Architects of Darkness: The Microbes That Built the Deep-Sea World

 

In the depths of the bright oceans lies an environment of massive pressure, volcanic heat and continuous darkness - yet the creatures of this environment thrive and prosper. Most notably, deep sea extremophiles such as bacteria and archaea have been modified to adapt to the areas reached by Solar energy. Using something called chemosynthesis instead of photosynthesis, these tiny creatures convert the toxic gases of Hydrogen Sulfide and Methane into energy that is usable and creates the basis for multiple ecosystems that depend on Hydrothermal Vents and Cold Seeps. The unique traits and features of these microbes, including specialized enzymes, specialized membranes, and DNA repair systems, make them capable of functioning in the extreme conditions that would kill most forms of life that we know about, therefore demonstrating the limits of life as we know it, and the endurance of Life as we know it.

 

These microbes are not just surviving their harsh environment, they are creating an entire world. Giant Tubeworms, blind shrimp, and Methane Hating clams, are just some of the animals that inhabit the communities of hydrothermal vents that exist on the ocean floor, which resemble alien metropolises. By researching the organisms that inhabit these communities, scientists are able to see how early Earth was structured, how Life began, and how Life might exist on other planets, such as Europa and Enceladus. Thus, deep-sea microbes represent not only the builders of the dark but also the ocean’s map toward finding Life beyond our own Planet.
