Den 5. mars 1866 stod stortingsbygningen ferdig. Før dette holdt stortingsrepresentantene hus i Christiania Kathedralskole i Dronningens gate (1814–1854), og deretter ble festsalen i Universitetet i Oslo benyttet (1854–1866).
Stortingsbygningen er tegnet av den svenske arkitekten Emil Victor Langlet. Bygningen er preget av historismen og symboliserer åpenhet og demokrati, med to armer i form av fløyer som strekker seg ut mot folket. I rotunden i midten ligger selve hjertet, stortingssalen.
I årene 1951–1959 ble det foretatt store ombyggingsarbeider. Under ledelse av arkitekt Nils Holter ble stortingssalen utvidet, og trappehallen og vandrehallen kom til. Samtidig ble en helt ny og moderne kontorbygning reist mot Akersgata.
