French Journal Day 97 (Travel Diary Day 177)
Toilets in foreign countries confuse me. In the Korean middle school where I taught there were toilets with electronic seats. It was actually a heated seat for those cold winter months. It sounds nice but you never know if it’s warm from the electronic gadgets or if someone’s just been sitting on it. A vast array of buttons lay to the side of the seat.
Standing looking at the gadget-toilet on one of my first days, I tested the buttons out…or more specifically, I tested one button out. I pressed the bidet button and to my surprise, a violent torrent of water came flying towards me. I tried to get out of the way but alas, I was too slow. Drenched in toilet water, I stealthy made my way through the school halls and to my office where I could dry off under a heater.
In Dubai airport I was sitting on the toilet (nice thought, I know) and I noticed a spray on the wall next to me. Thinking it was a wonderful idea to have a bum-cleaning fluid to give yourself that extra-shine, I tested it out. It was bleach, I later learned, for cleaning the seat before you sat down. It burned so badly that I couldn’t sit down for an hour.
Along the same lines, yesterday in the supermarket I found myself in a quandary. I need the toilet but knew that the toilets didn’t have seats on them – just a cold, urine stained surface – it was hover-time. I was in such a hurry that I forget to check if there was any toilet paper, which there wasn’t.
I’d already committed myself at this point. Then it hit me, I remembered that Rachel gave me a full packet of tissues. They were in my jacket pocket. They came in very handy. It was only a couple of minutes later when I realised that they were special tissues coated in Olbas oil. Flashbacks of 2010′s Dubia ring-sting came back to me. I walked around the supermarket as if I had a banana up some place it didn’t belong, eyes watering.

This is a similar image I published a while ago, but processed and cropped very differently. Mt Bromo is such amazing scene that it always looks surreal, even in unedited photos.

The earliest archaeological evidence from Olba in Cilicia Tracheia dates back to the Hellenistic period. From this period onwards, the acropolis hill which is 1040 m. above sea level was fortified by a system of city wall and towers. A considerable increase in the building activities can be observed beginning from the Roman Imperial rule in the region in the first century A.D. . As in many centers in the Roman province’s public buildings such as the nymphaeum (fountain house) the aqueduct and a number of cisterns mark the systematic use of water in daily life and agricultural activities.
The remains of the theater, workshops and houses in Olba reflect a lively urban life in the city in Roman times. Apart from the public burials (rock cut tombs, sarcophagi and independent tomb structures) sharing the same architectural characteristics in Rough Cilicia are located in Olba. The remains of many churches and a monastery mark the continuing importance of Olba in the Early Christian period, Olba according to the Christian documents was represented as a episcopal center during the important councils.

I have to say, the worst International Salon ever! You don't get told what mark you got. You don't get an email with a report card, you just have to keep looking at the website then trawl through to find your name and see whether you got an acceptance or not.
I must say though, they are very loyal to their own people! Haha!
