Living on the edge - From the other side (B&W). Although I grew up in a working class area of a big city I find myself drawn to photograph the the coast and the junction of land, sea and sky. Mankind has been part of this landscape for thousands of years and we are now as much a part of it as the waves.
Blakeney Point at Blakeney, Norfolk, England is a spit of land that stretches out into the sea from Cley. It provide safe moorings for boats in the naturally protected Blakeney Harbour and the end is home to England's largest grey seal colony with around 4,000 pups born each year. The building is the old lifeboat house which is now an exhibition centre and home to the National Trust wardens that look after the area and colony.
It was bitter sweet for me to return to Shark Fin Cove after an absence of many years. This was one of the beaches I first photographed when I got into landscape photography. While still learning the ropes, I did not get any worthy photos but gained some valuable experience.
Fast forward about 6 years later, I finally made another attempt at this location. Watching an incredible band of clouds funnel through the Bay Area all day I was wondering what could be at sunset. Meeting up with Jeff and Tung, we decided to head south towards the Santa Cruz coastline. Trying to pinpoint exactly where the cloud mass would end up, we decided that Shark Fin Cove would be an ideal location to shoot. Embarrassingly, we first went to the wrong beach. Half way down the trail Jeff and I looked at each other asking where the sea stack went. Clearly, we had stopped at the incorrect beach. On our second attempt we arrived at Shark Fin Cove.
The light this evening was one of those nights to remember. The sky burned for over half an hour with incredible textures and dynamic colors. Throughout the light show I was running all over the beach trying to capture various compositions. Seemingly benign, this sea cave was anything but that. When the waves came crashing in, the water rushed in very fast. Jeff and I found ourselves constantly running back and forth using only a few seconds in between waves to setup, focus, and fire away our exposures. It took a few attempts but thankfully the large dynamic range of my sensor really helped out.
The other day a fox was running across our clearing in broad daylight. When I left the house to photograph her, she ran to the other side of the clearing and jumped onto the fence like a cat! And she stayed on the fence for about a minute, so I had time to take a few pictures.
Thank you all for visits, favs and comments, it's greatly appreciated!

" I was working hard the other day..
actually, it was my weekly outdoor field day..
I was ready with my claws all sharp..
what happened next I still can't grasp..
it was like struck by sudden fever..
I was face to face with this big beaver..
my instinct said "stay and fight"..
the brain said " run or jump very high"..
my pride was hurt just a little bit..
not that I will ever admit..
think I will stay inside for a while..
just trying to calm things slightly down..
with my new boring indoor lifestyle.."

Okay so wobbles team lost the football but he is still a winner for me-Still life that is not like the others
Early start and a ride down to the other local woods that border the Manchester Ship Canal on one side and industrial units on the other.
Not been here for a while and the intention was to fly the drone.
When I arrived this oil tanker, The Thun London was in view by a place called Mount Manisty which is the slag heap from the original canal cutting. A quick change of plans and this is the resulting shot.
After it had passed I still had enough time to fly the drone and checked the drone assist app. The area is in a Controlled Traffic Region ( CTR, ) and I couldn't remember if you are allowed to fly in a CTR so decided against it and made the mile or so ride home.
As it happens you can fly in a CTR. I also checked this ship and it was outbound for Amsterdam, which then got me checking oil pipelines, which then had me checking the entire European pipelines from Russia and Azerbaijan across Poland, The Czech Republic and Germany into Holland. I also checked the draught of this ship ( 6.5m ) and the depth of the canal at this point is 28 feet. So it's clearance from the bottom of the canal is only about the height of an average bloke. I then discovered the MSC is tidal up to Latchford near Warrington and ships of this size can only use the canal for a few hours either side of high tide.
All of which is fascinating to a pedant like me but probably inherently boring to most. And all of which I'd forgot and had to go trawling the internet to find the info out again before posting.
It's a long day when you take your exercise so early but worth it in the end.

Reminded me of an aerial shot of another planet as I stood by the old apple tree at the bottom of the garden. The gnarled, heavily textured trunk a landscape in its own right. There may be a few more of these to come!

Where are you?
Blue
And blue
And green
And naked brown
Where are you?
There is a sound on the other side of this wall
A burning singing on the other side of this wall
Footsteps
Concealed
Silences preserving our voice
Walking in the wind at the water's edge
Comes close to covering my rubber feet
Listening to the barbed wire hanging
There is a sound on the other side of this wall
A burning singing on the other side of this wall
Footsteps
Concealed
Silences preserving our voice
Your rails
You're thin
Your thin paper wings
Your thin paper wings
In the wind, dangling
Your sun, fly high
Your windows shattered in the wind
Rattling, rattling
Sugar box, sugar boy
Handheld candle sugar boy
Sugar box, sugar boy
Handheld candle sugar boy
Your rails
You're thin
Your thin paper wings
Your thin paper wings
In the wind
Dangling
Your sun, fly high
Your windows shattered in the wind
Your Coca-Cola sign
Rattling, rattling
Resonator, resonator
Resonator, resonator
Resonator, resonator
Resonator
Homeless trees gathering
Outside your window bootleg babies call to you and lie among the mosquitoes
That summer's fever coming
Cats are gathering outside your window
Homeless trees
Bootleg babies call to you and lie among the mosquitoes
Your rails
You're thin
Your thin paper wings
In the wind
Your sun, fly high
Dangling, dangling
Your windows shattered in the wind
Your rails
Your thin paper wings, paper wings
I made a drawing for you to find
I left it against the toughened grass
Where the land slides
They were for you, only you
Where are you?
There is a sound on the other side of this wall
A burning singing on the other side of this glass
Footsteps
Concealed
Silences returning our voice
Why are you always dragging me?
Do you ever stop to think?
And when you do, what comes out?
Walking in the wind at the water's edge
Comes close to covering my rubber feet
Listening to the barbed wire hanging
As I read these marks
Where you first found me
I wonder how long that would be
And will I still be here
Walking in the wind at the water's edge
Comes close to covering my rubber feet
Listening to the barbed wire hanging
There is a sound on the other side of this glass
A burning singing on the other side of this glass
Footsteps
Concealed
Silences returning our voice

You should walk away
Did you walk away
You shouldn’t walk
Did you walk away
You should walk away
Did you walk away

This is my second night at Alstrom Point Overlook at Lake Powell and I had a lot more airglow on this night for some reason so the color is a bit different. The otherworldly landscape made me feel like I was on another planet. I camped here and woke up to another awesome Sunrise.
