The last couple numbers to be applied to the now 3391 sit on the work bench and will soon be placed on the tail end of the unit. These contractors who did our first 3 orange units were a great group of guys and did some great work, even though we didn't want to see the GLLX 3001 get painted.

Taken on 29-10-2007 (just after this shot and just before this one) from the very rear seat of a Boeing 737-800 - FR925 BLK-DUB - as we climbed up out of Blackpool Airport to return to Ireland after Cormac's stag weekend.

It was lovely and sunny but blustery afternoon there.

From the wikipedia:

Blackpool is a seaside town in Lancashire, England. Lying along the coast of the Irish Sea, it has a population of 142,900. Blackpool rose to prominence as a major centre of tourism during the 19th century, particularly for the inhabitants of northern mill towns

Blackpool is heavily dependent on tourism. In what is often regarded as its heyday (1900-1950), Blackpool thrived as the factory workers of northern England took their annual holidays there en masse. Any photograph from that era shows crowds of tourists on the beach and promenade. Blackpool was also a preferred destination of visitors from Glasgow and remains so to this day. Reputedly, the town still has more hotel and B&B beds than the whole of Portugal. The town went into decline when cheap air travel arrived in the 1960s and the same workers decamped to the Mediterranean coast resorts due to competitive prices and the more reliable weather. Today Blackpool remains the most popular seaside resort in the UK, however the town has suffered a serious drop in numbers of visitors which has fallen from 17 million in 1992 to 10 million today. Similarly Blackpool Pleasure Beach remains the country's most popular free attraction with 6 million visitors a year but has lost over a million visitors since 1998. Today, many visitors stay for the weekend rather than for a week at a time.

Blackpool boasts some important landmarks, most of which appeared originally as part of the flourishing tourist industry.

* Blackpool Tower, opened in 1894; it has been a dominant landmark of the Blackpool skyline since that time. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower of Paris, France, it is 158m (518ft 9in) tall. Beneath the tower is a complex of leisure facilities, entertainment venues and restaurants, including the world famous Tower Ballroom and Tower Circus.

* North Pier - The northernmost of Blackpool's three piers. It includes a small shopping arcade, a small tramway and the North Pier Theatre toward the end of the pier. The pier end also used to have a helicopter pad, but this was damaged at Christmas 1997 by a windstorm and collapsed into the Irish Sea.

* Central Pier - The middle pier, includes a large ferris wheel and shops.

* South Pier - The southernmost pier. Almost directly opposite the Pleasure Beach, it houses a theme park.

* Pleasure Beach Blackpool - a famous theme park. Rides include the Pepsi Max Big One, which is the largest roller coaster in the theme park and one of the largest in the UK.

* The Winter Gardens is a large entertainment and conference venue in the town centre. Includes the Opera House (one of the largest theatres in Europe), Pavilion Theatre, Empress Ballroom, Spanish Hall, Arena and Olympia.

A controversial aspect of Blackpool's night-life is its hen and stag parties. Brides- or bridegrooms-to-be and their friends, often dressed alike in absurd or risqué attire, roam the town's many bars and clubs getting increasingly drunk. Their rowdy behaviour is claimed to discourage family visitors and has led to complaints from hotel and guest house owners keen to attract a more upmarket clientele.

I obviously cannot possibly comment on that last statement :-)

This is 5 in the number series. I realized yesterday that I hadn't taken any in a while.

I'm considering doing a 365, thanks to alexstoddard for suggesting it. =]

I really like how this turned out. Yes, I did tear old pages out of a vintage book. Shame on me.

No, it was not easy getting these pages to stick. The bees were buzzing around me as I listened to "The XX" on my iPod. These pages fell down incessantly. I even used duct tape.

I'm considering doing a paint series since I love to use paint so much in photos. I am already doing two other series. But this one would be a lot of fun. And, of course, colorful.

Kodak Aerocolor 125

Pentax IQZoom 700

Forced focal plane distortion on 35mm film. This old Mack truck has seen better days, but I'm going to preserve its memory here! It's been resting here so long that a tree has grown up through it. I took the shot through the mess of growth with contrasting shadows and a varied focus for a distortion depth perspective.

Shot taken with camera listed below also in photostream:

Canon Prime FD 50mm F1.4 lens - Breech Lock - Chrome Nose

Kodak T-Max 35mm film - 100 Speed

Hope you guys are enjoying the Boneyard Series and these old pieces fading away in their resting places! Once someone's pride and joy are now left behind...

Thank you for visiting and for your kind comments, faves, and friendships!

in the 1970's, chinese-american architect i.m. pei heard of a story that a church in the philippines was built of steel and that gustave eiffel had designed it. architect pei then arranged a trip to the philippines and visited san sebastian church in manila. he later confirmed that the church structure was in fact designed by eiffel.

Don Genaro Palacios (architect of the edifice), Filipino artist Lorenzo Guerrero (designed the confessionals, pulpit and altars), Filipino artist Lorenzo Rocha and his students (painted the interior of the church to resemble marble and jasper), and Henri Oidtmann Comanpay (stained glass).

Nourlangie Rock (Burrunggui), Nawurlandja & Nanguluwurr– Kakadu National Park

Burrunggui (sometimes spelled Burrunguy, previously called Nourlangie Rock) is located in an outlying sandstone formation of the Arnhem Land Escarpment within the Kakadu National Park which is in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is the traditional Country of the Gun-djeihmi speaking people and according to Traditional Owners, was shaped by Ancestral beings in the creation period of the Dreaming. It was included on the World Heritage Register. Kakadu National Park is included on UNESCO the World Heritage List due to its exceptional natural and cultural values.

Europeans were first in the area of Nourlangie Rock in about 1845, after Ludwig Leichhardt’s explorations passed through the area. By the 1880s, European buffalo and buffalo shooters had moved into the area, and local Traditional Owners joined their shooting parties. Traditional owners told the buffalo shooters about the Dreaming stories at Burrungui and the many names of all the natural features of the landscapes. Chaloupka argues that the Europeans couldn’t remember all of the names, and called the area ‘Nourlangie’, a confused pronunciation of the name of the area generally called ‘Nawulandja’.

There are a number of shelters in amongst this large outcrop. The shelters contain amazing paintings that represent the Aboriginal Dreaming, with depictions of Namandi spirits, both male and female figures and one with six fingers on each hand. Many paintings in the Burrungui area also depict European items and introduced animals. Pigments are mostly of yellow, white and red ochre, with red ochre being used as a chalk to draw on the rock surface in some places. Early art at the site is evidenced in handprints on the rock in red pigment, or gars being flung on the rock. The paintings at Burrungui are in the Mimi and x-ray style, with Mimi being older and representative of Dreaming Ancestral beings. There are even depictions of Thylacines (Tasmanian Tigers), known to have been extinct in the area for at least 3,500 years. Superimpositioning of many animals such as kangaroos layered over one another, assist in the establishment of a temporal sequence at the site, however there appears to still be much research and work needed at the site for this to occur.

The rock art faces many threats to its survival, including tourists and destruction from natural processes such as ant trail that go across the older panels at Burrungui, water damage and wasp nesting. Interpretive signage is present at the art sites to assist visitors in understanding these rock art treasures and the importance of their preservation.

The Anbangbang Shelter drawings are some of the most famous in the National Park. One of the intricate paintings in Anbangbang shelter was created by Najombolmi, a renowned artist of the Bardmardi clan, who painted the images with his friends in the 1963-64 wet season. Najombolmi lived between 1895 and 1967 and is thought to have created around 604 paintings at 46 sites in Arnhem Land. Najomboli was also known as ‘Barramundi Charlie’ by some.

X-ray paintings are naturalistic depictions of animals that show the internal organs and other anatomical features, which were mostly painted by Aboriginal people in red and white ochre. One such painting created by Najombolmi depicts anthropomorphic figures of Ancestral beings such as Namarrgon (lightning man), painted in the x-ray style using European blue, that Chaloupka said came from the blue pigment put in washing by Europeans as a toner to keep clothes white. Paintings and rock art such as this among the only rock art that provides absolute dating of when it was produced, as rock art is notoriously difficult to date.

Anbangbang was excavated by archaeologists in 1981 and was found to have first been occupied more than 6000 years ago, with some occasional use being up to 20,000 years ago and with intensification of site use occurring between 800 and 1200 years ago when the nearby lagoon was fully formed

Najombolmi also painted at Nangawulurr Shelter (formerly spelled Nangaloar). It is located on the northern side of Burrungui (Nourlangie Rock). Nangawulurr shelter features many styles of Aboriginal rock art that appear in other sites around the region in one area. It includes hand prints, Mimi figures in ceremonial dress, Ancestral beings, x-ray animals and dolphin-like creatures depicted in red ochre. It also features a white depiction of a two-masted sailing ship with an anchor and dingy, which may relate to the early European buffalo shooters in the area). Unfortunately due to the fame of the site for its amazing rock art, in the early 1970s tourists came and destroyed some features and even stole Aboriginal Ancestral Remains from the site.

Anbangbang Billabong

Anbangbang Billabong lies in the shadow of Nourlangie Rock within Kakadu National Park and is a good place to view a wide range of wildlife. Large numbers of water fowl and wading birds inhabit the billabong and many wallabies can be found grazing around the water’s edge. There is a walking trail around the circumference of Anbangbang billabong with many picnic areas. The Anbangbang Billabong is overlooked by the Nawurlandja and Nourlangie plateaus. In the wet season, it is fed by runoff from these plateaus, as well as overflow from Nourlangie Creek, however during the dry season it is cut off.

Like much of Kakadu, Anbangbang Billabong is home to a particularly large variety of bird life. The fluctuating water levels draw waterfowl such as Magpie Geese, Pelicans, Darters, Spoonbills and Brolga. Other fauna known to frequent the billabong include Wallabies, File Snakes, Long-necked Turtles, Dingoes and Goannas.

Mangroves lining the billabong support populations of Freshwater mussel. Adjacent woodlands play host to a different ecosystem again. The nearby Nawurlandja plateau supports local populations of Short-eared rock-wallaby and Chestnut-quilled rock pigeon, among other species.

The swelling billabong promotes seasonal growth of Sedges, Grasses and Water Lilies, and Freshwater mangrove line the water's edge. Swamp areas support many types of paperbark, in particular the Weeping paperbark, Silver-leaved paperbark and Broad-leaved paperbark.

The woodlands surrounding the billabong are a lush habitat comprising an abundance of plant species. Darwin woollybutt and Darwin Stringybark dominate, with large populations of Fan palms, Kapok, Red Apples, Wattle and Pandanus.

Like much of Kakadu, the Anbangbang Billabong region's climate is monsoonal. The region's aboriginal owners recognize six seasons, however these can be reduced to vastly differing dry and wet seasons where the billabong is respectively depleted and replenished.

I land the disk of our team on the ground. They all step off, and form a line on the street. In front of us, an army of robots marching down the streets. Hovering above is a man in a red and blue costume, with an orange creature on his head. He seems to be using Atlantean tech to fly and holding what looks like a whip or something.

Guy - Hey look, the Fisherman found his pole.

He begins to laugh but stops as he sees no one else is.

Fisherman - Green Lanternsss! I will take my revenge againssst you for taking me captive!

Arthur - Why Atlantis? Why attack there?

Fisherman - I needed an Atlantean, of course. With the stronger durability I will not be detached so easily.

Arthur - An Atlantean? You enslave one of my people!?

Fisherman - Kehehe, This is the end for you all. If you give up now I shall show you mercy.

Arthur - If you think that we will stand down...

I clench my fist, my ring spewing energy. I see Guy and Jess do the same. Aquaman readies his trident and tempest has a blue glow encompass his hands. Mari places her hand on her totem, calling for what looks to be an elephant and Jeff begins erupting lightning from his hands.

John - You've got another thing comin'.

Fisherman - Ssso be it. Attack!

The swarm of Manhunters begin to charge us. Guys starts off our defense with a volley of missiles, followed by a shield to hold them back. Me and Jessica fly forward and begin to fire blasts of energy at the robots, destroying them. As the begin to overrun guys shield, Tempest puts his hands together. A few seconds later the various fire hydrants and manholes burst with water. The water flows towards him, as he begins to form blue water knights.

As Guys shield finally breaks, the Manhunters charge the group. The knights made by Garth begin to fight against the Manhunters as Mari and Aquaman charge. Jeff stays behind them, firing electric blasts towards the group of machines.

Me and Jessica fly down and begin creating constructs to help in the fight against the army. I make an axe and a sword and begin to slash at the robots wiping out around 20 of them. Jessica makes a rope, grabbing a some and bursting them by fighting the rope. Guy is still above, smashing down onto the bots with a hammer, clearing out large groups at a time.

Mari and Aquaman continue to fight on the ground with the water knights but look to be struggling. They are seemingly buried under the amount of enemies in front of them, and try to get free. I fly down and grab the two, bringing them to where Jeff and Tempest are.

Mari - It's not working. There are too many of them.

John - If we can take him down and remove the device relaying commands to the Manhunters, we can win this.

Arthur - If we all just leave to fight him the city is as good as dead!

Jeff - You two go. John can fly you up there, where the two of you can take him down.

John - But what about you guys? We can't just leave you here.

Jeff - It's alright, I have a plan. Tempest when they fly out, I want you to make a bubble of water around us. I'll electrify it so they can't get in.

Jess and Guy both land.

Tempest - Alright everyone gather round.

I create a platform under Aquaman, and begin to fly upward. Once high enough, we see a blue bubble form which soon begins to pulse with electricity. Looks like it's up to is then.

I get us to the building where the Fisherman was standing.

Arthur - He was here minutes ago! I saw him while we discussed the plan.

John - It's alright, my ring can track him down.

I pull up my ring and scan his residue. It begins to compute the coordinates, then reads off a string of numbers.

Arthur - No! We need to leave now!

He almost leaps off the building before I stop him.

John - What? What is it?

Arthur - Those coordinates are Atlantis! It can not have another attack. To may have been lost already. Now let us go!

I oblige, creating a platform under him and flying over the ocean. He leaps off into the water and heads out into the sea. I begin to fly to the coordinates listed on my ring, and once arriving, dive downward. In front of me is a spectacle I never thought I would witness. Atlantis.

Got to a beautiful location last Sunday morning, and surprisingly enough I had the place to myself .Sometimes its nice to have someone with you on location to share the experience (apart from the safety of numbers). I should have got a lot more images than I did, but I must have just inhaled the beauty and tranquility of this place for at least an hour before setting up my tripod. Great cure for a fuzzy head!!

Finally made it onto the island. A combination of the above stats and work commitments defined when I could make the trip.

I know everyone has a slow shutter speed wave on beach shot in their stream but I don't care! I've waited 2 weeks for the right combo of conditions and it paid off. The little patch of sunlight on the water mid shot was the icing. More to come....
