Modern Whimsical Nursery

Back Garden - the only other time I've seen one was last year at Dene Park, when I found one guarding it's young in a web.

The circles on the wall are paper. The brown inserts in the shelves are cardboard covered in pretty paper and ribbons and glued into place. I got the little hanging plaque at Value Village. The curtains are leftovers of Ikea curtains that I hemmed from the kitchen. Got the shelf above the window at a garage sale. Round "pillow" is the quilt from the crib set tied up with a ribbon. All of this done on a very low budget... obviously.

Fascinating to be able to watch the progress of this batch of baby Nursery Web Spiders. They emerged from the egg sack several days ago and now wander around in the big "nursery" web during the day - under the watchful eye of Mom. But in the evening, they form one or two big balls, like this. I speculate that this is a way to make them look less edible to nighttime predators.

Nearly 3 acres of display gardens are currently under development at Roraima Nursery. Combining a unique terrain with innovative landscaping concepts using rocks and industrial artifacts, the gardens will showcase how cacti and succulents can be combined with other plants such as palms and pines to create a beautiful and dramatic garden that is both low in maintenance and requires little water..

.

The gardens will be open to the public from Saturday 29th of April 2017..

History.

Roraima Nursery was formerly known as Lara Plant Farm. Established in the 1960s, Lara Plant Farm was well known throughout Geelong and many people have fond memories of visiting the Farm with their parents, playing on the trampolines in the then carpark playground, and visiting the birds in the large aviaries built throughout the retail area..

A fauna park was established in the early 1990s. However, the recession that soon followed took a heavy toll and by the time new owners Lyle and Cheryl Filippe took over in 2001 the fauna park had closed and the Nursery was in need of a major overhaul. Removing the old aviaries and creating a more open shop area surrounded by garden beds, the new Nursery is now vibrant and beautiful, once again delighting all who visit..

Mount Roraima.

.

Situated on the borders of Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil, Mount Roraima is a famous example of tepui, or table-top mountain. Separated from the surrounding plateau by nearly vertical cliffs, the flat top of Mount Roraima remained a mystery to explorers from the time of the discovery of the mountain by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 16th Century until the cliffs were finally scaled in the 1880s. The mountain inspired the famous novel "The Lost World" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in which explorers reached the flat top to discover a haven of dinosaurs still living..

.

When Nursery owner Lyle Filippe climbed Mount Roraima in 1998, there were no dinosaurs to be seen! but he was delighted to see many plants that are unique to the mountain top, and beautiful outcroppings of rock and crystal. Returning to Australia Lyle was inspired to name his nursery after the beautiful mountain..

Roraima Nursery has the widest variety of cacti and succulents in the Geelong region. Some of the more popular genera of cacti we stock are: Mammillaria, Notocactus, Oreocereus, Gymnocalycium, and Lobivia. Among our succulent range we have Aloe, Agave, Crassula, Gasteria, Haworthia, Echeveria, Sedum, Faucaria, Yucca, Cotyledon, and Aeonium. .

.

Some of the more unusual plants among our range include Dioscorea elephantipes (Elephants foot), Dracaena draco (Dragon Tree), and Furcraeas. We also stock Brachychiton rupestris (Queensland Bottle Tree).

.

We are currently building an extensive collection of cacti and succulents (not open for public viewing) from which an even larger variety of plants will soon be available for purchase. These will be of particular interest to collectors and will be available through mail order or online, or from the Nursery directly.

My husband and I just returned from 5 days in the Raleigh, North Carolina area. We went down mainly to see an exhibit of Ansel Adams photography and an exhibit of the Renaissance art of Venice at the North Carolina Museum of Art. We were lucky to connect with Flickr friend Ira Tucker ( I met him last year when a friend and I were going to Myrtle Beach) and spend a wonderful day with him and his wife. We went to the JC Raulston Arboretum, Little Theatre Rose Garden, lunch and then Plant Delights Nursery, and more! He is the perfect tour guide for the gardens in the area because he spends so much time there. He knows what is in bloom when and where to get the best shots.

Before we left, we met Ira at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens this morning for yet another photo op tour.

Thanks again Ira for another great day and evening! We really enjoyed every minute!

More pics to come!!!

This Halloween, Poppy decided she will be a nurse, taking care of her little "Sylvanian Families" baby animals. And yes she LOVES her job! Look at that tiny milk bottle, so adorable.

Poppy asked me can she wear this outfit forever but i turned her down cause i still want her to be a 60s MOD girl haha ❤️

Here's a nursery web spider (Pisaura mirabilis) for you. It was pretty tiny and was sitting at my basement wall.

I took my chance to shoot it with my reversed Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and an external flash.

I chose f/13 as aperture.

Magnification ratio: ~ 4:1

I wanted to get out of the office on my lunch hour today so I decided to go explore nearby Soscol Ferry Road. I noticed a country lane with the gate open, so that’s where I went walking. It turned out to be the entrance to an old vineyard, with an apiary of sorts and a nursery area. It appeared that whoever works here was also out on their lunch break.

The males of these spiders will often offer the ladies a fly in an attempt to stop her eating him after mating.A clever strategy!(it wouldn't work for me, if I was her,Id eat the fly and eat him too,ha ha!!)

Baby #2's Modern Nursery

:)

We spent this weekend painting Puff's nursery and assembling the furniture. I have to say, I am super proud of us and how it turned out. Ian and I are terrible when it comes to projects and doing things on time - we tend to be late, slack off, screw around, procrastinate, etc. I expected it to take all weekend just to get the room painted and the furniture together, but we got it all finished on Saturday, which meant that all we had to do on Sunday was arrange everything in the room. We also put the bedding in the crib, to get the full effect. ;) Today I started washing and putting away the rest of Puff's stuff - blankets, bibs, clothes, etc. and did some general organizing. It's safe to say that the "third bedroom" is now officially, the Nursery. All it needs is a baby!

I forced myself to take some photos today, to show off the room and my ever-expanding physique. I am now 35 weeks along, so we are definitely in the home stretch. (Which is good, because I'm also really sick of being pregnant.) ;)

My wife and model, Janice, holds an object she found hanging from a bush in the backyard. It appears to be a nest for insect larvae, fashioned out of leaves. If you hold it in the palm of your hand, you can feel vibrations, probably from babies who are almost ready to come out.

Or the single baby of a large insect?

We've placed the mysterious nursery in a glass jar so we'll be sure to see what bursts forth.
