Male and female Eastern Band-winged Meadowhawks (Sympetrum semicinctum semicinctum) - Penny Lake Preserve, Boothbay Harbor, Maine

These guys were 8 - 15 feet off the ground sitting on a spruce tree with a 9 - 12 foot camera to subject distances for these captures.

Earlier in the day, I walked the open trails at Penny Lake, saw a lot of meadowhawks, but no Band-wings. So, it seems they like being up high, and I have yet to see a Band-wing less than 8 feet off the ground.

So, yet again I had to resort to one of my telephoto macro strategies. This time the rig was a 300 mm F4, with a 2xTC on a 5DsR full frame body. The advantage of going with the 300 + 2xTC rig is that the 300 has a macro mode that can focus down to a 5 foot MFD¹, whereas the 600 prime's MFD is more like 20 feet.

Sometimes, I get a student who has decided not to speak. It's understandable. If you are suddenly plunged into another culture with a language you don't understand, one of the few rebellions open to you is to elect not to speak. it gives you one small bit of power, where otherwise, you are powerless.

C doesn't speak, apart from one-word answers that take a while before she gets the nerve to whisper them. I'm working on her confidence in speaking, but in the meantime, we have the most marvelous written conversations. We talk about food, TV, movies, and people, all with her careful illustrations and our giggles and nods back and forth. The notes we pass are some of my most enjoyable student interactions.

Probably a lot of people think I should be pushing her to speak more. I'm more concerned with earning her trust, so that when she does decide that she is comfortable with conversing verbally, she knows she can trust me to listen to her.

Madeira Poached Pear (2 types: Barrlet and Bosc pears) with Dolce Du Leche

I first had it at Adega Restaurant. i was very impressed with it and I tried it at home and my guests were very happy.

For Madeira Poached Pears you will need:

NOTE: I do the pear the day before, optional, but I like to give the pears more time to soak in the poaching syrup and chilled. If you have time, sprinkle some toasted almonds or pecan on top of the ice cream.

The Pears

6 Barlett pearrs ~~~ they should be quite firm, not over~ripe or they will dissolve when poached.

Pour ice cold water & squeeze 1/2-3/4 of lemon juice in a non~reactive mixing bowl (glass, ceramic, stainless)

Peel the pears. Place the prepared pear into the cold lemon water, which will prevent them from discolouring. Let them sit in the lemon water while preparing the poaching solution

The Poaching Solution

3 cups of Madeira wine (Casa dos Vinhos - 5 years old, a lower priced madeira, good for cooking)

2 Tbs lemon juice

3/4 cup granulated sugar/maple syrup (do not use confectioners sugar) - I used 1/4 maple syrup and 1/2 cup of granulated sweetener for baking.

I wrapped mulling spices from william soloman in cheeseclothes like a teabag -- cinnamon chips, orange rind, whole allspice, wholes cloves, cinnamon oil, orange oil -- or simple 1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder should work as well

a few drops of natural vanilla and/or caramel extract if you like (optional)

To a non~reactive saucepan (enamel, stainless, etc), add the wine, lemon juice, sugar and mulling spice/cinnamon. Stir over medium heat until all are incorporated and then cover and bring to a low boil. Now add the pear (make sure the solution covers at least one side of the pear).

Allow the pear to simmer for about 15-30 minutes, turning with a slotted spoon. The pears will become soft and fragile, be a little careful. After about 15-30 minutes, remove from heat and allow the saucepan of pears to cool, covered. This resting time is actually important. The timing depends on how soft you like the pear to be and the size of the pear. You can serve now or chill the pear in the solution in the fridge overnight for next day use. Some people don't like the pear chill, then serve on the same day.

While the pear are draining, boil down the Madeira syrup to reduce it's volume to about 1/2 or less.

NOW..., everything can be set aside for later. Spoon a puddle of the Madeira syrup. Drip 1 Tsp of the syrup onto the cream (mascrophone or ice cream or whipped cream).

How to walk down a kite using a karabiner and sling

This is an IQ Light stencil made with tabs that should spiral smoothly down to a point. This is based on the stencil by Lennart Poettering, but modified to give spiral joints. To do this I shaped the tabs according to this picture, which is what I got from "whirling" five radial lines in The Gimp.

Note: If you want the panels to bend less, shrink this image vertically a little bit.

Two of the three wicked administrators seen in previous pictures in this set of Bible Cartoons.

The lions (Panthera leo).

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Originally I was going to draw this scene viewed from above ground, and have some guards throwing the administrators into the lions’ den. Since I have already shown that view in previous pictures (Scene no’s 9, 11 and 13) I thought it might be more interesting to draw the scene from inside the lions’ den. We also get to see those great shaggy lions once more as well!

Made an alp crossing to Rome in Sept. 1926 in 14h with four fuelstops with hills up to an altitude 4.500 m. (free translation from wikipedia.de).

Last preserved original shown in the German Museum in Munich, this one is a replica for the Flying Messerschmitt Museum in Manching. I will post some more pics of this first "light sport aircraft" shortly.
