Red Squirrel - Sciurus Vulgaris

The red squirrel is found in both coniferous forest and temperate broadleaf woodlands. The squirrel makes a drey (nest) out of twigs in a branch-fork, forming a domed structure about 25 to 30 cm in diameter. This is lined with moss, leaves, grass and bark. Tree hollows and woodpecker holes are also used. The red squirrel is a solitary animal and is shy and reluctant to share food with others. However, outside the breeding season and particularly in winter, several red squirrels may share a drey to keep warm. Social organization is based on dominance hierarchies within and between sexes; although males are not necessarily dominant to females, the dominant animals tend to be larger and older than subordinate animals, and dominant males tend to have larger home ranges than subordinate males or females.

Red squirrels that survive their first winter have a life expectancy of 3 years. Individuals may reach 7 years of age, and 10 in captivity. Survival is positively related to availability of autumn–winter tree seeds; on average, 75–85% of juveniles die during their first winter, and mortality is approximately 50% for winters following the first.

Although not thought to be under any threat worldwide, the red squirrel has nevertheless drastically reduced in number in the United Kingdom; especially after the grey squirrels were introduced from North America in the 1870s. Fewer than 140,000 individuals are thought to be left in 2013; approximately 85% of which are in Scotland, with the Isle of Wight being the largest haven in England. A local charity, the Wight Squirrel Project,[26] supports red squirrel conservation on the island, and islanders are actively recommended to report any invasive greys. The population decrease in Britain is often ascribed to the introduction of the eastern grey squirrel from North America, but the loss and fragmentation of its native woodland habitat has also played a role.

In January 1998, eradication of the non-native North American grey squirrel began on the North Wales island of Anglesey. This facilitated the natural recovery of the small remnant red squirrel population. It was followed by the successful reintroduction of the red squirrel into the pine stands of Newborough Forest. Subsequent reintroductions into broadleaved woodland followed and today the island has the single largest red squirrel population in Wales. Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour is also populated exclusively by red rather than grey squirrels (approximately 200 individuals).

The Follow the Flag organization annually hangs one of the largest United States of America Star & Stripes in a 600 foot canyon in Snow Canyon State Park in St George Utah every November in honor of Veteran’s Day. My damsel and I while in Snow Canyon we able to view the immense American flag that spans a quarter of an acre. The founders of the organizations premise is very basic, from their webpage “the spirit of the American flag has a way of making us all feel connected.” The mission statement of the organization, “Honor Heal, Inspire”. [I am leaving early Thursday morning for a two-day trip to the département of Drôme, a one to two-hour drive from my home near Lyon. In addition to a personal visit to the Romanesque church of Saint-Restitut, I will photograph two monuments that were aided financially by the Fondation du Patrimoine, one of the non-profit organizations for which I work as a pro bono photographer. Those photos will appear in a commemorative book that we at the Fondation are working on to celebrate 25 years of activity in the Rhône-Alpes region. Therefore, I will not be able to upload anything until Saturday morning and I apologize for that to those of you kind enough to follow my stream. As usual, however, I will take an iPad with me and will therefore be able to check up on some of the Flickr activity while away.]

 

Nested very far away from the touristic thoroughfares, in a hamlet of half a dozen houses in the middle of nowhere in the mountainous part (660 meters of altitude) of the département of Ardèche (southeastern France), the former Benedictine priory church of Veyrines, dedicated to Saint Mary, is one of those historical and architectural jewels that I so love to discover.

 

In the Middle Ages, paradoxically, the isolation of the locale was less: mule tracks coming from the towns of Tournon and Annonay down in the plains, and going to Le Puy and the Massif Central mountains, snaked through here. Veyrines was the perfect stopover between the Rhône Valley and the Velay mountains and benefited from quite some human and merchandise traffic. A subsidiary of the abbey of Saint-Chaffre, the priory of Veyrines was protected by the Pagan family of local lords, whose ancestor Aymon originally (i.e., during the late 1000s) donated a first church and the land around it to Saint-Chaffre to build a priory. Even though the Pagan family became extinct in 1326, the priory apparently went through the Hundred Years War unscathed, but suffered during the Wars of Religion and the nave had to be at least partly rebuilt in the 17th century, obviously (from what I have seen) using a lot of the remaining Mediæval stones that must have been scattered and left lying around. Robert Saint-Jean, in his Zodiaque book Vivarais et Gévaudan romans, hesitates to say whether those walls were actually rebuilt or not, and to which extent, as the stonework really looks identical to the Romanesque one. Modern scientific methods of dating would have to be used on the mortar to know for sure.

 

As is often the case, the best part of that small mountain church is the transept, choir and apse. Among the sculpted capitals, two historied ones are particularly noteworthy: one depicting the Original Sin in several phases, and one showing the Descent of Christ in Limbo. Both are executed in a naive, primitive manner, but a very powerful, meaningful and evocative one as well, as we will see in detail.

 

The very simple and charming nave, which was rebuilt, at least in part, during the 1600s, as mentioned above (the wayside cross mentioned in my first photo was probably erected at the same time). However, whatever work that took place was carried out with old Romanesque stones and masonry techniques so similar that it is virtually impossible to say for certain which part was redone, and which dates back from the 1100s, when the priory church was built.

 

The two largely splayed windows (including one in the northern wall, a rare occurrence for a church located where Winters were long and cold, and weather generally not very clement) are indisputably authentic. No part of them was ever rebuilt.

 

The framework roofing we see now is, obviously, modern. However, the thin walls and the absence of any reinforcements, be they support arches or buttresses, tells us that this church was never meant to be vaulted.

This is somehow really new . On the one hand, this is a set for a brickfilm I'm producing for a local Brickfilm contest. This is just a short scene and the film is not an action movie.

On the other hand the soldiers on the right are somehow my new faction. Do you like them?

2009 Montreal Carifiesta (Jump Up) which took place on July 4th this year. The party went on despite the on and off rain, heavy winds and the split in the organizing committees! The later was more evident as a split in organization also played out with the parade! There also seemed to be less floats than in previous years, but the "band played on"!

Sea Shepherd names latest turtle campaign after murdered Costa Rican conservationist Jairo Mora

 

The environmental group Sea Shepherd will patrol beaches during this year’s turtle nesting season in the name of murdered Costa Rican conservationist Jairo Mora.

 

The group announced “Operation Jairo” on April 23 and asked for volunteers to help patrol beaches against poachers and other dangers in southeastern Florida, Honduras and Costa Rica.

 

“Sea Shepherd’s Operation Jairo campaign will span the peak nesting or hatching months for sea turtles in all three locations, in an effort to save as many hatchlings as possible – giving the next generations of these endangered species a fighting chance at survival,” the organization wrote on its website.

 

For the first time, the group will patrol Moín Beach in Costa Rica’s Limón province, the beach where Mora was brutally killed — allegedly by a group of poachers — in 2013.

 

In January, a criminal court acquitted seven men of Mora’s murder, citing reasonable doubt. The court also scolded the government for botching the investigation and trial proceedings.

 

Sea Shepherd will be patrolling from mid-July to mid-September in Fort Lauderdale, and from May 31st until September in Honduras and Costa Rica.

 

In Costa Rica, volunteers hope to protect hawksbill, green and leatherback sea turtles on Pacuare and Moín beaches. Poachers are the main threat.

 

Five out of seven species of sea turtles are endangered, and three of them —hawksbill, kemp’s ridley and leatherback — are listed as critically endangered.

The Dawn’s Raiders Guild is an old organization that has been acting in the shadows for centuries. They specialize in salvaging equipments and ship’s parts from space battlefields. They excel at analyzing archives and other sources to locate lost ships or artifacts. Throughout their history, they never associated to any other faction, but sold items and parts to all. What they didn’t sold, or decided to keep to themselves, they used to build a fleet of transport ships, tugs, and what they’d need for their work. But they also assembled larger combat vessels and fighters to protect themselves.

The Dawn didn’t supported the rebellion in their fight against the Galactic Empire, but a few Raiders either helped them recover some parts or sold them with a special discount. In the recent years, they feared to deal with the First Order and so completely avoided them or the Resistance. But when captain Zar Mioln received Lando Calrissian's call for help, he decided to join the battle and set course to Exegol with his ship: The Harvester.

 

The Harvester is an ancient Zenith-class cruiser that served in diplomatic mission during the Old Republic. It was salvaged by the Dawn’s Raiders Guild somewhere in an uncharted quadrant of the outer rim. It was in relatively good shape, except for the port side of its hangar bay that was completely destroyed. The Raiders repaired the ship, while increasing its hangar bay size, and adding various feature that would help them in their operations, like a larger bay opening and powerful tractor beam projectors.

Under captain Zar Mioln command, the Harvester carries a fleet of tugs and utilitary crafts used to tear down large ships’ wreckages. And to protect its operations, it can count on a squadron composed of reassembled starfighters or bombers parts, what the corellians would call Uglies, but in a far efficient and elegant way due to the skills and resources the Dawn’s engineers have access to.

 

Zar Mioln personal fighter is the Uterceptor, a salvaged U-Wing with Tie Interceptor wings mounted on the starboard side, and heavily armed. He leads a squadron composed of a few Z-Ceptors and X-Bombers.

Its been a while since I've posted any pictures of my (our) Lego building studio.

 

Last year, the room was completely renovated. Originally, the room was built as part of a house extension in 1985 to enclose a hot tub and shower. Since owning the house, we used the hot tub only a few years until we shut it down and converted the room into a playroom. The playroom then evolved into a family Lego studio. During this time, we built storage and work spaces around the hot tub. This of course resulted in inefficient use of space and inconvenient accessibility.

 

Finally, in 2018 we embarked on a much needed renovation. This involved removal of the hot tub and infrastructure, followed by new floor joists and framing. The shower was converted into a storage closet and the entire room received new tiled floor with under floor heating system.

 

Of the best attributes of this studio is abundant natural light emanating from large floor to ceiling windows and three overhead skylights. For nighttime use, the room is illuminated from ceiling mounted track lighting and a series of adjustable gooseneck LED worklights fitted along the entire length of the work spaces.

 

Lastly, a custom centre island was constructed from 2x Ikea Kalax storage units. The units were bolted together, a table top surface was installed (with bullnose edges) and heavy duty castor wheels were fitted to the bottom. This centre island not only incorporates integrated storage but serves as an immensely useful worksurface for staging models, sorting parts, or collaboration.

 

Storage and parts organization is a topic for another day. Suffice to say, we use Ikea Trofast drawers for bulk parts storage of major colours. We use wall mounted Kalax units (not shown) for less used colours, the island Kalax units store monochrome colour detail parts (e.g. slopes, round bricks, etc.), and finally the workspaces are completely surrounded by many 100's of small parts bins organized by part type and also colour if applicable. All storage is labelled using custom python software scripts which generate part thumbnails, part descriptions etc. and automatically lays out label graphics for a variety of Avery brand label sheets of different sizes.

 

It is a wonderful space to spend time being creative and having fun! Now I just need time to enjoy it!

 

One of my goals on the doll front for 2015 was improving the doll clothes storage system. I'll put that at about 75% success. It worked out best for the pukifee.

This is a building right next to this one in Barcelona. The building itself is rather plain and ugly, however I found the shutters kind of interesting.

Klarion the Witch Boy had teleported himself to the headquarters of the illegal smuggling organization “The Otherkind”, in hopes of purchasing an item he’d had his eyes on for quite a while. “The Helm of Flame”. An ancient weapon, myths say that the mask can transform your body into that of a demon, if you read a specific ancient script. There is no known proof of this, however. On opposite sides of the room stood several members of the group, working in different ways, like stocking shelves or chopping up wood to make more shelves. Waiting to purchase this item, Klarion had stood silent in the dark, cold, damp cement building, unnoticed.

 

Klarion: …Ahem?

 

A bearded man was sitting on the floor, who now looked up from his can of tomato soup to look into Klarion’s demonic eyes.

 

Bearded man: Eh? Oh, uh… Is this the guy?

 

The bearded man spoke with a raspy Russian accent, before looking up to The Rip, who was the organization’s leader. The Rip’s appearance was an odd one. A silhouette, entirely blacked out, standing at roughly 6’7”.

 

The Rip: Indeed it is. Klarion. It is an honour to meet you.

 

The Rip spoke in a very smooth but deep voice. It wasn’t loud, but when he spoke, it felt as if it was the only thing you could hear. It grabbed your attention instantly.

 

Klarion: Why, thank you. You know what I came for, yes?

 

The Rip: I do remember, yes. The Helm of Flame.

 

Klarion: Mhm! Now shall your servant fetch it for me, along with the script?

 

The Rip: I’d prefer if you weren’t to degrade my coworkers, but yes, Alec shall grant it to you. Alec?

 

He turned to the bearded man… Or at least Klarion assumed he did. With a man who appears physically as a mass of darkness it’s hard to tell.

 

Alec: Alrighty… Just a second…

 

He took one last spoonful from the tin can, a small portion of it spilling on his bright blue overcoat before he stood up. He set the can and spoon on the filthy stone floor before he waddled to the Helm of Flame on the shelf, before handing it to Klarion.

 

Alec: Here ya’ go.

 

Klarion: …There’s chowder on the script. It’s filthy, and that’s unacceptable..! Fetch me another.

 

Alec: Uh… Y’know there’s only one of ‘em, right?

 

The Rip walked over to Klarion, and tapped his fingers against the corner of the script.

Klarion rummaged through a leather wallet, while holding the helm and script under his arm.

Klarion handed The Rip the 5 million dollars.

 

The Rip: Ötałlo-kå.

 

With a poof of purple smoke, the money vanished.

 

Klarion: Pleasure doing business with you.

 

The Rip: The pleasure is mine, Klarion.

 

Klarion: Shalån-Greėm.

 

Klarion vanished. A moment after, a worker in an orange sweater walked from the shadows. He hadn’t been doing anything to help the organization, unlike the others.

 

Man in orange: What a brat.

 

Both Alec and The Rip turned to the man in orange…

 

The Rip: …What did you just say, Walter?

 

Alec: Sh#t, dude…

 

The two other members of The Otherkind stopped working and turned to “Walter”. One was a man in a black coat and orange scarf, the other a young woman in a purple sweater.

 

Man in scarf: Oh, dear lord…

 

The woman in purple simply put her hands over her mouth in shock.

 

Walter: I’m just sayin’. What? You all thought it, be real.

 

The Rip: You understand in the 2 months of being here you’ve done nothing but stand around, correct? Watching your coworkers work painfully hard while all you have to do is stock shelves, and yet you can’t even do that right? The others have been doing their jobs correctly for years, and after being here for 2 months, you can’t even manage to be kind to my client.

 

Walter: I really don’t see what the big deal is.

 

Alec: Shut up! Dude, seriously!

 

The Rip: I hadn’t had to speak to you about your laziness, as much as it had frustrated me. But this? Mocking a client? You think you have the right to do that?This is where I draw the line.

 

The Rip walked slowly and ominously towards Walter while speaking…

 

Walter: He was just a kid, who cares?

 

The Rip: You’re not listening to me, are you? You never listen to me. You don’t deserve to be part of this organization. You have such little respect that probably didn’t even attempt to remember my name.

 

Walter: “Rip”, right?

 

The Rip stood in place…

 

The Rip: Yes. Surprisingly, you got that right… But do you know why that is?

 

Walter: Uh… No.

 

The Rip: Well… Let me show you.

 

The Rip’s chest and stomach spread open like a vertical mouth, pointed with jagged fang-like spikes. From the gaping void in his torso appeared long, reddish tendrils. The first latched around Walter’s right arm. Then the left. And then his legs. This was the first time The Rip had seen Walter express genuine fear.

 

Walter: Agh, Christ..! I-… I can’t move!

 

The rest of The Otherkind were silent, watching what was happening. The tentacles seemed to grow even longer, pulling Walter high into the air as his eyes opened wider, his forehead shining with sweat. More tendrils appeared, rubbing their pointed tips against Walter’s freakishly warm skin. The man in the scarf ran to help Walter, only to be knocked back by one of the tentacles, causing him to be bashed against a stone wall.

 

Man in scarf: *uff*!

 

The Rip: Stay back, Malcolm. This is necessary.

 

Suddenly, one of the tentacles tore the left leg straight off of Walter, it dropped to the floor, blood spilling out from the gaping wound and onto the limb in puddles. Walter tried to scream, but his mouth was being filled by the tentacles. Tears ran down both his and most of the other members’ faces.

 

Alec: What the hell!?

 

Malcolm: Jesus…

 

The woman in purple was silent, her pupils microscopic, her whole body was shaking. This horrific sight had seemed to effect her the most out of the members. Through the gaps between the hands covering her eyes she noticed the tentacles tugging even harder on each of the limbs, the sound of cracking bones echoed through the room. Eventually all three remaining limbs split apart, leaving a pile of broken pieces on the floor. Walter was nothing but broken bones, torn skin, muscle, and large masses of blood. Walter’s head was still fully intact when it hit the floor, however, his eyes were still wide open and his jaw fully extended, staring into the souls of the remaining members.

 

Woman in purple: No… No no no…

 

She fell to her knees, her hands dropping to the floor, her tears breaking through like a waterfall. Malcolm stood beside her, putting his hand on her shoulder to comfort them. Meanwhile all the tentacles sucked themselves quickly back into The Rip, before he reached his hand down to Walter’s mutilated corpse.

 

The Rip: Ötałlo-kå.

 

What was rest of Walter disappeared. The Rip turned to the other members.

 

The Rip: I am deeply sorry if you found the visuals of Walter’s deserved punishment a tad graphic.

 

Malcolm: “A tad”? You slaughtered the poor guy. Look at Cindy here, look what you did.

 

“Cindy” looked up at The Rip, a hint of rage behind her tears.

 

Cindy: You monster!!!

 

She got up and lunged at The Rip, only for him to put his hand forward in a shielding position.

 

The Rip: Hīdoth-pöl.

 

She teleported back where she was before.

 

The Rip: Your anger is justified, though please, take this experience as a lesson. I love you all deeply, you’re like family to me. I’d rather not be forced to punish one of you like I did today. So stay in line. Thank you. Now, back to work.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with representatives of scouting organizations who handed him the Peace Light of Bethlehem. He thanked them and congratulated them on the upcoming Christmas.

Among the attendees were members of the youth organization Plast – National Scout Organization of Ukraine, the nationwide youth NGO National Organization of the Scouts of Ukraine, and the NGO Association of Ukrainian Guides.

The children shared how they support youth in frontline regions and maintain connections with young Ukrainians abroad. The scouting organizations also support our wounded warriors. More than half a thousand members of the Plast – National Scout Organization of Ukraine have joined the Defense Forces.

The Peace Light of Bethlehem will later be delivered to the front lines and handed over to Ukrainian defenders.

Week in the Life - Day 4

Sort, contain and label...Re Ment storage in the Nook.

 

Drawer holds plastic craft containers (purchased at Walmart) of re ment. Used dymo tape to label containers and color coded as follows, pink= kitchen items, yellow=food items, green=home decor and bath.

 

Bigger boxes (made by Paperchase/purchased at Borders) hold larger, boxed furniture and are stored on shelves. Pink photo boxes hold larger loose miniatures and other craft supplies.

  

I bet many of you know about the organization called Invisible Children & this whole thing about Kony 2012. Well, I went into watching this video. At first, I thought it was just a really long boring stupid video. A video that I would eventually forget, but I was wrong. It's a video about these children in Africa that are being abducted overnight and being forced to be soldiers in Kony's army or "wives" for his officers. . This has been going on for 26 years and no one has done anything about it. Not many were even informed about this until now 2012. Over this long expansion of 26 years Kony and his army has abducted over 30,000 children, and displaced over 2.1 million. I just can't even imagine how someone could even do this for 26 years. This picture is for those "invisible children" because they truly are invisible. If this ever happened in the United States, the whole world would know. But guess what, we are the future of our world, and we can make a change by simply spreading the word. I encourage you to watch that video or pledge here. I somehow want to be the change for my world as it grows. I want my kids to feel like my generation did something important, and maybe by doing this you can do that. Our world can be a peaceful place, but it's our decisions that do that. I say we can make our world better and make Kony famous for being one of the world's worst criminals.
