Orm, Scheinman & Leifer, US, 1965

Orm was the first computer-controlled arm. Designers Victor Scheinman and Larry Leifer used compressed air instead of motors to power the unit. Orm, Norwegian for “snake,” featured 28 inflatable sacks that were sandwiched between seven metal disks. It worked by selectively inflating groups of sacks to move the arm. The design was eventually abandoned because the arm’s movement could not be accurately repeated.
