Niagra Falls.
The Niagra Gorge extends 7 miles (11km) downstream from the falls. The canadian horseshoe falls plunge 52m (170 feet) into the Maid of the Mist Pool. The american falls descend 34m (110 feet) to the rock pile at the base of the falls. The Niagra river is very young being only 12000 years old. The falls are the second largest in the world after Victoria Falls in southern Africa. The falls have moved back 7 miles over 12,000 years, making it one of the fastest moving waterfall in the world.
Each minute, 168,000 cubic metres (6 million cubic feet) of water pass over the crestline.
The majority of the river flow is removed upstream and shared between both canada and america for hydro electric generation for a total generating capacity of 4.4 million kilowatts (5 million horsepower).
Historically the first humans arrived in the niagra region almost 12,000 years ago, just in time to witness the birth of the falls (far downstream from where it currently flows, or falls, today). In may 1535 Jacques Cartier left France to explore the new world and open a chain of high priced jewelery stores with fiesty security guards at the door. Although he never saw the falls, the indians he met along the st lawrence river told him about the mighty cataract, stories too that reached Samuel de Champlain visiting canada in 1608. A jesuit father Gabriel Lalemant first recorded the Iroquios indian name for the river - Onguiaahra, meaning the Strait. Niagra is a simplification of the original.
One fifth of all the fresh water in the world lies in the four upper great lakes, michigan, huron, superior and erie. All the outflow empties in the niagra river and eventually cascades over the falls.
March 29th 1848 due to an ice jam the upper river stopped flowing for several hours. The flow was stopped to a point where peope actually walked out and recovered artifacts from the riverbed.
The falls were very different less than 100 years ago. Today 3/4 of the river flow is diverted both for hydro generation and to slow the erosion of the falls. Eventually the falls will recede far enough to drain most of Lake Erie, the bottom of which is higher than the bottom of the falls. 90% of the river goes over the Horseshoe falls and at night the flow is cut by half for further hydro generation. This drastically reduced the two to ten feet of annual erosion that was occuring, with the falls receding southward at that rate.
The recent construction of tall buildings (mostly hotels) on the canadian side has caused the airflow over the falls to change direction. The result is that the viewing areas on the canadian side are now often obscured by a layer of mist from breezes rolling over the buildings and flowing down into the gorge below the falls feeding into a whirlpool of moisture and air.

This is one of the COOLEST songs I've played. We normally save "big" songs for the end of the year concert in which we are combined with band students. This was considered one of those "big" songs, and it was FABULOUS!

Someone gave me a vintage cookbook (for Crisco!) and this note was tucked inside. I thought it was charming.

Walking down the street with my friend on the way to the Jazz Showcase we heard this beautiful singing...
This woman was just standing on the corner with two of her friends and really belting out some beautiful vocals...
She sounded amazing.
I got to her just as she'd finished singing and the people at an outdoor cafe were giving her an enthusiastic round of applause...
For a moment the street was alive with the sound of music...
This was that moment.
A 'SHOUT OUT' to my wonderful friend Anna Gay... one of the best photographers I know and an amazing person as well... she's gotta be the biggest sweetheart on flickr... Anna was just interviewed on a killer photography website... www.rocktheshotforum.com/
You should check it out... this girl is really going places!

Note that the 41 Sqn logo over a map of NZ emblem applied to the tail and ROYAL NEW ZEALAND AIR FORCE has been applied to the nose. The last Freighters in service (NZ5909, 10, 11, 12 & possibly NZ5903) were the only Freighters to wear this insignia and it was only worn for the last year of their service life.

Note: Just so there is no confusion. The vast majority of animals, and birds that I photograph, are taken in the wild. This particular photo, however, was taken in a zoo.
