So many numbers and so little time. The boy went to explore some of the floors and when he left, he pushed the remaining floor's buttons. Just so they wouldn't feel so neglected.

A morning visit to the new GST Nature Reserve Clophill Lakes with the Bedfordshire Invertebrate Group on my 78th birthday 24/06/2021 .I had a good day starting early with a reasonably successful moth trap where I managed to ID and record many of the catch. Still nowhere near the numbers usually caught at this time of year. It was quite chilly too.
After a quick bowl of muesli I set off to Clophill Lakes to assist in a biological survey of this new site . It was a fullers earth extraction site and is coming to Greensand Trust after the minerals were exhausted. The day was cool and dull so hunting insects etc was quite quiet but there was enough to keep my interest. The area is vast and we only covered a small part. There were Bee, Common Spotted and Pyramidal Orchids and loads of other good plants and we even heard a very frustrated Cuckoo calling for ages.
I left about 1.30pm and got home to my present and card opening with mixed results with an attempt to do a short "thank you" video for all the donors after receiving video messages this morning from Tommy and Rosie.
I was hoping to get a short nap before going out for supper with Jane but I had a series of phone calls that covered all that period. I was therefore not at my most alert for the rest of the day . After my calamari starter I felt fully satisfied so the huge plate of chunky chips with a 10oz sirloin steak was a challenge that I failed by about 5 Oz so that I shall enjoy a cold beef and horseradish sandwich for my lunch tomorrow. When we got home I am afraid that after a lovely chat with Skye I fell asleep until 10pm and now here I am in bed again .
So tomorrow the eye hospital in the pm for a meeting with the head honcho so hopefully I may get some progress or at least a status update.

Fantastic numbers of birds over high tide on Tuesday, these little birds are always my favourites though! The weather was slightly inclement, so there's a selection of shots in various states of raininess on me blog.

Cordyline stricta grows in large numbers at Raintrees Native and Rainforest Gardens and is endemic to Diamond Beach and the wider Mid North Coast.
Many years ago I purchased a few maroon fruiting cordylines from Dingo Creek Rainforest Nursery at Bobin, NSW. They were sold to me identified as Cordyline stricta at that time. The leaves are slightly broader than the native C. stricta occurring here.
Over the years I've collected lots of Cordyline seed from many different species and grown many cordylines which have since been planted out.
Since neither Cordyline congesta nor Cordyline rubra occur on the Lower Mid North Coast, it appears to me that there is either another maroon fruiting species in the area or else maroon fruit is considered within the colour range for Cordyline stricta. An alternative theory might be that cordyline stricta has hybridised with Cordyline rubra or Cordyline congesta and that hybridised plants or seed was sourced from the north coast and planted in the lower mid north coast area from which local nurseries have grown plants on for sale.
Some of the lower Mid North Coast Cordyline stricta I've come across have quite severe serrations on the leaf so it becomes difficult when faced with a leaf with serrations and maroon fruit to make an identification or to narrow down to which species C. stricta has hybridised with, especially if the leaf takes on some of the attributes of either C. rubra or C. congesta.
The width of the leaf, and the width and shape of the petiole, may provide a better basis for a more accurate identification of some of these maroon fruiting cordylines as the flowers appear quite similar between the species, although an expert may say otherwise.
I would be most interested to hear if others have come across maroon fruiting versions of what superficially might appear to be Cordyline stricta.
Cordyline hybridisation does appear to be common and I've wondered if other hybrids are occurring naturally north of the NSW Mid North Coast.
A wide selection of Australian native Cordylines are growing on Raintrees, except Cordyline sp. 'Mount Banda Banda', including a number of hybrids, mainly with Cordyline stricta.
I suspect that there needs to be some taxonomical work done with cordylines and I welcome any alternate identifications for my images.
