French Journal Day 97 (Travel Diary Day 177)

Toilets in foreign countries confuse me. In the Korean middle school where I taught there were toilets with electronic seats. It was actually a heated seat for those cold winter months. It sounds nice but you never know if it’s warm from the electronic gadgets or if someone’s just been sitting on it. A vast array of buttons lay to the side of the seat.

Standing looking at the gadget-toilet on one of my first days, I tested the buttons out…or more specifically, I tested one button out. I pressed the bidet button and to my surprise, a violent torrent of water came flying towards me. I tried to get out of the way but alas, I was too slow. Drenched in toilet water, I stealthy made my way through the school halls and to my office where I could dry off under a heater.

In Dubai airport I was sitting on the toilet (nice thought, I know) and I noticed a spray on the wall next to me. Thinking it was a wonderful idea to have a bum-cleaning fluid to give yourself that extra-shine, I tested it out. It was bleach, I later learned, for cleaning the seat before you sat down. It burned so badly that I couldn’t sit down for an hour.

Along the same lines, yesterday in the supermarket I found myself in a quandary. I need the toilet but knew that the toilets didn’t have seats on them – just a cold, urine stained surface – it was hover-time. I was in such a hurry that I forget to check if there was any toilet paper, which there wasn’t.

I’d already committed myself at this point. Then it hit me, I remembered that Rachel gave me a full packet of tissues. They were in my jacket pocket. They came in very handy. It was only a couple of minutes later when I realised that they were special tissues coated in Olbas oil. Flashbacks of 2010′s Dubia ring-sting came back to me. I walked around the supermarket as if I had a banana up some place it didn’t belong, eyes watering.

Today’s Photo – Mt. Bromo Panorama

This is a similar image I published a while ago, but processed and cropped very differently. Mt Bromo is such amazing scene that it always looks surreal, even in unedited photos.
