Standing in the middle of the pier at Tybee Island, GA, I snapped this photo which is actually three photos combined into this HDR. This was taken first thing in the morning which provided the great sun light seen on the inside of the pier columns.

Three bracketed photos were taken with a tripod mounted Nikon D5000 and combined with Photomatix to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS4.

On my first day and only day in Vancouver. It was raining off and on all day but wasn't very cold. I spent most of the day on the Hop On and Hop Off Bus.

I’m home now relaxing and enjoying the warmer weather 😁

Steve, the owner of this all-original 1922 Liberty invited me to take photos in a nice autumn setting on October 16, 2012. He picked an awesome location and we spent an enjoyable afternoon posing the car in various settings around this pastoral farm west of Dexter in southeast Michigan.

IN the city of Ballarat by the end of September, nearly a 1000 miners were digging for gold on the Ballarat field - By 1853, there were more than 20,000 miners of many nationalities working on the field.

In that same year, 10,000,000 grams of gold were transported under police escort to the Melbourne Treasury. Probably as much again was never recorded but sold secretly and illegally. Over the next four (4) years, more than 77,700,000 grams reached Melbourne under escort. On June 10th 1858, the great Welcome Nugget was found. It weighed 68,956 grams and contained an estimated 68,272 grams of pure gold.

Ballarat's last mine closed down in 1918. The total recorded yield from the Ballarat Goldfield amounted to 20,592,000 Troy ounces (Ballarat Historical Society Publication No. 1) and based on a gold price of $A500 per ounce the total value would be around $10,000,000,000. A remarkable figure when it is realised that a large amount of the gold discovered in the district was never recorded.

Ballarat was the scene of Australia's most famous civic insurrection. On 3 December 1854 at Eureka, miners clashed with police and detachments of the 12th and 40th regiments. In all, 28 men were killed and a large number wounded.

Ballarat was proclaimed a township in 1852, created a municipality in 1855, a borough in 1863, and was proclaimed a City on 9 September 1870.

I hit the road with a new buddy I made on Instagram this morning. Last night we were trying to decide between one of the waterfall hikes in the Gorge or something else. We eventually settled on trying to locate a hidden lava tube near Carson, WA that we had both heard about and see photos of. After some back road adventuring and a quick quarter mile hike we found our hole in the ground and wandered in. Inside we found a huge, cavernous, cathedral shaped lava tube with striated walls and sections of floor alternating between high piles of boulder and smooth sand and cooled lava. We spent some time shooting long exposures, painting the walls with our headlamps. There's no darkness quite like being 1/4 mile under the surface of the earth and turning all your lights off.

Dome of Sound in Styria, Austria at sunset under an autumnal sky. The Dome is a landscape and sound sculpture created by local artists in Pischelsdorf and was installed in the year 2011. Lee 0,9 softgrad and Lee Big Stopper.

The rays are actually clouds lit by the setting sun on the left that were moving towards me. By using a Lee Big Stopper and an exposure of 4 minutes they changed into rays. I also have a version with the clouds not moving, but i like this version a tad more.

MOUTH of TRUTH

IIn the portico of the Paleochristian church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, at the foot of the Aventine hills, a Roman statue is conserved that has attracted the attention and curiosity of tourists from all over the world. It is the "Bocca della Verità", an ancient stone mask from the Classical period that represents a river god with an open mouth, wide eyes and a flowing mane of hair.

The reason for its unshakeable fame is a rather macabre legend associated with the mask since ancient times. If a liar puts their hand inside its mouth, they will lose it.

This legend probably originates from Roman times. It is said that the rich wife of a Roman noble was accused of adultery. The woman denied the accusations, but her husband wanted to put her to the test by making her hand inside the stone mouth. Knowing perfectly well that she was lying, the woman used a very clever strategy. In front of a group of curious bystanders who had gathered around the Mouth of Truth, the man who was actually her lover embraced her and kissed her. She pretended that she didn't know him and accused him of being a madman and the crowd chased him away.

When she put her hand into the mouth, the woman declared that she had never kissed any other man apart from her husband and the poor madman who had just kissed her. In this way she was certain that she hadn't lied and her hand was saved. The betrayed husband saved her honour, but the Mouth of Truth lost its credibility and it is said that since that day it no longer carried out its function as a right and unappeasable judge.

Even today, this ancient mask is the cause of queues of tourists who line up outside the beautiful Paleochristian church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The thrill of the risk is evidently too strong and you honestly can't resist putting your hand inside this harmless, but unsettling stone face and hope for the best!

The simple, no-frills lines of the Orthodox Church do not distract from communication with the Almighty

You leave in a taxi

Early morning

Come find me and break me

Then goodbye

All of a sudden

Your back with us again

Hello again

I see you've been falling

But here we go

We're on our own again

Whatever it takes to get you back

In my powder room plan

But you'll take my ideas

And you'll use them against me

I'll do everything I can

Whatever it takes to get you back

In my powder room plan

But you'll take my ideas

And you'll use them against me

But anyway

Wrapped in music

Scared I'd be sick

I watched you dancing

And fell deeper

And so we land in the powder room

Full of mirrors so there's more of you

But all to soon your all on your ways

And then again we go

Wer'e on our own again

Whatever it takes to get you back

In my powder room plan

But you'll take my ideas

And you'll use them against me

I'll do everything I can

Whatever it takes to get you back

In my powder room plan

But you'll take my ideas

And you'll use them against me

But anyway

Its over

Ah don't you tell me

That it's all over

That it's all over

It's all over her

Whatever it takes to get you back

In my powder room plan

Whatever it takes to get you back

In my powder room plan

Between mother and child

The constant battle of the photographer and the waves. Trying to catch just the right motions, without getting wet, is really just foolish. I think if I had any advice for a new seascape photographer, it would be, expect to get wet, use a ten stop filter, and just play with different shutter speeds until you're consistently getting something that you like, and don't get your $5,000 camera wet with sea water. Because salt water and electronics ... well they just don't mix. I was shooting an XT1 next to a rock once in San Diego and took the equivalent of a bucket of sea water on the camera. It still worked fine, weather sealed, but over time things began sticking. Doesn't matter the camera, sea water is eventual death. It will also probably kill your tripod. The price we pay I suppose.

I like this shot because I was alone this night. No one else there. Such a beautiful place, and wonderful soft light to be alone. I fully expected the usual hordes. No one. Not sure why, don't care, it was relaxing to not have to worry about being in anyone's way and not have to stake out my spot. I think I love freedom in general, so when expecting to be bogged down, it's nice to have wings and be able to flutter a bit.

Luckily the sun rises at a reasonable time these days, that and the convenience of having this tree only two miles from where I live meant only a short but hazardous journey in wellies to capture this cracking dead tree...

(From Wikipedia)

Dhammayangyi Temple is a Buddhist temple located in Bagan, Myanmar. Largest of all the temples in Bagan, the Dhammayan as it is popularly known was built during the reign of King Narathu (1167-1170). Narathu, who came to the throne by assassinating his father Alaungsithu and his elder brother, presumably built this largest temple to atone for his sins.

The Dhammayangyi is the widest temple in Bagan, and is built in a plan similar to that of Ananda Temple. Burmese chronicles state that while the construction of the temple was in the process, the king was assassinated by some Indians and thus the temple was not completed. Sinhalese sources however indicate that the king was killed by Sinhalese invaders.

The temple's interior is bricked up for unknown reasons, thus only the four porches and the outer corridors are accessible.

No longer based out of Pointe St-Charles since this past Tuesday (!!), CN 500 enters the Port of Montreal with class leader CN 4700 and CN 4941 for power. CN 500 and CN 596 (previously the afternoon PSC switcher) are now based out of Southwark Yard. One plus for railfans is that means that CN 500 can end up with different power, as 3-4 local sets are based at Southwark.

Numerous other operational changes have taken place this week at Southwark Yard, among them:

-CN 321 originating at Taschereau Yard

-CN 527 being called a few hours earlier

-CN 522 no longer running to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu (CN 525 goes there at night)
