AVIVA ENGLAND ATHLETICS U23 & U20 CHAMPIONSHIPS & World Trials 2010. Taken at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium on Sunday 20th June 2010.

The Mercedes-Benz Superdome (originally Louisiana Superdome and commonly The Superdome) is a domed sports and exhibition venue, located in the Central Business District of New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Plans were drawn up in 1967, by the New Orleans modernist architectural firm of Curtis and Davis. Its steel frame covers a 13-acre (5.3 ha) expanse. Its 273-foot (83 m) dome is made of a lamellar multi-ringed frame and has a diameter of 680 feet (210 m), making it the largest fixed domed structure in the world. It is adjacent to the New Orleans Arena.

Because of the size and location in one of the major tourist destinations in the United States, the Superdome routinely makes the "short list" of candidates being considered for major sporting events, such as the Super Bowl and the Final Four. It is the home stadium of the New Orleans Saints American football team.

In 2005, the Superdome gained international attention of a different type when it housed thousands of people seeking shelter from Hurricane Katrina. The building suffered extensive damage as a result of the storm, and was closed for many months afterward.

The Lidl Run Kildare Events 2013 were held at the Curragh Racecourse, Newbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 12th May 2013. There were three events: a 10KM, a half marathon, and a full marathon. This is a selection of photographs which includes all events. The photographs are taken from the start and finish of the marathon, the finish of the 10KM, and the finish of the half marathon. Due to the large numbers participating we did not manage to photograph everyone - which was not helped by the weather. Congratulations to Jo Cawley and her RunKildare crew for another great event. The weather didn't dampen the spirits of the many happy participants.

Participants: There were approximately 3,000 participants over the 3 race events - there were runners, joggers, and walkers participating.

Course: This is an undulating course with some good flat stretches on the Curragh.

I did a fairly extensive photo shoot with my Fodens the other day. Having dug the Fodens out for the first time in ages I gave them a wash to get rid of eight months’ worth of dust. I wanted something to photograph with the new gear to start and get a feel for it, there are some photographs with the EOS M but most are with the 5D. They will appear repetitive but for my own reasons I have decided to upload most of the shoot.

M462LYL was one of the 400 or so 4000 series gritters that were supplied to the Highways Agency over a period of years to replace the S80 series Fodens, that we had five of. This wagon would have been scrapped along with most of the others but for the intervention of Stuart Kaye. Although it is in exceptional condition so were most of them, regardless, they had to be scrapped and not sold back onto the UK market. A scandalous waste of money, many had been extensively (and expensively) refurbished to a very high standard – total rebuilds – they were still scrapped. A Cummins 325 and six speed auto box makes this wagon very nice to drive empty! I very much doubt that the auto box and gearing would get up our local hills fully loaded and certainly not if pushing a plough. The wagon has covered 85,000 km and other than corrosion caused by salty hands the cab interior is very good.

I bought a second 4000 series, but just the chassis cab. The scrapping contract allowed for chassis or gritter bodies to be sold separately. Once separated the body takes a lot of refitting. There are hundreds of wires in plastic trunking and they just hacked through them, you couldn’t overstate the scale of the job of refitting, cost effectively, a body back onto one of the original chassis. I had sourced a dump truck body from an MOD Foden Alpha that would fit nicely on the 4000 chassis. We use this around the yard alongside our 1960’s Foden dumper.

It was whilst looking at the chassis cabs with Stuart in Geesons at Ripley that we saw OYE779Y, parked up with a plough fitted, it was minus 11 during this period and almost every motor in the yard had flat batteries, which the frost had then killed completely. We didn’t get to see a motor running but I ended up buying two including OYE. As soon as I saw this motor I knew that there was something strange about it. A Paccar (Kenworth) chassis, Cummins L10 250, Eaton Twinsplitter and Rockwell axles, with a 4000 series cab. As a regular buyer and driver of Fodens in the 80’s and 90’s I knew that these components weren’t available in 1982, when it was allegedly built. I had a new Foden the same month as this motor was supposed to have been built, December 1982. BYG167Y had Foden chassis and S10 cab, the Twinsplitter hadn’t been invented at this point. The serial number stamped on the chassis relates to an S80 series gritter, one of the previous generation, with Foden Gearbox, chassis, axles and Rolls Royce 265L engine. This is what the Foden Microfiche build sheet still shows for this serial number.

OYE779Y seems to have been built to replace the original, which was written off in a serious accident. The strange thing is the allocation of the same serial and registration numbers to a totally different vehicle. We have seen a black and white photograph of the wagon, when new with a conventional Atkinson gritter body. This was replaced with the French body now fitted. This has water tanks and can spread the salt with water, made of plastic and stainless steel, it appears unused. The wagon itself was unloved and un driven, we think, because of the Twin splitter gearbox, which wasn’t suitable for the drivers employed on the motorway gritting teams. With 30,000 km on the clock, mostly service miles, the wagon is like new. Other than sag in the roof lining material the cab interior is like new. I’m guessing that it saw very little actual work, subsequently it doesn’t have the fantastic paint job of the newer 4000 series, the result of being sandblasted and two pack painted. OYE has been touched up, a bit of a splodge here and there. There is a total lack of corrosion, it just needs a good respray and it would be like new. A new set of tyres fitted in 2003 still have the stickers on them. The long and the short of it is that this is a much newer wagon. The 4000 series cab was available in 1987, I bought one on an E plate, the last generation of S10 was still available in 1986 on a D plate so I reckon it would be built around this time.

There are only a few 4000 series gritters survived in the UK but some went to Ireland and others to Eastern Europe. Presumably Roger Geeson was allowed to export to countries where it wouldn't affect the sales of the suppliers of the new gritting fleet - this appeared to be why there was a restriction on sales in the UK.

I couldn’t resist adding my other two Fodens to the line-up, customers were coming and going at the same time hence some other motors in there. I decided to add some cab interior shots a day or two later, just for the record as it were.

This is a photograph from the start second annual running of the Renault Mullingar Half Marathon which was held on Friday 17th March 2017 St. Patrick's Day Lá Fhéile Pádraig 2017 in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland at 10:30. Following on from the incredible success of the first two years of the race this year the total numbers participating rose from just under 600 in 2015, 900 in 2016 to over 1200 in this year 2017. As was the case last year the nominated charity was Childline. The roots of the successs of the event last year was the perfect running weather, excellent organisation and a very flat and fast route. All of these characteristics were repeated this year.

Last year's weather was not repeated. Indeed the race could be described as a race of two halves in terms of weather. The first half participants had the strong, fresh westerly wind on their backs. However, turning for home along the Royal Canal this became a very strong headwind for 3 - 4 miles. Participants travelled from all over Ireland with a very large participation from runners around Mullingar and the midlands. The race has an AAI permit. The race's early start time was to facilitate the annual St. Patrick's Day parade which brings a large number of local visitors to the town on an annual basis. Parking is free in Mullingar town for the entire day. A small change to the course configuration seen the race cross the M4 Motorway at The Downs via a winding pedestrian footbridge.

The race began on Pearse Street/Austin Friar's Street in the town and proceeds North East out of the town to the N52 Delvin/Dundalk road towards Lough Sheever. The course then follows beautiful rural country roads out to The Downs at the M4. The only significant hill or rise on the course occurs here at about 7 miles when runners cross a pedestrian footbridge over the M4 near Junction 14 Thomas Flynn and Sons The Downs. The race then joins the now local access route of the old N4 road and then joins the Royal Canal at Great Down. The remainder of the race follows the Royal Canal back westward to Mullingar town. The towpath on the Canal is perfectly flat and in excellent condition. Runners will notice how the level of the canal changes dramatically along the route - at points the canal is level with the towpath. In other places the canal is at least 3 meters lower than the canal path. However the path is perfectly flat and firm the whole way. The course then leaves the Royal Canal at the Ardmore Road/Millmount area of the town and finishes in the Mullingar Town Park on Austin Friar's Street beside the Annebrook Hotel which is the Race Headquarters. The park provides a very nice setting for the finish of the race and runners and their families can mix and congregate around the finish area and the hotel.

A huge catch headed by a new for County!

Well I thought Tuesday night was good for moth numbers...the next night on Wednesday blew that one out of the water completely! With no less than 44 species recorded and 16 new for the year species and one new for me and the garden.

The weather was warm again and up to 26 degrees in the daytime and not dropping below 16 degrees here in North Herts despite another clear night.

Something special that caught my eye was sitting on the top egg tray underneath the collar of the trap. It was a Pammene and I instantly said to myself 'flipping ell that's trauniana' having recently seen someone else catch one on social media. The moth was whisked over to Graeme for a second opinion and dissection just to be sure, it is indeed Pammene trauniana and new to the County of Hertfordshire!

Two rare Pammene's in just over a week (after last Tuesday's Pammene ignorata) is incredible and i'll be happy with this being my best moth of 2017 for the garden.

We do have a few small Field Maple trees about 400 metres from our house of which this moth feeds upon.

Other bits of interest were a great big fat female Pale Tussock, the first time i've recorded a female in my garden trap and uncommon species for my garden such as Scorched Wing and

Teleiodes luculella.

MEPs discussed on 20 May European Commission plans to tackle the large numbers of migrants seeking to reach the European Union, often risking their lives at sea. Commission vice president Frans Timmermans and migration commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos announced a number of measures, including an emergency mechanism for relocating migrants, a resettlement scheme to take in migrants from countries outside the EU and more funds for securing borders.
