an arm. the summilux will have to wait. besides, that voigtlander seems to give stellar shots and extrelemy decent bokeh.
