Well OK not quite to nowhere but only to the Cape Palliser Lighthouse, the road stops shortly after.

Latitude 41° 36.8’ south Longitude 175° 17.4 East

The light shone for the first time on 27th October 1897. The lighthouse is notable for the 261 steps it takes to reach it. When these steps were first built they were greeted enthusiastically as they replaced a slippery narrow path up the rock face that was especially dangerous at night.

The cast iron tower stands 18 metres high and 78 metres above sea level. The light flashes twice every 20 seconds and can be seen for 26 nautical miles (48 kilometres).

The 1000-watt lamp operates on mains electricity with a diesel generator for standby power. The light originally burnt oil as a light source and was converted to diesel generated electricity in 1954, and then to mains electricity in 1967.

The light was fully automated in 1986 and the lighthouse keeper was withdrawn.

The operation of the light is now completely automatic and is monitored by a computer and Maritime NZ staff in Wellington.

This weeks theme is "nightmare". Done for macromonday and sundayslider groups

I know nothing of tides

And i'm confused by the stars

But you can never get lost

When you've nowhere to go

THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT AND FAVES

ON THE REACTIONS I WILL TRY TO RESPOND BACK

This image was made from six single exposures and shows an old steel rail bridge.

Imagine riding a train in a the beautiful Swiss Alps after nightfall. You look out of the window and enjoy the starry skies. Mars and Andromeda are shining in the sky and the Winter Milky Way is leading the way to a brightly illuminated stone bridge that boldly curves over a narrow valley.

Suddenly hold your breath, as you just realized that the bridge leads to nowhere and the tracks end in the middle of a vertical cliff. What a nightmare! You tremble with shock while the train races towards the bridge and crosses over it without even trying to brake. Then everything turns black - because you entered the tunnel at the end of the bridge.

Crazy story? Sure. Welcome to the Landwasserviadukt.

where oh where did Ariadne drop her thread ...?

Photographed on Amsterdam Avenue. Enhanced with NIK software and Photoshop.

Diggin’ from my old photos….=)

This was the time when we only have XT as primary cam and back up was our old manual slr(Nikon FM10) and p&s (Panasonic z15) … Hubby was taking pix on the other side .... so I end up with two choices…=) Film or p&s.

This is a product of canon manual slr and point&shoot Panasonic. I developed the bridge personally …via traditional darkroom (meaning shake it baby and work blind ) then incorporated my dramatic clouds taken from my p&s via photoshop. Taken the same day @ the same place … Hope youll like it.

Being in "The Middle of Nowhere" applies very well to one bold enough to shoot along the former C&O's Mountain Sub as it drops through the Pads Creek Valley from Millboro to Griffith, Va. Over the last few years, this area has been of great interest to me, and on this December day I decided to shoot the Westbound Cardinal at the 1946-bypassed Mason's Tunnel a couple miles west of Millboro.

Embarking on a new discovery for me, Infrared photography. I’ve embraced it during the last few days in Derbyshire while looking after two of my grandchildren in Chapel en le Frith. The appeal was obvious as I love black white photography and it’s ideally suited for my dog walks in summer. Maybe the Peak District was not the right place to start this journey, the place is beautiful and I couldn’t help snapping photos wherever, whenever. Getting these photos back in LR OMG, underwhelmed was not the word. Then I came to this photo and the Lyric’s to a Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam to the Young’uns) song came into mind… “Miles from nowhere, Guess I'll take my time Oh yeah, to reach there. Look up at the mountain, mmm I have to climb, Oh yeah, to reach there”. I guess they sum up where IR photography is forme. Do you think I'll reach there?.

Are we still having fun?

Winter 2012 - London - England - UK

(Cat Stevens, paraphrased)

Miles from nowhere

Guess I'll take my time

Oh yeah, to reach there

Look up at the mountains, mmm

I've had to climb

Oh yeah, to reach there

Lord, my body has been a good friend

But I won't need it when I reach the end

Miles from nowhere

Not a soul in sight

Oh yeah, but it's alright

I have my freedom

I can make my own rules

Oh yes, the ones that I choose

Lord, my body has been a good friend

But I won't need it when I reach the end

Miles from nowhere

Guess I'll take my time

Oh yeah, to reach there

(Update on doggie neighbor Maggie: we saw her yesterday morning, so she's still hanging in there. John corrected us on her age, she's not sixteen...she's seventeen!)

At low tide, the bridge at Belhaven provides access over the estuary to a beach.

At high tide, when the water level rises, access to the bridge is under water and it looks like a bridge to nowhere until the tide retreats again
