The coal extracted from the mines in Redstone Co was of such high quality it was perfect for converting to coke for the production of steel at the CF& I Steel Mill in Pueblo, CO. It make John Osgood a multi-millionaire in the late 1800s. The ovens were in operation 24 hours a day. Now they have been dormant since the 1950s and are under restoration.

This distinctive rock formation in the San Rafael Swell Recreation Area in Utah is called the "Coke Ovens." These pillar-like sandstone towers are a well-known landmark on the eastern flank of the Swell, visible from both hiking routes and scenic drives in the region.

They are named for their resemblance to old-fashioned coke ovens, which were used to convert coal into coke for smelting iron. The Coke Ovens are composed primarily of Wingate Sandstone and are part of the dramatic geological landscape that defines the San Rafael Reef, a steeply inclined section of the Swell formed during the Laramide Orogeny about 40 to 60 million years ago. It is just one of many distinctive rock formations found in the Swell.

It appears this old brick ruin once had an external oven that has since been removed. I've seen a lot of very old homes with a dome shaped connection to the house for baking. I can't be sure though. I'm not an expert. However, any info or guesses would be welcome.

A wood-fired pizza oven typically reaches temperatures between 400C and 485C to cook a pizza in about 60 to 90 seconds. The high heat is necessary to cook the crust from the bottom up and the toppings from the top down, creating a crispy yet chewy base and perfectly charred toppings.
