Bookstamp of the Novitiate of the Jesuit Province of Eastern Germany [Ostdeutsche Provinz] at Mittelsteine [now Åšcinawka Åšrednia, Poland]|

*Photographs of bookstamps taken at the Offenbach Archival Depot run by the Office of Military Government, U.S. Zone (Germany). These photographs were taken from books collected at Offenbach which had formerly been seized by the Nazi government. Several albums of photographs exist at the National Archives, Washington as well as in the Seymour Pomrenze Papers at the Center for Jewish History in New York. For more on this project see an explanatory essay here. The book markings here are from Album II, and represent all those identified as being "Western."

For more on the Offenbach records see the NARA guide. For the complete set on Flickr see here. For the digitized raw albums from the Pomrenze papers see the CJH website and also the CJH Flickr account for a selection of Eastern European stamps from Pomrenze collection put together by Melanie Meyers and her fantastic staff.

The digital images are drawn from two sources. Those bearing the tag "M1942" (which are all in black and white) come from NARA microfilm M1942 frames #506-540 [frame numbers included in tags]. The originals are cited as NARA 260-LM-II-F-[Image number]. See the NARA catalog for more. Those images with the tag "Seymour Pomrenze" (in color) come from the albums digitized by the CJH.*

I found this awesome abandoned cash register outside our apartment building. It was probably being thrown away.
