The Iowa Northern and Canadian National operated a joint special across the majority of the railroad over 2 days. Many high-end officials sat down and talked about the many aspects of the upcoming sale between the 2 railroads. The special ran from Cedar Rapids to Cedar Falls via Oelwein on the 1st day. The 2nd day featured the run from Cedar Falls to Manly.
Day 2 wasn't as good for light as the 1st day, but the prime shot was here at Rockford. The officials get a slow good look at the bridge over the Shell Rock River. The train has roughly 25 miles to go before Manly, where the tour will be done.

Here's Go Ahead London's E140 - SN60 BZM standing at Canning Town Station, before running back on the 147 to Ilford. After the replacement of the 118, a fair amount of Enviro 400 E40Ds that operated on the route were transferred to other GAL garages, including River Road (RR) and Bexleyheath (BX). Some were used as spare parts for the existing Enviro 400 Tridents, including panels and whatnot.

This fig was originally an apoc survivor but It evolved into some kind of military PMC dude. Still super bad-ass and one of my fav figs. Enjoy!
Mackenzie Northern was a company operated by RailLink Canada that in 1998 took over CN lines in extreme northern Alberta and reaching into the Northwest Territories. It was quite a chore to get up here as even from Havre, Montana, to this area is 900 miles! This was in my crazier dayz as we tried to make even further north and just missed getting a train at the border with the Northwest Territories this day. No cell phones, not much for maps, and no satellite pictures to aid us. Just good old fashioned exploration as there was no networking info to go by because not many were dumb enough to go up here for train pictures.
This track was built in the early 1960s as the Great Slave Lake Railway and is the northernmost trackage of the contiguous North American railway system. I think there were two GP9s lettered for the GSL but for the most part it was always an arm of the CN until the sale to RailLink. After increases in traffic brought on by the tar sands oil discoveries in these parts CN repurchased the line in 2006.
Here is a Grimshaw to High Level, Alberta, run behind a BL20-2 and a leased CN GP38-2. The BL20-2 is one of three that were EMD demonstrators rebuilt in 1992 from BN GP9s. EMD was attempting to crack into the GEEP rebuild market. Not much interest was generated by these BL20s and I'm not sure where they are now. RailLink even operated an SD18 and a pair of F-Units up here, but of course those had been recently moved out just prior to our visit.
Half way up the line was the northern most reaches of grain growing country and the tank cars in the train are loads of fuel used by consumers in the secluded Northwest Territories. For the most part the track was good for 10 MPH with not much but a gravel roadbed underneath.

At the start of the First World War in 1914 the British Government needed effective communications with frontline troops and replaced messengers on horses with despatch riders on motorcycles. Several models were tested for suitability, and the Triumph Model H was selected. With the rear wheel driven by a belt, the Model H was fitted with a 499 cc air-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder engine. It was also the first Triumph not to be fitted with pedals, so was a true motorcycle.
Engine differences from the previous Model A included a single cam wheel with two cams replacing separate cam wheels for the inlet and exhaust valve, and new design of cylinder casting. Valve head diameter was enlarged, and the valves were spaced further apart. The Model H was fitted with a Sturmey-Archer three-speed countershaft gearbox operated by a hand gear change lever.
More than 30,000 Triumph Model H motorcycles had been produced by the end of the war in 1918. The Triumph Engineering Co Ltd had been using the advertising slogan Trusty Triumph since 1910 and the Model H became known as 'The Trusty' as it proved reliable in wartime conditions, despite a weakness in the front fork spring. This was prone to break on rough ground, so despatch riders would strap a leather belt around it as a precaution.
This 1915 Triumph Model H and beautiful wicker sidecar is one of more than 1,000 British machines on display in the National Motorcycle Museum.

When you look at this the left side of the shot it looks really dark. I'm pretty sure that's my inexperience with the CP filter showing through. The filter works pretty good in the CORRECT situation, unfortunately this wasn't it!
