Bristol and Bath were the destinations for two steam trains on Wednesday 6th October 2021. Saphos Trains ran a trip from the Severn Valley Railway with 46100 Royal Scot, and Belmond British Pullman with 25028 Clan Line from London Victoria. Due to cattle on the line near Oxford 46100 was held up so the Merchant Navy arrived first. While Royal Scot started the return journey on time, unfortunately Clan Line encountered shunting problems due to re-signalling at Temple Meads so was 84 minutes late leaving Bristol Temple Meads and 115 minutes late by the time she reached Bathampton after letting 3 IET's through. National Rail managed to do a reroute via Richmond so the tour was only 55 minutes late back to Victoria in the end.

With the UK gripped by a national rail strike affecting nearly all train operating companies The Great Western Christmas Envoy was the only train stopping at Bath Spa all day. Steam locomotive 70000 Britannia can be seen here pulling away from Bath Spa heading through Oldfield Park having just crossed back onto the correct line after taking advantage and running bang line through Bath Spa to drop passengers off. We were very lucky a freight train stopped before the station to let us all have a view as the red light meant he should have stopped through the station blocking our view.

Tubular Bells is the debut studio album by the British musician Mike Oldfield, released on 25 May 1973 as the first album on Virgin Records. It comprises two mostly instrumental tracks. Oldfield, who was 19 years old when it was recorded, played almost all the instruments.

The most important promotion for the record came from an unexpected source, when the introduction to Part One was chosen to feature in the film The Exorcist, which was released in the United States in December 1973 and in European cinemas in March 1974. According to British film critic Mark Kermode, the decision to include the music was the result of pure chance – director William Friedkin had decided to scrap the original score by Lalo Schifrin and was looking for music to replace it. Friedkin was visiting the offices of Ahmet Ertegun, president of Atlantic Records (which distributed Tubular Bells in the US), and picking up a white label of the album from the selection of records in Ertegun's office, he put it on the record player and instantly decided that the music would be perfect for the movie. Although the introduction only features briefly in two scenes in the movie, it has become the track most commonly associated with it. Oldfield has stated that he did not want to see the film because he believed he would find it too frightening.

Happy 50th Anniversary, Mike Oldfield!

In 2002, the IMA completed the restoration of Oldfields–Lilly House & Gardens as the first phase of the IMA’s three-part, $220-million institutional expansion. At the center of Oldfields is the three-story Lilly House, a French-chateau-style mansion restored to the 1930s time period of the Lilly family occupancy. The estate also includes a formal garden, a tree-lined allée with border gardens, and a one-acre hillside ravine garden.

A black and white version of the Almenara Castle (Puebla de Almenara, Cuenca, Spain) photograph, taken just before sundown.

This is an impressive and highly evocative medieval stone fortress from the 14th century, strategically located in the mountains of the "Sierra Jarameña", also known as "Sierra de Almenara" (from the Arabic "manārah", "a place where there is light," noting its possible origin as a signal watchtower) near the town of Puebla de Almenara (Cuenca, Spain). Over time it passed through the hands of the Knights Order of Santiago, the Infante Don Juan Manuel and the powerful Mendoza family. In the sixteenth century, it belonged to the Princess of Eboli, Doña Ana de Mendoza, who had inherited from his father, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. In the early 17th. Century there had already been testimonies indicating its abandoned, neglected and deteriorated state. Today, it is in a sorry state, a clear mark of inefficiency on the part of the responsible administration, highlighting the disdain for our historical heritage and the lack of zeal for its conservation from it.
